I disagree about him being underrated. We just don’t talk about swimming at all. But when we do. His name is always mentioned. He’s synonymous with Olympic swimming. He’s the only swimmer most people can name. Trust me he’s not underrated. He just got voted #1 in the top 100 athletes in the last 15 years.

I also consider Phelps the GOAT of all sports. What he did is so beyond incredible in a world wide sport. He dominated to such a extent that he basically retired because it got boring. He still could have kept going.

I played sports well into my 40's, never a pro, never great. I was Randy Brown in basketball, Joel Youngblood in baseball . Lockdown fullback in soccer. I did kill at badminton , haha. I'm 55, still skateboard. I love seeing greatness. I get emotional because I always gave it everything I had but never scratched greatness and just seeing Phelps, hearing him speak...my repect is through the roof. Being okay at sports is tough, being great is superhuman. The mental toughness it takes, the gratitude for having a chance to be great at what you love is something most people will never experience.

Was at a football game in Columbia in the late 2000's, and he came out at halftime with his gold medals. Got invited to a party after the game, but we couldn't make it because of an early round of golf in Greenville the next morning. The next day, the picture comes out of Phelps hitting a bong, at the party we were invited to 😂 He was an unbelievable athlete, and gave hope to stoners everywhere!

If you are including all sports where there is physical competition then cricketer Donald Bradman ( career from 1928-1948) would statistically be considered the greatest of all time . I would bet you all I have that if an american baseball player from yesteryear had a BA of around .610 and the next was Ty Cobb at .366 you’d never have an argument about the greatest sportsman of all time

Swimming is an extremely difficult sport and what he achieved may not ever be accomplished again. Phelps is atop goat of mountain with Brady / Jordan / Tiger Woods / Bolt .

28 medals... 23 of them gold. Most decorated olympian of all time, qualified for the olympics at 15, competed in 5 different olympics from 2000-2016, set 39 world records in that time, 29 of which were individual records. You're tripping.

Someone from America has to win the 10k open water. That's the coolest swimming event. They drink Gatorade off of fishing poles. They have fishing poles with the country flag on it and a bottle of drink and the swimmer has to grab and take a swig in the water while swimming. It looks like sea world trainer stuff. They train in the hotel pools with bars for that. Hell yeah, they're stone cold swimmers.

The biggest one was his body produced almost no lactic acid so he was able to train longer and harder than everyone else. Biles does likely have a legitimate reason to take the drug but it is a big advantage to gymnasts.
