Great to hear how well the 33 1/3 are. The 45s are always interesting, but I am going more and more in the direction of just choosing 33 1/3 if I want to just enjoy spinning the records. I have no problems getting up and switching sides, but on one my records each side is like 6 minutes which is a bit on the silly end. With how well vinyl and the pressings are these days I think 33 1/3 are more than good enough for me.Thanks again for great content!

I just made a review of the AS release on our FB vinyl group, saying I could hardly imagine a better version than this, even though I never heard any other version before (i'm discovering Mingus). Haven't seen your video at that point, but now, i'm relieved! And yes, what a fantastic record!

Just got my 33 1/3 copy. Incredibly sounding. Thank you for the hint. It replaces my Jeanne Dielman copy which I got at about 2018, while no other releases were on the market. Though I must admit it was enjoyable and detailed like the high res stream, it thereby truly reaveled its digital origin. When it comes to resonance of the upright bass and physical listening experience, anybody needs to check out your recommended issue. Thank you so much. For the saint and the sinner lady I will stay with my Superior Viaduct pressing.

I 100% agree with you on TBS&SL. I like the 45RPM, but always felt it is lacking something, and then boom 33.3 made me realize it. Also, the 45rpm is kinda noisy for some reason. I have nothing to compare Mingus Mingus, but it sounds phenomenal, so I doubt I will need another copy.

Thanks for the comparison, Michael. It nice to know that the better sounding versions of these two important albums are both the ones that are most affordable + possible to buy and the ones present the music with the fewest interruptions (only 2 record-sides per album). Exciting about the 33 Black Saint winning out, not to toot my own horn but I believe I wrote, expecting this to be the case back when we got Out of the Cool. I never liked the sound of my 45 too much and thought it might use a worse tape. Now Im very eager to get my hands on the 33 and compare for myself. If I conclude the same then I feel even more strongly in my theory that AP got (for some releases) inferior tapes for their 2011 45s. Since the fire had just happened recently they may not have been able to relocate all the best tapes yet and got ones that Universal could find at the time. I dont see how else a Kevin Gray 45RPM mastering can ever lose to an RKS 33, even as I think 45 can be overrated ;^)

It is possible that we are seeing improvement on record sound even in the past 10 years. Mastering chains, vinyl formulation, just care for the product seems to be higher on audiophile products. My take on 33 vs 45 is if it's rock/pop and under 35 minutes I prefer to have the 33 pretty much all the time if there is an equivalent audiophile pressing. For Jazz I prefer to have the 33 almost always (unless it's a super long album like Miles Davis Porgy and Bess which is over 50 minutes long and recently reissued as a 45rpm by MOFI). With Jazz I like to sit back and groove more compared to listening consciously to folk or rock

I feel BS&SL is a more experimental album than MingusX5, Mingus’s gorgeous sounding bass isn’t in the spotlight as much as on the MingusX5 like the track ‘Mood Indigo’. It seems that BS&SL has a more collective vibe, a little less polish that others might find more appealing than MingusX5. I prefer MingusX5 personally because it’s more cohesive in terms of the bands performance and that fantastic bass sound. Sound-wise, pressing-wise there both incredible releases that I think set a new high watermark in how these jazz reissues can sound……And let’s not forget those stunning Stoughton jackets! We are truly living in great times.

I am disappointed with Pallas. As I delved into this record collecting thing, I started to hear the Pallas name get talked about and went out of my way to buy Pallas pressed records on various labels. I have had so many substandard records by them. There is no doubt they CAN make beautiful sounding records but way too many of my Pallas pressings have serious issues. It got to the point where I started to expect at least 2 or 3 very distracting noisy patches when I opened and played a new Pallas record. The very frustrating thing is, the problems look like they are easily avoidable, the result of a lack of basic care. debris allowed to get into the mastering/stamper/pressing process, careless handling etc. It's frustrating since I pay more for higher quality records to minimise problems since I live in the southern hemisphere and returning dud records is not feasible.

Hi Michael! I like your effort but after a repeating shoot-out the result is you are wrong. The Black Saint 33 1/3 cannot touch the older 45. On a very hi-end equipment the 33 1/3 , yes is punching in your face but in a very annoying way. No way, at least on the first two tracks, it is nearly as good sounding as the 45 rpm. Please shoot-out again yourself or have your equipment checked. Never mind!
