Michael Lockshin on Russian backlash to 'The Master and Margarita' | AP interview

Filmmaker Michael Lockshin was about to begin editing his adaptation of Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov's beloved novel "The Master and Margarita" when Russia invaded Ukraine two years ago. Lockshin knew immediately he wouldn't return to Russia, where he grew up, as he spoke out against the war and Russian President Vladimir Putin. His film, starring August Diehl, Claes Bang, Evgeniy Tsyganov and Yulia Snigir, was released in January without his name on it and topped the Russian box office. State propagandists have since attacked him and the film, which is seeking a new international distributor. Lockshin spoke with The Associated Press in Los Angeles about the irony of the backlash to the film, how everyday Russian audiences are responding - and his pessimism about the future of the arts in the country. #MichaelLockshin #themasterandmargarita #interview #entertainment #russia

Этот фильм стал словно ложкой меда в бочке дегтя. Выйди фильм в другое время, такого впечатления, он бы, наверное, на меня не произвел, однако в нынешних обстоятельствах многие моменты чудовищно остро попали в цель

The movie was.. well, I don't know, the book is really a great thing.. anyway, it was a novel approach. Politics having an effect on this is just a reflection of what Bulgakov was writing about.

Excellent movie - the best adaptation to date thanks mostly to the screenplay by Roman Kantor and Michael Lokshin , acting ,music and set designs! If this film would be shown in international film festivals certainly it would sweep all awards! Art should go beyond boundaries of politics and I don’t understand why someone would politicize it! If someone censors this film is definitely not Russia when anybody can go see it . For director banning this film in Russia would be the best PR ever ,since from the premiere film set up the historic record in viewers and money. Maybe that’s why director peddles on political divisions instead on finding common ground and see this as an art form ! I would focus how to get this film for worldwide audience because it is one of the best movies ever recently produced and those who are opposing this to happen are the real censors.

I'm not the only one to say that this movie is better than the book. It has so many tiny details in it, so many layers... Another meta-layer is that Michael is The Master.
