He is a preeminent interpreter of Mozart, in demand around the world's opera stages. I hesitate to say, but perhaps nearly as good as my hero, Fritz Wunderlich, who to me remains the gold standard.

I understand your fear to betray your hero... :-) Schade is for me better for Mozart, especially in italian.

Certainly in my top 5 performances of this aria -- it's wonderfully nuanced! But there's something lacking -- it seems to me that the singing is kind of perfunctory and it doesn't come from a place of deep feeling -- rather it relies on the technical, the wonderful voice to carry it across the finish line. For me the emotion is lacking (not a lot) but what a wonderful voice/talent it is!! What is needed IMHO is to marry the talent/voice to a deeper connection to the underlying reason for the aria -- why is this character singing to someone and what is the message he wants to convey? I want to feel it, not just to listen to notes being sung. Make a tear fall down my cheek because it is so achingly beautiful. See Leopold Simoneau or Fritz Wunderlich for comparison.

A deeper emotional connection, yes, and a deeper vocal connection would help the low notes.
