Michael Nyman
Memorial for Large Ensemble
Sarah Leonard, soprano
Michael Nyman Band
Michael Nyman, conductor
Gypsum: Antonio Canova, Hecuba and the Trojan women offer the peplum to Pallas Athena (detail), 1790-1792, Milan, Gallerie di Piazza Scala.
Memorial is an epic funeral march-like piece, composed by Michael Nyman around 1984-1985. [...]
Nyman explicitly dedicated Memorial to the memory of the Juventus F.C. fans killed in the Heysel Stadium tragedy, in May 1985. [...]
The composition borrowed a musical phrase from Baroque composer Henry Purcell's King Arthur, the prelude to ‘What Power Art Thou’, sung by the Cold Genius in Act III*, but the phrase is repeated in countless times, in a minimalist fashion. The composition is dominated for the first two-thirds by the string and horn sections, backed up by bass guitar, and a drummer. Soprano Sarah Leonard comes in only in the last third of section, and her performance mainly consists of long wordless complaints, adding a dramatic effect to the composition. Her song is continuously an octave higher than the rest of the orchestra, thus creating a haunting effect that suggests pain and sorrow.

One thing I think a lot of the commenters below are missing is the utter horror that forced Nyman to compose this piece. In May 1995 the Heysel disaster happened. Nyman is a massive football fan, this piece is his reaction to the atrocity that happened that day.

I saw the exhibit and can tell you it was meant to be controversial. This music also forms a lietmotif for The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover by Peter Greenaway. The film also contains other, provacative themes and interplay between corruption and religious purity. Throw in the scene playing on the East wall of the Exhibit (the fashion show from Fellini's Rome) and the centerpiece referring to the legendary female Pope, and you have enough evidence to clearly infer the worst intentions. I spend a lot of time at the Met and Oasis Tours is a major customer, often running several groups at a time for Christian visitors and they are outspokenly and vocally critical of and at odds with the curators of the Met. It is my strong suspicion the Met management used this exhibit to provoke Oasis, thereby getting the last word in the debate and simultaneously boosting revenue by inciting rage -visits. I am not a fan of Oasis as I think they are incendiary themselves but the Met's gala and exhibit this year were distasteful and crass. They wouldn't dream of disrespecting other cultures in such a way but felt the middle-American Christian majority was fair play. It was poor form and a lot of insiders agree.
