When these youngbloods born since Bron was drafted tryna tell me he’s the GOAT not Jordan it’s ridiculous, they just don’t get it. MJ was the mentally strongest player ever with only Bill Russell about the same but less talented. Bron is mentally weak as elite competitors go. He’s a good person to his loved ones and that’s not nothing, but he doesn’t have the killer mentality. He just doesn’t. It’s not the worst thing in life, because MJ and others sort of like him have called it a curse, and it’s pretty clear to anyone with a reasonable understanding of psychology why it’d be a double-edged sword. The gambling addiction is a manifestation of it, same with the nicotine/cigar use. But anyone who knows the game knows that disrespecting (intentionally or otherwise) and thereby infuriating MJ (excluding of the Wizard years, and to some varying degree his late season comeback in ‘95 when he was still in baseball shape and so varied widely/wildly) would be demolished, it was like a law of nature. It was a little bit scary, MJ always had more in the tank waiting for the right provocation to emerge. It’s why almost no one who saw both think LeBron is the GOAT unless they’re paid by Klutch to sports, trying to troll for clicks/views/attention, or still butthurt about MJ embarrassing them.

That is crazy. And 10 triple dubs in 11 games...MJ could do whatever he put his mind to and not just do it but excel at it. Even if you call him the GOAT, he's still underrated.

That fact that you had make a scoring move immediately after receiving the pass is unnoted now adays... These notions that MJ wasn't a passer and couldn't pass is bull. Just his hands size alone he would manipulate the ball of fake out defenders and drop dimes. Like leading a receiver he would pass the ball on the move precision and anticipation. His job was to score and him having the ball in his hands all the time would take away from his main asset scoring and it's not like he had a good to great scores to ride with him. Jordan was originally an all-around player who learned how to play on a team play at UNC. By changing his playing style to allow Pippen and the rest of his teammates to develop, and even embracing a triangle offense that reduced his role, Jordan was able to win championships with his teammates. (Of course in the playoffs, the triangle didn't work so well, Bulls leaned more heavily on the Jordan GO strategy). BTW The Bulls lost all 6 games against the Cavs in 88-89 season matchup. However, they would go on to win 3-2 in the playoffs, an upset that is considered one of the greatest upset victories in NBA history. Jordan averaged 39.8 P - 5.8 R - 8.2 A - 3.0 S in the series on 51% shooting from the field. Chicago won game 5 on buzzer-beater made by Jordan which is called 'The Shot'.) Phil Jackson also said in an interview that "when Pippen's rebounds and assists exceed Jordan's numbers, that's when we're going to win a championship," and that's exactly what happened.

I was too young to really remember this stint at point guard specifically, I think that also means that people were not really making a huge deal about it because I was certainly watching basketball and the Bulls at that time. I did find a newspaper article from the Chicago Tribune discussing Jordan's time at point guard from April 3, 1989 posted below. Seems like Jordan felt it was easier on his body to play point than to do a lot of scoring. As it would turn out, Phil Jackson was hired as head coach of the Bulls just 3 months after this article, and that was after the Bulls went to the ECF and were the only team to beat the Pistons in any playoff games that year losing 2-4. Pistons swept everyone else. ----------------------- Michael Jordan`s switch to point guard, labeled a temporary arrangement earlier, looks more and more like a permanent career move with every one of the Bulls` victories. Jordan and his bosses would have to make the decision by season`s end, because having Jordan as a point guard would affect the Bulls` plans for the draft in June. ”Let`s see how the rest of the year goes,” Jordan said. ”If we go further in the playoffs (than last year) and do well, and my success continues and I feel much more rested at the end of the season, then I would look at it.” But Jordan is becoming convinced that the playmaker role could extend his career. ”I`m not getting as banged up as I used to,” he said. And, if made permanent, the move could also improve the careers of many of the Bulls. ”How many easy baskets do you see Horace Grant and Scottie Pippen get every day now?” said coach Doug Collins. ”That`s all created by the greatness of Michael Jordan with the ball. Opponents don`t know where the ball is coming from now.” Why didn`t they make the move earlier? ”Nobody knew this would happen,” said Jordan. ”If we would have known this years back, we would have done it.” - With Jordan`s switch to point guard, he believes he has put the days of record high-scoring games behind him. ”I think those 63-point games are gone,” Jordan said. ”I`ve had a good time scoring 60-some points and 50-some points. But it`s a lot of work, a lot of work.” - Craig Hodges, still nursing a sprained left ankle, dressed but did not play Sunday. ”I came thinking I was going to give it a try and shot around, but it never loosened up,” Hodges said. ”There is still a lot of pain.” John Paxson started in Hodges` place and had 8 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds. Hodges is listed as doubtful for Tuesday`s game against Charlotte. - Bill Cartwright was his own critic after Sunday`s game. He summed up his 4-point, 3-rebound performance in three ways: ”Lousy. Tough luck. The ball wouldn`t go in.”

Love this video. I've always said if you line up MJ and LeBron's top 25 passes, MJ has at least 15 of them. The best passers in the game can "throw guys open" or "see passes before they are actually there", and MJ had that gene. He wasn't on Bird and Magic level, but he was really good. LeBron has never been on that level. He typically has to have a guy be open and then he can deliver a flashy pass. He has to see passes with his eyes, he can't just sense when the pass will be there.

These kind of stat lines were much harder to achieve back then.. Yet this has only been dug back up in recent years.. NOT something people spent 30 years saying "he averaged triple doubles as a PG". TELLS YOU A LOT about the state of NBA media today. He draws so much defense he made assists look easy. Theres 3 reasons Lebron averages more assist. 1.They are recorded different to back then. 2. It wasn't his job. 3.I've watched Jordan draw defense and get an open guy...only to watch 'open guy 'brick Thousands of times. He passed from the start, but takes over when no one else is a ring...which was A LOT in early days. His first year in college was setting up Worthy all the time. His low assists are a testament to how bad his team were at scoring without him. The whole reason it was Jordans job to score was caus Bulls built team around defense and hustle. With the occasional 3pt assassin (who needs to be open). If Scottie was as reliable at scoring.. Jordan would easily average another assist or 2.. If he had teams like Magic or Lebron had.. Would easily have a career average over 8 or 9... Recorded how they are today .. 10 or 11. Jordan was a great passer and if he played PG in TODAYS league, those stat lines be even more ridiculous.

Yes. The media was all over MJ playjng the point. You can see youtube videos of cbs game intro and they will mention it in the introduction because he was stringing together so many triple doubles and the Bulls were winning.... MJ did not want to play point because he had to chase those little guards like Mugsy Bogues and Michael Adams, Kevin Johnson and the such. Mike didn’t want to chase Rod Strickland. He wanted to guard thenbig guards and forwards.

In the 80s, an assist was a pass that led directly to a basket... Today, I have seen Lebron make a pass to half court and the player take a couple of dribbles and hit a shot and Lebron gets an assist. Can you imagine if Magic Johnson got an assist for every pass he made to Kareem and James Worthy?? 😂
@Ramgime4 ай бұрын
Jordan also played in an era where there was no 3 in the key defensive violations. This mean if I am a 7'0"+ Center I can just camp in the paint and never leave. You have to drive and dunk or layup on me if you want a basket. There was no rule that the center had to leave the paint after 3 seconds. I also think that diminished the role of the center on defense because now the center has to be more mobile and can't focus on blocking shots and posting up, which is really a 7 footer's strength. That's how guys like Olajuwon had 10+ blocks in a game. You won't see that anymore. People can argue all they want. The league is way more soft now.
@TheRealMindCrime4 ай бұрын
Absolutely. The day i started seeing centers shooting 3s is the day i knew basketball was in trouble. Big guy belongs down low. Now they have to guard all the way to the wing leaving the lane wide open. Dunks aren't impressive anymore cuz they're wide open dunks.

Point god drained a lot of stamina : bringing the ball under pressure, carriying the ball and running the offense, creating the shot if nothing's open. Particullary with the 80-90's packed playstyle. MJ was able to do it in a small serie of games, but It would have been too much for him when aging, and perhaps too much in the whole season. The triangle offense was set to involve the others, and save MJ's stamina by freeing him from doing all the job and allowing him easier shots.
@TheRealMindCrime4 ай бұрын
agreed. The triangle was exactly what they needed so MJ didn't have to do everything anymore. He could save some energy playing off ball and focus more on scoring with less effort instead of having to iso blow bye everyone all the time
@florianpoulin71084 ай бұрын
@@TheRealMindCrime I Think they could also have played UCLA offense. It has some common entries (Wing entry), patterns(low post, pinch post, blind pig), and positionless logic with the triangle.

@@florianpoulin7108 There’s an interview during that time where MJ talks about how playing the PG position was much easier on his body and a much easier position to play because of the less wear & tear it offered him compared to the SG position. In MJ’s opinion, the SG position caused more wear & tear on his body because he was always banging with bodies especially down low in the paint. He was also playing off-ball which required more movement. PG was easier for him and better for his body. If MJ played & stayed at the PG position he would’ve persevered himself much more & for far much longer.

Also just goes to show you how pointless triple doubles are. If a great player has the ball in their hands the whole game, there's a good chance he will stuff the stat sheet bc all the offense is being generated by that player. Unfortunately it takes an incredible amounts of energy to muster up those efforts - which is why the superguard model tends to flame out in the playoffs or eventually loses to a more ball sharing system. See James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Luka Doncic, and LeBron James as prime examples. That style of basketball lends itself to underachievement as it is a primitive style of basketball. That's why Phil Jackson/Tex Winter were so instrumental in making MJ a winner.
@TheRealMindCrime4 ай бұрын
Agreed! Stats are just stats. The triangle turned this team into a winning unit.
@Josh-sk5xd4 ай бұрын
The only way you can win in that Heliocentric System is by stacking the deck & forming a Superteam, and while having the League/Refs bail you out smh Harden almost did it in 2017 or 2018 without a Superteam & without League interference but he’s a choker & has low Bball IQ so they lost a winnable series smh That wouldn’t happen with MJ in the same circumstances!

Slightly disagree with you on 80’s (& 90’s) assists. I was watching a LA Lakers game & the commentator explained that the reason got the assist on a fast break is the definition at the time was that the receiving player can have a stabilising dribble. Even in this video around the 11:30 mark,n the Bulls player has a “stabilising dribble” before scoring. If you take away any stabilising dribble, assists statistics would closely resemble that in FIBA rule basketball - about 2 less per game than the NBA. Still, I agree that the current definition of what entails an assist is more lenient.
