Great advice. If only I had a field without trees surrounding it. Sometimes the ugly takeoffs are necessary to make flying an EDF possible while flying at a local field.

That was a great performance with the easy to fly Viper 90 although the video was bad it looked like the sky bit thanks for the tips as I'm just now getting into EDF jets after flying rc helicopters since 01.

This is exactly the video I wanted to watch. I'm still practicing on an eachine warbird, an eflite Cub s2 and a flight simulator, working up to taking my Parkzone 44" Spitfire on it's maiden flight this summer. But I've been dying to get into EDF and this video answered so many questions, thank you! I've been taking a long look at the RTF Habu as the best place to start, anyone here flying one?

I’ve been flying an AeroScout as my first plane. I have a HABU STS which will see it’s maiden this Friday. Then, once I get bored with it,(I doubt I will) I have a 15th Anniversary Viper ready to go.

Awesome Michael. Thats the excat jet I have and cant wait till I fly it agian this year.. weather starting to get stable here in the North. But mine is pretty hard to keep it straight when Im speeding up on the grass runway before take off.. I have tweaked it quite a few times but still the steering wheel moves too much. so I learned how to just counter steer it so its straight. If I just add the throttle to speed up it will go all over the place...

I am watching all your piloting lessons with interest. Thank you for your work. It's a pity that the work of the sticks is not visible in the video, as it is sometimes done in training videos. That would explain a lot. If it is not a professional secret of course ;)

Another great video Micheal. Got a question for you, If I can. when do manoeuvers such as CUBAN HEIGHT, do you, like I do with prop plane, reduce power when you go down portion? I have a new SebArt MB399 EDF, I just can't wait for summer to fly
@MichaelWargo

YEs... Making speed consistent on up and down lines is an important part of it as well as geometry

@@MichaelWargo thanks a lot for the confirmation Micheal. Another thing I did, is to slow down the response speed on throtle, so the EDF respond more like a turbine (spool up as well as spool down). It look and sound more scale and consume a bit a less energy every time I open throtle. will make you a video soon as the spring is back (leave in Quebec. where we manufacture snow for the rest of heart)

when / where exactly in the landing process is the best place / time to start dropping the flaps?......I am always afraid to put them down too early ( causing a slow speed tip stall ) .... ...thanks
@MichaelWargo
@MichaelWargo 2 жыл бұрын
I would do it when you feel it. Generally though, I add right after my final turn or just before. I have my 1st flaps in on my downwind leg. If it slows you down, then you get to add throttle which is great for controlling the plane and descent.

@MichaelWargo
@MichaelWargo Жыл бұрын
ON the avanti, I used either a 6s 4000 which is my favorite. A light one though. It is a Zippy, and not a high c discharge. This plane is so much better with a lighter battery.

Hobbyking doesn't even sell any edf jets anymore. It only has one outdated durafly vampire, but other than that, no more.

It's sad, because years ago they had some really, really cool jets including fiberglass ones. I just wish I had bought the Avios Mig, which also disappeared.

are you sure you don't have access to instant power on an edf? shouldn't be you don't have access to instant lift over the wings? my edfs out accelerate my prop planes no problem, but they stall easier when turning. also I get off the grass as quick as possible. I don't want to risk breaking my gear and I don't have such a massive flying field.
@MichaelWargo
@MichaelWargo 2 жыл бұрын
I am really referring to Typical Jet characteristics. It is really only the ramp up I am referring to. When you hit zero to full on a prop, it pulls at max near instantly. With an edf, it takes a bit more time. Granted, they are so powerful, it is not as noticeable as it used to be, but the Thrust curve is different than a prop.
@MichaelWargo
@MichaelWargo 2 жыл бұрын
For example, if you put an edf and prop side by side similar wattage to weight ratio, and raced them to 10ft, the prop would win easily. Prop would be there before the edf got very far, but the edf will be much faster top speed.

If you are dead stick and stall there is EDF ramp up time and you might very well loose the plane in the stall. Prop planes are a bit more instant. It can be good to keep a little power in.

Just a comment to EDF flyers is for them not to hog the runway for themselves (it can be antisocial), make sure your fan is well balanced to reduce noise and always declare when you are doing a low pass so that you don't hit anyone who might think about crossing the runway. It's great here that his throttle is at a logical level and the EDF is not noisy.

The problem there way to many R/C Flyers not R/C Pilots today. We all know them, every club has a couple. You know the guy that causes people to run for the shelter when he heads for the flight line. The guy everyone knows the FOOL is just one crash away from KILLING someone. Thank GOD for the non YANK & BANK guys. But there's the NumbSkull with more money than common sense. I don't care if these guys crash out past the Pilot Stations but when the regularly crash in or just lose it and fly over the pits and parking area, and no one says anything because he's with the IN CROWD.
