TV series creator, writer, and producer Michael Schur discusses his book "How to be Perfect: The Correct Answer To Every Moral Question." Most people think of themselves as “good,” but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad”-especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.
Michael Schur is a television writer and producer who has worked on shows like The Office, Master of None, The Comeback, and Hacks, and created or co-created Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, and Rutherford Falls.

The Aristotelian idea of virtue connects with the buddhist teaching of the 8 fold path and the middle way. That's the starter 'textbook' for implementing virtue.

Loved the discussion (lightened by some gentle humor) around this difficult topic. "Moral fatigue" and the application of Aristotle's notion of balance seem critical to trying to live ethically without ending up like Chidi or Doug Forcett. Great interview!

How to be natural is a healthier and more rewarding goal that you dont need to think about very much or constantly. Seeking Perfection is a neurosis and toxic idealism that is meaningless

It’s actually normal and natural to want to be the best you can be

@@Andi-zd1xt No it isnt. That is a neurotically superimposed non-natural and trivial goal. It's natural to understand and recognise this Universal PRinciple.

Seeking perfection (for oneself) is a wonderful journey, one has to also be allowed (by oneself and others) to make mistakes while on that journey. I think you're mistaking it for 'wanting to be viewed as perfect' (by others) which implies not making mistakes.

to me, the title is a play on words. the word perfect is displayed as "perfec t" which is not perfect, followed by "the correct answer to every moral question", which is also an impossibility.

@@nazaziz6823 You've exposed yourself as the unemployed one. Otherwise, you'd know people only work 8 hours out of a 24 hour day. Which means they have at least 8 other waking hours in the day to listen to an interview.
