My shotokan teacher, was an 4 degree black belt, and past the red belt all our exams were made by ou national federation. It comes like this, white, yellow, orange, green, blue, red ,brown and we had 3 brown degrees. And normally it would take 2 yeard before each exame, ive made it to brown 3rd dan back to back. My sensei was a manufacturer, he even made your belt darker if you were exceptionally well in the exam.

Like my master use to say . A kick is only as good as it's contact. But only if it's not telegraphed. Your kicks didn't contact and your jumping kicks are telegraphed. Hint your squat before the kick . However doing that on purpose is a great idea you could change it up with a simple step in back kick your opponent may not see that coming .
