@@jaredfullmer5104 Jordan shot over 50% while being guarded by Payton in this series. Being more specific, he shot 11/21 against GP(2/2 in game 1, 0/0 in game 2, 1/4 in game 3, 2/6 in game 4, 4/6 in game 5 and 2/3 in game 6). Jordan's poor shooting in games 4 and 6 were the result of great team defense and not just Payton. As good of a job Payton did in game 4 against Jordan, MJ only attempted 6 shots against him and missed 4 of them. Jordan outplayed Payton in the first 3 games, leading the Bulls to a 3-0 lead, the series was over at that point. Even though Jordan shot badly in game 6(most misses came against Hawkins by the way), he still contributed in many other ways and he was not outplayed by Payton that game. Jordan's playmaking, rebounding and defense that game was key.

Growing up watching Jordan and the Bulls winning in 97 n 98 were, and still are the best basketball performances I've seen in my life, I was like 6 n 7 years old. My family rooted for Jordan, the whole neighborhood rooted for The Chicago Bulls. When the Finals were over we all went down to the corner with pans and spoons making noise, celebrating the championship like if they represented Puerto Rico or something. I guess that's how much we loved him, just basketball lovers, Bulls fans since being kids because of Jordan. I'm glad I got the chance to see this with my two eyes. Back in those days I know there were many great players but in that specific moment it was all about MJ, Pippen, Rodman, Kerr, Kukoc.. They were the squad. Still a Bulls fan even though they haven't been to the Finals since 98' but I'm glad the Spurs did made a legacy of their own. 72-10.. Best regular season team record, not just in the NBA but in every major sport. Chicago Bulls 1995-1996.

Granted you've seen some unbelievable games where a guy goes for 46 points on 16-22 10-10 free throws almost 80% from the field. Devin Booker, this year's playoffs put up some silly a%# numbers vs the Nuggets while KD simply "chips in" 28 points on like 15 shots maximum.

But the guys today don’t have to deal with anywhere near the defensive pressure MJ had to deal with to still shoot 50%. Context to the numbers reveal a different picture than you are painting. Imagine MJ, Bird, Dominique, Kareem, Magic playing with todays spacing and weak defense? Come on now. Todays numbers are inflated by design. Silver wants superstars everywhere so he killed the defensive tools to allow artificial goats and superstars. One day, when the spell is over” the masses will see the truth. Games like these expose the lies from Shannon, Wright, Cowherd, Riddick(the plumber), Rich Paul and all the other Klutch media shills. B-ball is a business and to promote the brand Silver and the league are ok with tearing down the past to promote Tahoe present “exhibition style” league. What you just watched was real b-ball. You comments make it like the Bulls just rolled Seattle up with ease. That was NOT the case.
@brucejohnson3989 жыл бұрын
Rick Steck Yes Jordan's defense was good on Payton, although this was his worst finals (I think Rodman should have been MVP but that's a different bias conversation). But to make a deal in the description about Payton's 2 turnovers... I'd take a starting point guard with only 2 turnover any day of the week.

Bruce Johnson Lol, you don't seem to understand that MJ could perform at an MVP level, play all 82 regular season games, lead the league in scoring, play solid defense, LEAD his team to 72 wins and yet still play at the top level while managing his injuries. He did that 2 more times after this and in his 30s. Once they got up 3-0, they got sloppy in this series. It was anti-climatic. The Bulls were already looking forward to the parade and champagne. MJ never really forced anything in this season as the team was running so smoothly. So he never tried to make it a individual thing as much. Sonics were desperate and scrappy. Kind of what happened with Phoenix in 93. Except the Bulls didn't need MJ to take over or force it as that 93 team was more tired and depleted. The Bulls were known to try to turn it on and off and Phil Jackson was highly critical of it. Payton sure did disrupt MJ as he was very physical with him (would be fouls today). But that also means prior to this, Payton played above what his body could handle to help lead a 60+ win season, and into the Finals Sure Payton took it to MJ hard. He had the physical strength and mindset to. However, if Payton played MJ all games, he would have re-injured much sooner.

The highlights of Payton shutting down mj in game 4 and 6 are way better. That was some top notch defense

Gary Payton vs The Eastern Conference All-Stars... I mean the Bulls. 1 question. Would we consider MJ as The Goat if he doesnt get Scottie? Mind you before Scottie elevated HIS game, the Bulls struggled to win 40+ games a season with all of MJ's scoring and defensive titles.

Pippen had an average year on offense shooting 47% from the field but I dont recall him ever having a mediocre year on defense. My point is, Pippen arrives, Bad Boys disband, Bird is old, now MJ wins. People always forget that Pippen was a defensive monster from day 1. Thats what made the Buls become unbeatable.

@OIP ! You taking these Sonics over Paul Pierce, KG, and Ray? Lol. Typical Jordan blind fan.

As a Bulls fan, that is all 🧢. Jordan had to get sent to the line a thousand times in that series. I remember it like it was yesterday. Rodman and Kukoc was the real reason for the Bulls winning the series.

Jordan didn't shut Peyton down Peyton teammates just couldn't hit shots
@NobodyTouchesJordan9 жыл бұрын
Well part of the reason his teammates couldn't get good shots or started rushing shots was because of Jordan's defense on Payton and the Bulls pressure messing up the Sonics offense. Pippen did the same thing when he shut down Mark Jackson in Game 1 of the 1998 ECF. Pippen messed up the Pacers offense, and they didn't get off many good shots because of his pressure on Jackson.

Nobody Touches Jordan i'm a fan of Michael Jordan and also a dickrider. his defense is good but not the greatest defensive SG player of all-time i think it's kobe bryant, if you look at his defense he seems to have a slow lateral movement, look at 6:56 of the video you can see that he got blown by payton, i'm not underestimating jordan defense but he always getting faked easily look at 1:40 of the video.. and he's always leaving his opponent to help the other defender but it's bad if you're guarding players like Stephen Curry etc. I don't think he can guard elite players now, if he play in this era at his post-prime.. kobe can do it better i think..

Jordan played against Kobe's competition and at age 38 shut down prime Vince Carter to 0 pts in the 2nd half on Dec 16, 2001 - their first regular season meeting Google - "Jordan, Wizards shut down Carter" He also held Paul Pierce to 14 points on 6/16 (38%) shooting in their first meeting KZbin - "Jordan (Age 38) Defense on Paul Pierce Unfortunately I only found part of that game and not the whole thing and he had huge team defensive impact in 01/02 Before his injury, the Wizards allowed 92.2 ppg through 47 games which would be tied for 6th best in the league with the Pistons Wizards were 2nd worst in ppg allowed the previous year KZbin - "Michael Jordan Wizards Knee Injury" After injury, the Wizards allowed 96.8 ppg through the remaining 35 games which would be ranked 19th in the league Remember, this is in 01/02 - the Kobe/Shaq's last 3peat season prime Jordan would easily crush today's perimeter competition

Ronald Padilla Jordan is ten times the defender Kobe will ever be. And that´s despite Kobe being pretty good.

You think its kobe? Lol. Man you guys are funny! MJ is the only SG to win scoring title and defensive player of the year in the same season , in the history of the game. Not to mention he's led the league in steals several times. Kobe has never done that lol
@skywalk3x9 жыл бұрын
Orlando Lewis im glad you told him lol. He's looking at one clip and decides Kobe is better. How many SG's do you see block centers? Jordan made it a habit to block centers shots

Michael Delgado Sorry man, I'm a Seattle Sonics fan for life and GP is my favorite player of all time, but you must have forgotten that Payton had a calf injury the whole series. Hersey Hawkins guarded Jordan for the first 3 games (due to Payton's injury), until they finally put Payton on him. At that point we were able to contain Jordan to his career playoff low in points (average), but it just wasn't enough. That '96 Bulls team is the greatest ever.

Jose Santiago I remember. My comment was made in spite because of the title of the video...lol
@Deangeles2289 жыл бұрын
Jose Santiago Gotta admit that this is truth. Payton wasn't at 100% but it would've still been a tall task to beat those Bulls. It was a defensive battle on both sides.

When did Payton get shut down in this video? First off he could score but he wasn't an offensive juggernaut. What I see is when GP drives they send a big man to help every time. Stop this MJ was a great defender nonsense.

Ced Mc what great players did he stop 1 on 1? I'll wait. Rick lead him into the traps? What does that even mean? That's apart of the game plan. You know like going into the game.

Rick so analyst know everything? Pippen was the real defender. He didn't need help or "lead" his man into traps.
