Thanks for the heads-up on Sam Records! It was in the back of my mind to check in on the site. Love their output, airways but direct from the label (the owner is a good guy, too).

Skipped Bill this RSD....well, so far 🤔 Did get the Mingus Live at Ronnie Scott’s which is great. The sound quality of the recording is excellent. If you can find it, I think you’ll love it Michael

I’ve been a big fan of the Resonance releases even though one of the discs in last year’s Charles Lloyd release had a serious warp. They put together well-thought out packages surrounding the music. The Morning Glory tape hiss is easily discernible, but it didn’t distract from the great concert performances for me and the mastering is excellent. I loved this one even more than I thought I would.

Fantastic releases..I'm bidding on both now. I know the La Barbera brothers.. Pat and John, both of whom played with Buddy Rich orchestra ..local.to.nyc I love albums with detailed liner notes ..one of my gripes with vmp is their lack of liner notes and pics..that's the point of doing a vinyl release.. being music aficionado or musician..we like details and the inside story.

You should also try to get the Art Pepper - Meets the rhythm section MONO RSD release from Acoustic sounds & Craft. It's really good sounding! I cannot recommend it enough.

Yes, thanks for the heads-up on Sam Records. I paused the video so I could go pre-order the title and added one of the Byrd’s I don’t have. I love the label and their (Fred’s) releases.

From RSD I impulse purchased the Doors: LA Woman Sessions box and in my scheme here, that's like being in the sessions. Great beautiful box, dead silent pressing, amazing sound and atmosphere. I fucking love it.

Michael, I have a question about VSS: how do you store the Elvis tripple record 24 Karat Hits in the VSS sleeve? Just curios here.. thanks!
@johnnymics2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on both of these Bill Evan’s RSD 2022 releases. Overall I’m happy as well. Were you able to snag the Mingus? I was able to get one at regular price and just received it today. I’m really enjoying it. Hopefully you scored, would love to hear your opinion on it.

I didn't get the vinyl on record store day. I decided since these are live recordings to get the CDs that came out a week later. Alas money has gotten tight, so I must be cautious with my spending. They sound great.
@michaellord97452 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I can get both releases on CD for a little less than half as much as just one of the vinyl releases. No brainer. I am concerned about intrusive audience noise so for me digital is the way to go here. I love vinyl but sometimes CD is the obvious choice especially at these inflated prices.

I feel like calling mastering engineers “a genius” might be a bit much, sometimes with jazz releases they are literally just checking levels and not touching it. Bill Evans fair enough - musical genius, agree on that. I am not too bothered about getting all these Bill Evans releases, I have “some other time” and that sounds amazing but can’t have too much piano trio personally. Are you getting Art Pepper or the Jazz Dispensary? For me those two are the winners of RSD ‘22

The Lester Young is a repress which I have already have (it’s fantastic!). Don’t think I will order another just for the additional track on the 10 inch. As for the Bill Evans, the question is, how much Bill Evans do you need 😂 I have his entire catalogue on vinyl and I did buy the first few releases from Resonance however after so many of these I feel they are becoming redundant and just taking up room on my shelves.
@andysmusicden2 жыл бұрын
I’m just like you, hesitant at first and then I buy them in the end. Do I need all of these Evans releases? Probably not, but most of them are excellent. Regarding the Sam release, I’m annoyed. I have the complete Sam catalogue, but I don’t want to buy this one again only because of the one track 10 inch. But then my collection is not complete. A bit frustrating.

...also, glad you did a video on both BE.. I don't have much confidence in Resonance, they do a great job on the inserts but is the music up to scratch? I hope so...Good to hear that RTI have done a good job... Montreux is a VERY special recording indeed (Ronnie Scots from Resonance was a joke though)

UPdate... found a seller who had both..we neg a good deal.. Resonance.. obviously not selling them direct now..and their so called "resellers" in the US , are sold out as well.. in the end I get a brand new never opened release... perhaps a cost a few dollars more..but ... everyone has to eat right..

A question slightly unrelated to the video. I live in Ireland and have recently, twice, bought records from Analogue Productions, excellent quality/ brilliant label, I paid them over 50 dollars to have the records FedExed to Dublin but two weeks later I am being hit with a VAT bill of over 40 euro. Is this normal in all European countries? Is there anyway around this? Is there a European distributor/ supplier of these records? 45 euro is a big extra to pay on every shipment from the States. Anybody got any help/tips on this? Thank you. Billy

Agree - I like to transfer them to the back of the clear outer sleeves, I store my records in. But these are VERY hard (if not impossible) to remove from the shrink - I'll try to heat them a little...

This is the thing about adiouphiles, you learn how the record sounds, but I didn't learn a damn thing about the music inside
@michaellord97452 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making that point. Would have appreciated it if Michael would have commented on the music and also audience noise, if any. Live recordings can be hit and miss that way.

The difference between photos of a guy like Bill Evans in 1950's or 1960's versus the 1970's perfectly sums up everything I don't like about the 70's. Yikes, that pink shirt.

The Bill Evans albums this year are far better than the Bill Evans Live at Ronnie Scott’s and the Bill Evans in England. I was a bit disappointed in both of those.

What do you mean by “tapes” sound on the first album ?
@N3utralMilkHot3L2 жыл бұрын
He is referring to the sound of tape hiss as this performance was originally recorded using a Revox A77. On the quiet moments it is audible. I did not find it too distracting as the overall recording quality was good.

Again and again a Bill Evans reissue from a reissue! As always "cut from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, artisanal, organic and carbon neutral". But what is the musical added value? Follow the money, but not for Bill. I have both the original LP's and CD, the sound was already very good.
@sugarbone-cage84972 жыл бұрын
The 2 Bill Evans were very expensive IMO. 52,90 Euro each disk! Maybe also worth to mention, even it is Bill Evans, ha ha🤔
