Yeah but in Serbia it's Popovic (with one i) and it's a pretty popular last name there (also in Bosnia, Montenegro and in Croatia). Idk about David's ancestry but yeah it's basically same last name, that's probably why some people think he's Serbian

Despite name Popovici is plain ethnic Romanian, has no Serbian ancestry. That is due to the fact that all the Orthodox Christians in north west Balkans, including many and mostly Romanians, former Romans of Balkans, as part of Ottoman empire or Hungarian kingdom were registered for centuries to the Serbian church and their names also got Serbianized. Those who remained outside Romanian principalities were fully assimilated in time while those who remained inside Romanian principalities just kept their Serbianized names. Obviously there were also Serbs settled inside Romanian principalities but they kept their names and ethnicities, as Romanians have no such habits to forcefully assimilate anyone or change their names. Thats why there are more Hungarians today in Romania than 100 years ago and ll have Hungarian names. Even those Romanians who were forced to translate names to Hungarian, during Hungarian occupation of Transylvania still have same names, even though their ancestry was Romanian for centuries.
