This is DESPITE Kobe "taking it to the basket" a lot more than Bird did for higher-percentage shots like dunks and layups. Kobe had 6 seasons as the highest misses in the league, and 3 runner up years - BIrd was never in that competition (never placed in the Top 20 for misses in a season). The only person that was even close on league-leading miss seasons was Wilt - but while Wilt led the league in misses 4 seasons in a row, he also led the league in SCORING all 4 of those seasons AND LED THE LEAGUE IN FG% 3 of those 4 seasons (he was #3 in FG% the season he scored 50.4 per game) - so no REAL competition there (to be fair, Kobe did lead the league 2 times on PPG, both included in his league-leading MISS seasons). Kobe was 18'th in FG% in his BEST accuracy season, very early in his career - and never cracked the Top 20 any other season, despite the AVERAGE NBA shooter averaging 3-5% worse from 2 point range in HIS era vs Bird's era. By Bird era standards, Kobe was a WAY below average shooter, Bird was an above average shooter.

There's not one guy right now who could physically hold up to that style for as long as most of the greats from that time did. Even the screens being set then as compared to now are totally different. The NBA has been a joke for almost 20 years at this point because they have taken out the grind of what it takes to make it through a whole season. That used to be a skill you needed to have, to be physically tough enough to make it through. @@sludge4125 Scoring 9 points in the final OT to defeat prime Jordan and the eventual NBA Champions is truly world class. At this point Bird was moving like a 50-year old because of his wrecked back, yet still scored 34 points on 42% shooting against the 2 best defenders of that era. In that way Magic probably has the edge but if you're trying to choose the best player at their peak there is a very strong argument that Bird is the word. Look at the advance analytics. Bird led the league 4 times in VORP. Magic? Once. Box plus minus? Bird again led the league 4 times. Magic? Zero. Win shares? Bird twice. Magic? Zero. PER? Bird twice. Magic? Zero. Bird had multiple seasons where he led the league in almost every advanced analytic simultaneously. Magic hardly every led the league in even a single advanced analytic stat. Bird was NOT prejudice... EVERYBODY got it...
@ronking51032 жыл бұрын
Grant wasn't a great defender. He was an understized 4/5 that had a knack for rebounding and was solid on offense. He played in an era dominated by D-First bigs: Hakeem, Robinson, Mutombo, Ewing. Even offensive bigs like Karl Malone, Barkley, Garnett would get nods as being better defensive bigs. Horace might have been league average but in an era dominated by elite defenders at those positions he's forgettable.

Bird was a monster. Top 5 of all time. You can have LeBron at SF, I would take a prime bird all day. Scoring machine, rebound machine, and a great passer. Just wish his body held up. Should have at least 5 championships but had to face two other potential GOATs in Kareem and Magic.

I was at that game and I was probably the only person in Boston Garden pulling for the Bulls that day. I grew up in Wilmington, NC but was living in MA at the time. One of my co-workers had season tickets, but he couldn't go because it was Easter Sunday and he had to spend the day with his family. I bought his two tickets. I wish I still had the ticket stubs. My ex-wife probably took them too.

@allen iverson They exaggerate the players heights by a few inches. And yes Bird was playing with an extremely messed up back. Jordan missed two threes in a row, Bird would not have done that given the chance. If Bird was healthy, this would not have gone to even one overtime.

@allen iverson magic 6'8 is right. He was always listed 6'8 in college. When they came into the NBA & the rivalry accelerated, he would say he was 6'9. I believe to make the Bird comparison even more so.

I felt like Jordan nailed that shot and the fact that he hit that is beyond me... simply the greatest of all time! Birds performance is nothing to dismiss as he always played crazy good against the bulls because he has heart and I think he was the only player that never backed down to Jordan no matter how much he came at him.

@Jay Yoyo when Jordan came back to play for the wizards, he was the first 40 year old to ever score over 40 points in a NBA game. I don’t like the comparisons between Bird and Jordan, they pretty much played in different eras but Jordan is undoubtedly the GOAT.
