Its a pretty polarising adaptation, but I quite like it, or at least certain aspects of it. The kills look genuinely unpleasant, and the killing of the janitor, especially, is just downright tragic. The whole movie just has this very melancholic undertone. I honestly consider it to be one of Zombie's better films. I honestly don't think he was going for a straight remake of the original. It honestly feels more like a deconstruction of Halloween, and slasher films in general. Also, Joe Grizzly (bitch) was fucking incredible.
