I think Phelps main thing was his Olympic medals and not his records. Records come and fall all the time, but gold medals don't. He solidified his versatility to dominate anything he tried. If he wanted an unbeatable world record, he would have focused on maximum 2 events if that was his goal. But it evidently wasn't; his goal was max medals as possible.

Doesn't matter either way people saying he is the next Phelps is such a delusional and honestly just poor intentioned statement. All of his records are broken because as it's always been, people specialize in events. No one will ever touch Phelp's combination of being good at so many events, and doing it for so long. Phelps already had 6 golds when he was 3 years younger than Marchand is now, and when he WAS Marchand's age, he won his 8 golds at Bejeing. Marchand is only in 4 events in his prime. I love Marchand and am so happy for him, it's not about hating on him, it's about comparing him to Phelps does nothing but create a false perspective, and when you look at the full picture, disminish Marchand's accomplishments by comparing him to am impossible feat. Assuming Marchand added 2 more events (Highly unlikely since he is already in his prime), and assuming he never has a bad race and wins gold in all of them, he still wouldn't quite be half way to Phelp's Gold medals. Nothing but a disservice to compare hin, or anyone, to Phelps.

Katie Ledecky is a nine-time Olympic champion and twenty-time world champion in the deep pool since 2012. She is the only swimmer in history to have won four individual titles at the same world championships, in Kazan in 2015. She is also the current world record holder in the 800m and 1,500m freestyle. A precocious swimmer, she won an Olympic title at the age of 15 in 2012 in the 800 m freestyle. Her international titles and world records have earned her five Swimmer of the Year awards. By winning the 1500m and 800m at the 2023 World Championships, Katie Ledecky has now won sixteen individual titles at the World Championships, becoming the most decorated swimmer in the history of this competition, men and women combined.

@@educatedduck6618 To be fair, France doesn't have the relay depth that the U.S. had in Phelps' era. One swimmer out of four can only do so much. Phelps won 13 individual golds in his career and that really should be the objective.
@educatedduck6618
@educatedduck6618 2 ай бұрын
@@edmerc92 Yea true true, I can level with that for sure. Assuming he sticks with the 4 events he is doing this year, he would have to still win all 4 of them when he is 30, just to reach 12. I still think that is an extremely unfair standard, but definitley not impossible. Again, I love the kid, just not sure how realistic even 13 individual golds is.

Nah...nobody coming close to 23 gold medals anytime soon. Phelps was like the Nolan Ryan and Cal Ripken of swimming with longevity and performance. This kid might stack some Golds. Nobody else in history has made it to double digit golds. That's the hardest part of Phelps gold record is that he was beating swimmers way younger than him at the end of his career.

If leon could focus that hard, he could also, never say never. Phelps is a story about how heroes are made. U know like Sydney 2000 his debut olympics he didn't come close to the podium. He did well in athens 2004 and beijing 2008 he transformed himself into the awesome swimmer that he is. If someone wants 23 golds, they have to dedicate themselves to it - we don't know who wants it so bad
@edmerc92
@edmerc92 2 ай бұрын
@@Kat-zj5kd To win 23 golds, you also have to be from a country that can win a lot of relays. Phelps won 10 golds in relays! Marchand won't get to do that. The focus should really be on the 13 individual golds Phelps won.

@Kat-zj5kd 2 ай бұрын
@@edmerc92 oh yea, that's true, i didn't realise that 10 are in relays - thinking back yea sure. France has no chance at relays. But Marchand now is an early stage - he shouldn't bother comparing himself to phelps at the moment. If you have reached 8 - 9 golds, then you can think about it. right now he should focus on getting gold in just the next event. and thereafter train hard (Physically and psychologically) for the next one and do not bother comparing himself to phelps..

My only hangup with Phelps being the most decorated is that there are so many swimming events. If there were 10 events for being an out of shape bum every 4 years at the Olympics I'd be the most decorated. But seriously, how many different javelin throwing events are there? If they added backwards throwing, non dominant hand throwing, double throwing one at a time, double throwing at the same time, throwing two in one hand, 4 split however you like between hands, etc etc etc; I'm sure there would be a most dominant javelin Olympic athlete of all time.

Not even pretending to try to understand the sport of swimming or how it works lol. There are 4 different strokes and 2-6 different distances for each one, 4 relays, and 2 distances that include all 4 strokes in the same race. These aren't even remotely comparable to "throwing two at once or with one hand" they are actually completely different disciplines that require entirely different sets of skills.

Michael Phelps is such a good guy, I bet that he's rooting for Leon Marchand to break his record setting 13 Gold Medals. Records were made to be broken. In the world of tennis, I want to see Novak Djokovic break Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slam wins. If Novak gets to 25 Major wins I hope that the next generation of players will break Novak's record. Maybe it will be Alcaraz, maybe Sinner, maybe no one in our lifetimes. The same can happen in swimming too. Maybe no one will break Phelp's records in our lifetime... then there's the problem of doping.

Phelps won 4-8 gold medals in each of four different Olympics. This guy will NEVER come close to Michael Phelps.
@Kishinoo
@Kishinoo 2 ай бұрын
this "guy" is already better than him individually he swims faster than phelphs never did. the only things saving him are his team rate for race relay but it wont last long next JO he will surpass that and do every world record too 100m 200m crawl etc he is prepared for that with bobby his coach

@@Kishinoo we will see. He might break the French Record of five gold medals, but will he win ten gold medals?
@SolvedNC
@SolvedNC 2 ай бұрын
@@alanle1471he cant win 10 gold medals because you have to win relays for that. Which is not possible he doesnt have the team. But im sure he will just dominate the individuals. Only thing i wish in olympics would be to adjusts the timings of the different competitions. Some races this year were at the same time as others which means marchand cant compete in some of them, a bit of a shame tbh

Léon is a good swimmer but no Michael Phelps. The times get faster because the technique of the breaststroke has changed to closer to butterfly which cuts down time and wasn’t a thing when Phelps did it…
