All right, back here on StudyBall for our second Michael Penix tape. We looked at Oregon a little bit earlier in the week. Really, really good table, a lot to like about Michael Penix. As I said in the intro of that tape, he was better than the beginning of the season than he was later in the season. Not quite as many big games later in the season, so I wanted to kind of dive into one of those games. I looked at a bunch of them, and decided on the Utah game. Again, apologize for the view from above, it's eye from the sky, we always say that, but this one is high in the sky so it's tough to tell the results at all times with these tapes of Michael Penix. But let's dive into the Utah tape and see if we can see some of those similar things that we saw earlier in the year against Oregon. #michaelpenixjr #nfldraft2024 #nfl

When your whole offense is based around the deeper throws, defense prepare for that so it becomes a bit more difficult to do that. He definitely needs to clean some things up but man, I'm a big fan. Someone is gonna get a steal with this kid. Not a Raiders fan but I'd really like for them to take a hard look at him.

I really think he’d have a strong case for qb1 if it weren’t for the fact he’s had 3(might be wrong and it’s 2) season ending injuries already and is a little older, but man I love watching him play

@@chrisfontaine5124he passed his combine medical exams. He is greenlighted much, will depend on offensive schemes and his fit in them. If he goes to the right team with scheme and personnel, he’s going to wow a lot of people he is my QB one because he is an elite processor already, he understands the game, much better than almost any college quarterback has coming out. He is on par as a processor pre-snap and post snap of Manning and luck in my book.

With Penix, my analytical mind wants to see stats on his left vs his right. Can an nfl defense simply make an adjustment like baseball defenses and maybe even gain advantage because he is a lefty. Can he set and throw left? And how does he fair when college defenses play him with heavier zone coverage on the right side of the field?

Would be really nice if there were end zone views too. Maybe they don't have that for college games?

Hey Kurt, could you not get access to tapes of a Road game?? The game against USC was fantastic; arguably to 2 top QBs going at it & Penix won.

The problem is that USC's 2023 defense was absolutely awful all-around, so it would not have been a fair assessment of Penix's skills. Heck, the Huskies RB managed to get a season-high 256 rushing yards against them. Yet, despite having a cupcake defense to support him, Caleb Williams still managed to carry the Trojans to a tie in the second half.

Complaint is that he didn't play well against Michigan. Yes I'm a homer, but the SEC refs let Michigan hold UW receivers well past the line of scrimmage. Suddenly these guys can't get open. It was so bad that the neutral announcers were even calling out holds they thought should of been called. It was the equivalent of refs not calling fouls and letting a team constantly hack shooters in a basketball game.

Michigan had a pro level D line. What hurt Washington was having no running game. Their rb Johnson was hurt. One dimensional is much easier to defend for any defense.
