I love the tenor beyond any. He brings the memory alive of luciano, the great Pavarotti who we had the pleasure to be at his gala concert Covent Garden. Who we personally met a few times. Alas it's past. But Michael Spyres is equal, his voice is a wonderful delight......

I've always greatly admired the tremendous combination of skills required of successful opera singers - music theory, vocal technique, acting, plus languages (especially Italian, French and German). Do most opera singers have a natural aptitude these core languages, given that I presume their studies focus on music and voice, or do many simply have to put in many hours of private study to become proficient in this particular aspect of their craft? It is a lot of work ! I mean you can be naturally gifted but even so you need to work really hard to have a great diction in every language you sing in. Sorry for my poor english, it isn’t my first language. I hope I answered to your question !

@falkfink Wrong decision from my perspective. Same as Netrebko singing Donizetti or Belini, or Domingo singing Count of Luna or Giorgio Germont, and many more other wrong decisions by singers who lost their voices and reputation due to poor decisions. I personally believe Spyres is doomed to failure by foraying into heldentenor roles. Good luck to him though.

This "Edwin guy" is Edwin Crossley-Mercer, one of today's best bass-baritones. Google him up. He is a splendid operatic voice and a recitalist (Winterreise and Die Schöne Magelone), who has sung all over the world and even put in an appearance with Pretty Yende last year on the 14th July concert at the Eiffel Tower. Despite the white streaks in his hair, he's only 40.
