What upsets me is the fact that there are thousands of empty properties in the UK and thousands of homeless people either sleeping rough in the streets, sofa surfing or living in B&B's, Hostels and Hotels that the owners are charging councils extortionate rates for when that money should be going into building and refurbishing new housing stock. Forget about the red tape councils must go through to get a CPO for a empty building. I think laws need to be changed. if a land owner does nothing with a property and it stands empty for certain amount of time, and there has been no attempt to do anything with it, the council should have the right to seize the property without having to pay the previous owner a penny as they have had more then enough time to either restore it or sell it to someone who can restore it. Also the right to buy scheme needs to be abolished. There is absolutely no excuse why the 6th richest world economy has so many homeless.

Agreed : they buyers should have negotiated the vendors down hard, to £100,000 - £150,000. If there is no-one else in the market for the property, the buyers who should be driving the price paid, and walk away if the vendors wont budge : but advise the vendor if they have no buyer in 12 months, that your offer still stands. And there should be no emotion attached : don't pay a premium if the vendor is wanting the cash for personal reasons (retirement, medical). This is a pure commercial transaction. If the vendors were wanting more money they should have made some prior improvements to the property to boost value : otherwise you get what buyers are willing to pay for it.

Chris Gillingham I live here in the UK and property prices are just ridiculous in the south east of england where for a one bedroom flat you are talking anywhere from 220,000 to up to over a million. The 3 bed homes can cost anywhere between 430,000 to well over a few million plus. Abandoned properties including lost homes can go to auction houses which can vary from 28,000 to multiple millions depending on size and location.

Empty property speculating in the UK is a massive scandal. Especially ex council homes that were bought over since the 1980's when right to buy was introduced by Thatcher government ripe for speculators to make a big buck out of them.

Yes, agreed. The very first episode of Restoration Home was restoring a church and they did a beautiful job. It wasn't gutted and removed of personality, like the first example house they showed.

woah woah woah...so I can move to britain and squat in an empty home? You guys need to stop restoring these places I'm bored and looking for adventure - a transatlantic trip to occupy stolen land and an abandoned structure would totally be the ticket to some excitement. Except it probably gets cold there...I'd have to set up some kind system to regulate the air temperature inside - condition the air if you will.
