Following a screening at TIFF 2015, director Michael Man discusses his iconic film, HEAT.
Bringing Robert De Niro and Al Pacino together on screen for the first time, Michael Mann's magnum opus ranks among the greatest crime films of all time. Hard-boiled ex-con Neil McCauley (De Niro) is the leader of a crew of seasoned stickup artists who operate with grim determination and military discipline. When a last-minute replacement on his team leads to a bloody triple murder during an armoured truck robbery, McCauley is targeted by veteran detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino), whose fanatic dedication both mirrors and contrasts with McCauley's ruthless professional expertise. "Top three Mann. A film that is part of the lexicon of the medium. A stark western set in a hyperreal L.A." (Guillermo del Toro).

I was eleven when I first saw it, in the cinema with my dad. I'd already seen and fallen hopelessly in love with Last of the Mohicans; used to daydream about being Daniel Day-Lewis's character, saving various female classmates from the bad Indians. Heat was the one that really lasted with me though. I think they're both fabulous films but when people ask my favourite film of all-time it's always Heat.

Learn something new every time I watch Heat, but I never realized (until the director said it in this video) that Hannah picked up on something while having coffee with Neil. Something so innocent at the time ended up being so important. Masterpiece.

Every actor, regardless if it's Oscar winning actors like in HEAT or some rotten tomato bomb, brings a unique perspective to their portrayal of their character. It isn't so much about Michael Mann or Pacino and De Niro, but a symbiosis of script, directing and acting chops. This script has been incubating for a long time before Al or Bobby even knew of it. The success of this move and any movies in general are on the actors and what they bring to the table.

When I was in high school I worked at a Radio Shack down the street from my house. It was on the brink of closing because it was hard to find and barely anyone came in. The assistant manager and I would turn Heat on all the TVs and then hook up all the surround speakers we could and crank it up for the shootout. It was awesome. You felt like you were in the middle of the actual shootout. That and the “she got a great ass” line were so much better hooked to a dozen surround sound speakers lol

Mann’s usage of sound was so revolutionary. You never saw the gore but you heard the enhanced heightened sound of like a knife twisting into a stomach. Shit like that really left an impression on me. The sound itself was more visceral and gruesome. This man flips contradictions on their heads.
