This just makes me like Phelps more. The media treated him outragously for his mistakes and the fact that he didn't turn into a "bad boy" like the media was making him out to be and instead become an advocatew for the people facing the problems he was is the kind of heart it takes to win 8 gold medals

As a former swimmer I can completely attest to how badly training mangles your body and rips it up - myself and most of my friends who used to swim all have debilitating chronic injuries in our early 20s that will screw us for life. Marijuana is one of the only things that can actually help me recover when I work out from my chronic pain - what an absolute joke that he got in trouble for hitting a bong (yes it was a different time) but come on this man deserves justice smh

This just shows people in a nutshell. Make Phelps higher than life so you in a way view him as more than human. He works extremely hard to accomplish something never done. And something as simple as smoking Marijuana which is beyond acceptable today. And to watch people have extremely harsh takes over something minor when deep down they've either made mistakes similar or far worse but the expectations for them are far lower.

The fact that he came back after each of these mishaps to win medals at the olympics shows how great he is. He was one of the biggest stars on the planet, sure he cracked under pressure, but he got the help he needed, brought it back, and when the lights were the brightest, he was once again, unbeatable.

Marshawn Lynch has a similar resume of mistakes & the media tried to shame him around when he left Buffalo. Years later he finally gave them the finger showing that apologizing, in our culture, opens the door for the BS. Being unapologetically him meant they no longer had the rug of perfection to pull from him. Phelps, by age 31, resume consisted of winning 28 Olympic medals (23🥇, 3 🥈 & 2 🥉), 1 DUI 🥃 & he possibly didn’t inhale 💨 like Clinton. Sounds like a high achieving American to me & that free-will results us in more good than the bad choices we like to focus on. The bandwagons full for greatness & it reveals the less forgiving when the opportunity to jump ship presents after something has gone wrong. Thank you Phelps for what you brought to the state of Maryland. We’ll take you over what most of these others states are left with as Legends

This young man has been hounded by media and his friends with whom he shared a bong (pot). This was it self akin to being stabbed in the back. Praised one day, no forgiveness for the second. And he did it again with the DUI, for that, yes, I agree; he should have been chastised. But he was a young man. Each and every parent has gone through these types of issues with their own Children but NOOOO Michael was NOT ALLOWED TO BE YOUNG. Hypocrisy rules. Shame on everyone who bashed him about.

The DUI was beyond dumb. Inexcusable. The rehab was a very good call and from what I've gathered probably saved his life. All the rest, though? Just imagine the pressure. If you think you wouldn't break you are a fool. Also whoever leaked that bong pic should go fuck themselves. Dude won everything there was to win and decided to get a gap year and be a 23-year-old doing 23-year-old things. Then everyone was surprised he too liked to party.

Exactly what downfall? Kids need to start looking up to their parents and people around them as role models. Famous athletes are never or almost never what people make them out to be. Phelps was just a human being that made normal mistakes for a young person. I don't believe he ever proclaimed to be a role model, other people made him that. I believe he is doing just fine.

I've gotta say, I personally did not like this video. I found your coverage of the whole situation disappointing uncritical. It felt like the entire time you were relatively complacent with the media coverage of the whole ordeal, and maybe you are (I doubt it considering your reply to another comment), or maybe you wanted to avoid injecting your personal views in the video, but I would have liked to hear a more opinionated recollection of the series of events given the title and the fact that most people clicking on this probably already know the details of the story. Especially in your coverage of the bong picture vs. the DUI, your unwillingness to be critical of the media coverage read to me like you were silently in agreement that they were equivalent offenses. I think the bong thing was a total non-issue beyond his marketability, but the DUI was actually a major mistake that was really significant and offered a great opportunity for the U.S. news cycle to leverage the situation into a warning about the dangers of drunk driving, but instead, they predictably used it to chastise Phelps the same way they did when he was smoking weed at a party in his early 20s. Personally, I understand if your goal with this video was just to provide an unbiased look at the accomplishments and failures of Michael Phelps as a competitor and public figure. However, I think that in your attempts to be unbiased, you end up passively endorsing the views of the media you're sourcing. This is a very self-serving comment and I hope you don't take anything I say too personally; I hope your channels grows and you find success on the platform. Please don't take it to heart, I just wanted to share my feelings here because I felt them really strongly.
@tam11225

I usually wouldn’t bother to respond to a comment that says something like “I don’t like this video” but honestly I really appreciated this comment lol. I did try to remain unbiased but also express the extreme (and unwarranted) criticism that the media gave him. But besides that. Your comment is filled with discussion and an opinion you passionately wanted to share, which made me feel so happy. When making this video, I wanted to make something that could either inform or start a debate. And your comment shows that it is capable of doing that. And plus you gave me some good feedback I can take into account as I continue to make videos. Some comments will just say something like “this sucks” or “no, you’re wrong”. So I seriously appreciate your response and the advice you gave. Thank you for watching!

I think he is the absolute legend. The way he was treated is so unfair. As I do blame him for DUI, the other stuff are pretty normal for everyone else. People forget he is a human being, he was a kid, with unimaginable pressure of the whole nation. They forgive much worse behaviour of actors, politicians, musicians, but not athletes. They are not allowed to make a mistake, they are not allowed to try to live like regular people. The only shady thing with him was his gold over Cavic. Not sure who won that one, Omega claimed that Cavic didn't press the plate hard enough. But, nevertheless, that doesn't take away anything out of his greatness in a pool.
