More than five months after he put his home up for sale, a professional photographer finally turns to design expert Sofie Allsopp and contractor Anthony Sayers for help transforming the dated interior of his Victorian home.

It's not that blue and yellow can't work together, it's that the shades and proportions were all wrong. If this had been a baby blue/midnight combo, with just strips of sunshine or baby yellow (instead of butter-yellow), it would have worked. But there was just too much contrast. But IMO, the worst 'crime' was painting brick in the first place. (I see painted brick, I wonder which gang tagged the building underneath the paint.)

I was thinking the same thing. I have a 120-year-old Victoria house of about that size. It's white, but when you see photos of them back when they were built, there's lots of color. I may paint it one day, but probably not as boldly as he did.

Did anyone else notice the hideous and cheap looking (1960's?) wrought iron columns on the front porch? They undoubtedly replaced the original wood ones years ago, they could so easily be replaced with metal poles surrounded with real wood (or even fiberglass) authentic looking columns. It was obviously an inexpensive quick fix that someone decided to just let ride. It RUINS the entry look!

I agree. I loathe the beige and neutral trend. I do, however, think that either white, cream or a soft colour is good when selling a house as it is something many people can live with until they make it their own. Jason Yanes you make a valid point and I know lots of people would agree with you. But even though neutral colors are "safe" and all, there are people who are annoyed by those neutral colors to the point where they would look elsewhere if house shopping. I see beige, tan, and putty colored walls and think "yuck". It's ugly to me, but also looks old and uncared for, almost dusty. A house shouldn't look sad, it should feel homey imo.

What are these people talking about? You don't look at how a house is decorated or furnished! You look at the location, the space and the bones of the house when deciding whether to buy or not. The furniture? You bring your own furniture and decorate it the way you like. The color scheme? Ever hear of paint? I wouldn't buy a house that is less then 2 feet away from my neighbor, but that's my preference, and from there you start talking price.
@grittykitty50
@grittykitty50 6 жыл бұрын
Bullettube, that's what I've been saying. Unless you are looking at a relatively new house, you'd better be looking at the plumbing, checking for evidence of water damage, and the general soundness of the structure. You'd also be advised to observe the neighbors and what's going on that block. If someone can't see past the current owner's decorating, they probably need to be living at home with Mommy and Daddy.
@purpleviolet72
@purpleviolet72 6 жыл бұрын
agreed, but most buyers have no imagination. I was able to see past the owner's original furnishings. The smell of smoke would be an issue for some, but you'd need to rent an ozone machine to clear that and some fresh paint and that would definitely make it more saleable.

When you decorate a home(with furniture) you are selling the possibilities of what the house can be. It’s not so much that people are trying to sell the furniture but rather, creating a vision for how it can look to the seller. I bought a cute ranch house last year..The furniture was pretty outdated(and or broken), the colors in rooms were very gaudy- My master bedroom is Lime Green- it made me hesitant. At first I couldn’t vision living here, it had a lot of work and it’s only 14 year old. We put in an offer and have been here for a year( it’s the yard that ultimately sold me), and I’m so glad we took a chance. It’s a silly concept, putting a bunch of furniture in a home/decorating it, but it actually sells a lot more homes than just leaving it empty. 😊

Jean Vignes - Agreed. I live in the house my granddad built 70 years ago. It was the first one built on my street. When my granddad passed in the late 90’s, I moved in. I redecorated the inside and just added shutters on the outside. Painted brick was not popular in this area back then. But over the years, more and more people around me started painting their brick homes, giving them a fresh, updated look, while mine looked drab and dated. I finally painted my brick in 2010, and I absolutely love it! I also put on a new roof with architectural shingles, changed the shutters, and replaced the ironwork on the porch with columns. Made the house look so much better! And the paint still looks as good as it did on day one. Yes, it will eventually need to be repainted, but if it’s done properly (removing any peeling or cracked paint) it will last a long time. Totally worth it.

+yesiownfrodo The episode was filmed over 2 years ago. In that time the house would have gone up in value about 200K. Toronto is still a hot market; prices are going to stabilize soon, maybe even drop a little.

It would help to remove the curtains and cloth items to help eliminate the smoke odor. The walls must also be cleaned. Removal of the exterior paint would help. The house should have remained original for a true admirer. George will not sell as is.

Added up with my yearly income it would take me 25 years of paying my whole entire years worth of pay to own this home. I've always been quite poor but have all I need. This house is one I dreamed of owning as child dreamer. I know live in 14 feet by 50 feet of space with my little boy. The cost to heat a home this big must years cost what I pay in 5 years. Reality sets in when you grown up lol

I find it strange that she thinks the house won’t sell because George hasn’t got the house decorated attractively. If I had been shown that house as a prospective buyer, I’d be imagining how I would decorate/furnish that little dressing room off the bedroom, etc., instead of how crappy his mattress looked sitting on the floor. You love the house for its features, not how the current owner has it furnished. He’s a bachelor, what did they expect??

I have been in Real Estate for 18 year's, and all these large real estate businesses have been around for many year's, but the Public still dosen't understand how it all work's!! Real Estate is a commodity, it dosen't make it worth more just because you own it! There are many factors that go into determining the VALUE of a property! Location, neighborhood, how old the house is and so on!A house that old more than likely has termite damage, and other problems could be learking in the house. It's best to have a home inspection before you list your house! This won't hold up the escrow.

The guy is a grifter. He has no real intention of selling this building. About the grey stuff: making houses NEUTRAL for sale is highly important. Then, people can 'see' their own changes and get all fired up. When it is highly decorated with lots of color, it puts people off. I made my living fixing up and selling old houses and follow this rule faithfully. A slightly off-white is best when in a cloudy climate, a soft yellow is best in sunny places.

People need to ignore the layout of rooms as they walk through homes and use their own imagination. When I walk through a house for sale the personal items, furniture layout, decor, etc. do not bother me or even impact my decision on the property. Each person's idea of the function of each room varies so to say that the house needs more function while it is being used by an existing owner or resident should just go in one ear and out the other to potential buyers. Also, the exterior of the house is just fine. The colors go well together and it has a unique look which makes it more valuable than the cookie cutter colors of the other homes. Oh on. The exterior was diminished in quality and went from fab to drab.
