@@jacobhayes8324 Do they love the part where he punched out 2 teammates? Or that he knew the winning color icon on the Jumbotron races before they were played during the game because he asked the staff ahead of time and then he went and bet teammates and coaching staff money on the cartoon races so that he could giggle to himself and take their money? @@imtryinghere1 I guess my words weren't particularly clear. MJ is one of the most beloved players all time. But many people until recently did not know how much of an ass he was. @@Sandmanoutdoors Putting athletes on pedestals is as American as apple 🍎pie. We've always done it. We always will. The difference is white people don't tear down Wayne Gretsky, Joe Namath, Michael Phelps, Jack Nicklaus and other giants in their sports who wanted to win was much as Michael did. Black super athletes are under the microscope and dissected in ways that their white counterparts aren't. I would never put any person on a pedestal no matter what their talents are, but I can recognize their extraordinary contributions to the industry they represent. I wish Michael was more socially conscious and culturally aware. However I lived in Chicago from 1990 until the beginning of 2001. I saw up close and in person what MJ went through especially right after his father died. I work in the entertainment industry and I don't know that many athletes or entertainers could have handled the personal/professional pressure cooker he was in. Add to that the BS his sister pulled-- it's a miracle he didn't lose his mind. There is no question MJ GLOBALIZED the NBA in a way that made it a mega-profitable powerhouse. As a fan I'm grateful I had a chance to witness the phenomenon that is MJ. This is coming a rabid LeBron James fan, but I can give credit when and where credit is due.

Sometimes people transcend racial tensions by being great at something. Jordan inspired so many people. There are some of us that see people as people regardless of the color of their skin. If that is a quote from Les Brown, a person of color is better able receive that msg from a man of color seeing as it comes from the experiences of a "black" man who faces the challenges that not only a black man faces, but overcomes. Truth. I remember in the early 2000s a story came out that Jordan was paying off a woman to keep quiet about their affair. He was paid her like $250K. Then she tried to extort him, demanding $5 million to keep the secret. Jordan came out instead and admitted to it. This was like 2002, so it was kind of mentioned then glossed over. Another story, porn star Kylie Ireland said she had met Jordan at a hotel. She asked her boyfriend if she could do Jordan as he was obviously a huge celebrity and a once-in-a-lifetime hookup. The boyfriend (probably a porn star himself) said sure go ahead with it. Plus many other stories that you would have only heard about if you read certain magazines you find in the grocery store, or stayed up for Entertainment tonight at 11:30pm. That's the way it was for all male celebrities, and that's why the older ones (like Cuba Gooding, Jr.) are catching cases. They didn't adapt to the new reality: you can't just pump and dump groupies anymore. You know who REALLY wouldn't have liked social media: MAGIC JOHNSON.

Lot to unpack in this segment! Let's start with Ali. I grew up in a white flight suburb of Chicago, and Muhammad Ali was beloved by my generation (late boomers). My dad, a WWII vet, loved him. Ali was the most popular athlete and most famous person in the world for a long time. (Ali, Jordan, and Walter Payton remain my all-time favorite athletes.) Hughley's contention that Ali wasn't accepted until he got sick seems to me a tremendous overstatement. Craig Hodges' virtual absence from the Last Dance saddened me. He was more key to the first two championships than some of the role players featured in the documentary. He also had an effect on the game itself, although The Last Dance (like the 30 for 30 featuring NY v IND), reminded me how much more entertaining the game was before the 3pt shot became dominant. Back when Jordan played, I was very disappointed when he declined to assist NC Senate candidate Harvey Gantt at all, neither in 1990, nor in 1996. It was a personal disappointment: I'd worked on the 1983 Southern Crusade, a very successful black voter registration campaign that, while it did not show the results we'd hoped for in 1984, was crucial in the election of black candidates at all levels over the next ten years. The photo Dolores Jordan asked her son to pose for may very well have unseated Jesse Helms. We could be living in a different world. Jordan's comment about shoe buyers stung. But there are few great athletes, artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers whose personal lives can match their achievements. The works live on (even in sports: in the record books, and in the modern era with ever-improving preservation of the great moments of sports); the persons do not. I have chosen, with a few egregious exceptions, to separate the art from the artist. That's contrary to cancel culture, but I think great art will outlast cancel culture, just as it survived its critics and time itself. And, although he seemed super-human at the time, Mike is human, he has the right to live his own life. I'll always love him for the joy his indomitable will to win gave me, my friends, my erstwhile city. When you do find an athlete or artist whose life can stand with or even above their achievements, it is a rare and wonderful thing. In the always personal argument about the NBA GOAT, in my heart and mind only two players vie with Michael Jordan: Kareem Abdul Jabbar & Bill Russell. I'm not talking favorite (that would be MJ, though I love the other two), it's about the GOAT. Kareem has a strong case that Hughley articulates as well as anyone, but so does Russell. If it's all about rings, crown Russell, with 11. He also had to win them face to face against the most dominant player of his era, Wilt Chamberlain (who is not on my short list because...Russell). While I don't agree with everything DL says, he's a thoughtful and engaging interview. Thanks.

I grew up in Maryland with two progressive parents but my Grandparents were life long Southerners living in North Carolina since before the early 1900's. Needless to say when we visited there was a certain comfortability with the N-word in my Grandparents house. My Grandmother was a hard core Republican and thought Jessie Helms could walk on water. I remember when Harvey Gantt was running for office. I was visiting on leave from the military. I would ask my Grandmother if she was voting for Harvey....I can't repeat what she said but I would counter that we were in the privacy of her home and she could admit she was voting for Harvey and I wouldn't tell anyone and she would really flip out. My dad would ask me why I loved to wind her up so much. All I could say was I like using her racism against her and tormenting her in the process. I thought it was hilarious.

Honestly I have and still remain firm on my stance toward MJ. One of the greatest ever but a horrible person. All those years kids in inner cities were murdered behind his shoes that negro never said a word. You never saw him give any of his time for anything or anyone charitably. I use to think Kobe was the same way until I saw countless videos of him and his children, showing up to speak to other pro athletes, supporting women's basketball and laughing with other ball players. Right now MJ is trying to save his legacy by all of the sudden getting involved with the black lives matter movement when really it boils down to preserving his sneaker sales. MJ never stood for a damn thing and no one else. He doesn't even appear to be a good friend to his adult children. You never see him with his kids or hanging out with his sons. The proof is in a man's actions.

He was the most famous but also the most private that’s why the fans were excited to see behind the scenes stuff and also why it’s a big deal when he does make a statement or does an interview. The notion that if he played now he wouldn’t be able to adapt or any of the players from a generation ago would somehow falter under the lights of social media is laughable. I don’t thinks we’d see him making burner accounts and fussing with the fans like KD or showing his workouts to show how “dedicated “ he is. He’d still be the same but just move more cautiously. Fans would still love him bc at the end of the day he’s a killer and whether you’re a fan or not you know he’s legit.

The popularizing of the NBA & Michael Jordan was done by Lauren Michaels, executive producer of Saturday Night Live. He was hired by NBA Commissioner David Stern to make the NBA a global.brand. He accepted the job with one stipulation, that he could use Jordan's image & likeness as the face of basketball all around the world & Stern agreed. Lauren Michaels was also charged with marketing the 92 Olympics Dream Team where he, Nike,& Jordan's agent, David Talk all collaborated on to promote Michael Jordan as the GOD of basketball. David Falk is also a big reason why Isiah Thomas is vilified by many mainstream NBA reporters today which is another story altogether.

“Commerce over conscience.” Jordan chose the neutral path not knowing neutrality sides with the oppressor. He’s still the GOAT in my opinion. But I don’t expect him to use his power and platform to speak out against injustice of his own ppl. He’s not built that way. I’ve only heard him speak out twice in the last 30 plus years. And both times, I feel like he was pressured to say something because of Lebron James. Lebron has the heart and mindset of Jabbar, Russell, Craig Hodges, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, Muhammad Ali.

@@jaystacks5249 the problem is these effeminate boys of today don't know what a man really is they think having female tendencies and being rude blunt without any remorse is a man but in actuality that is a female not knowing how to control their emotions and not knowing how to deliver what they need to say in a respectful firm clear manner without pushing people's buttons, these little boys of today think just because it's the way you feel should be okay and people should accept it because it's your opinion but everybody that has an opinion doesn't need to talk. And real men understand that type of language females get offended by language like that when you're honest firm but without judgment. Imagine a female bossing other females around acting like a straight up B because she thinks she's better then other females. I'm pretty sure most men won't like that female and most people won't like that female, same as Jordan. Men are supposed to put are bias to the back( meaning the bias towards Michael Jordan because he is a great basketball player and wealthy, give me a break. We see where the wealthy privileged and Powerful got us in the world today right.....okay then) and understand right is right and wrong is wrong and teach our young men/boys and females how to act and treat someone, instead of all this chaos we have today with people purposely disrespecting others thinking they are tough or they are right because they're passionate or because they may do something better than someone else but when it comes to being an actual human being, there probably the worst on the Earth. It's time for us real men that are top firm but also wise and logical to show people how things really should be done instead of all these narcissistic emotional lustful never contempt with anything wanting it all type of people running things showing people how they think the world should be ran. Too many of these Michael Jordan Donald Trump type of mindsets out here with men acting like females not understanding how to treat people, thinking their way is the right way because in there psychotic conceited Minds they are the top of the food chain and everyone else shouldn't bow on their knees to them. Plus in my opinion Scottie Pippen made those teams stick Like Glue together, not Michael Jordan. It wasn't until Scottie Pippen matured into the player he became giving those Bulls team the opportunity to mature and become a team. Michael Jordan's way wasn't working, he could only bring them so far because he wanted all the shine without giving anybody else an opportunity. It was not until Phil Jackson pretty much forced Michael Jordan to allow Scottie Pippen to grow and the team took off. Perfect example when Scottie Pippen had that migraine game 7 against the Pistons, the Bulls got smoked. Michael Jordan couldn't bring that team together but as soon as Scottie Pippen was completely healthy the next season they took off and Scottie Pippen was pretty much closing out the games. Of course Michael Jordan got the last shots to win the game but Scottie Pippen was doing the work to take out those teams, especially against the Pistons and Lakers that first year they won that championship. Pippin should have gotten Finals MVP when they beat the Lakers but even though the NBA is a basketball game it's still nothing but politics and they had to give Michael Jordan all the glory because he was the face of the NBA. A blind man could have seen that if you are old enough to remember those times. Now I broke down what a man is and how Michael Jordan over glossed his so-called right hand man for people could view him like some God. He was nothing but a flawed man(like all of us)that was extra competitive with some type of mental illness( because he doesn't know how to let things go and forgive, usually that is somebody with bipolar) and a psycho mindset.

True. Prior to that point the best position was the center and forward positions due to having big 7'0 tall guys. Strange hearing this, but Jordan was considered undersized at 6'6... years later enter A.I., Steph who're pushing 6'0. Point being, MJ changed the game making the guard position enviable and future guards modeled their game after him.

Another reason is older men won't let his memory die because when he was winning those years were great times in their lives. They don't want those memories to ever leave. Mike was a shooting guard, the guy who gets all the focus and attention if the team succeed. He had the famous moments every basketball fan would like to be in and have success.
