It works, it's hype, but as Toei showed with Wano onward, there is a ton of room for improvement. That scene is like a 6/10 and that's with mostly special effects, voice acting, and hype carrying it. If I'm in a more neutral state (i.e not a massive Isagi stan) it's like a 4. But hey this entire arc is kind of a throwaway to me. If it works.

I think the reason why there’s such a lack of animation is because of how detailed the actual drawings of the characters are the art looks amazing but that can come at a cost of less frames since it’s much harder to animated detailed character designs

kuroko no basquet was my first sport anime and was epic, damn isagi with that gol, uff really good ost in isagi moment, i love when they using the neon color in the characters ( like fire "ego")

(Long rant here sorry) The thing about Blue Lock is that there is a LOT of inner dialogue. Mostly because Isagi is a very tactical player, who relies on constantly analyzing the situation as accurately as possible, and predicting other’s movements. Even when he’s moving off the ball, his movements need to be explained to us to understand the logic behind it (bc let’s be honest, a lot of bllk fans aren’t that familiar with football). So imo even if a better studio got to animate the show, there wouldn’t be that many situations where the animation would be buttery smooth. But don’t get me wrong, I do think these last 2 episodes could’ve been animated better, and I do hope that the U20 match’ll be more fluid when the monologues are over and the movements actually happen. I just think it’s unreasonable to expect shounen type animation, when Blue Lock is all about understanding every play, tactic, and intention behind the action. For now I’m really enjoying the show as a manga reader, bc aside from the lacking animation, everything is perfect: pacing, voice acting, ost, direction, and the art style is gorgeous as well. And as I’m sure that others have commented, Isagi’s VA said they were told by the creators of the show that they’d put everything in the U-20 match, and I really don’t see why they would lie about that.

fair points. as a manga reader as well the art panel at least stay closed to the manga. the aura, movement telling and art style keep me watching this anime. like what michael had said. the story is the main factor for me to keep on watching and read bluelock. we being spoiled with good animation for the past 6 years, so i understand people want to see bluelock following that step but come on a lot of sport anime do have many powerpoint scene. it just bluelock being too hype hence many backlash but bluelock do even more than other sport anime. so it understandable. all this is my honest opinion. have a nice day everyone.

Animation wasn't as bad as episode 2, but still a lack of anything but still images with particle effects. Feels like I'm looking at an animated desktop wallpaper for about 60% of the episode. Plus there was only like 1 or 2 scenes the entire episodes of any movement that wasn't just talking that were actually animated normally instead of it being cgi. Any other non cg movement was legit like 3 frames at a time. I don't mind bad animation much as long as it's not insanely distracting, and even if there are a lot of stills, at least the artwork and particle effects still look nice. I'm nowhere near an animation elitist, but there are a ton of people that are going to drop the series bc of the animation, mostly those elitists or newer anime fans that are turned off by it. If they were saving budget for the actual U-20 match I can understand it, but imo it is not a good reason. They had an extremely successful first season that got a ton of attention, especially with the World Cup and how much attention it gave to the manga. There were a few too many overhead cg running shots, but overall a great first season. There really shouldn't have been any reason for a lack of budget or time for the movie and this season, especially since this season is shorter than the first. It all comes down to the CEOs of these animation companies being too greedy to make a quick buck I think, to the point that they feel the need to rush out the show, regardless of the drop in quality. With the recent controversy at MAPPA with JJK, it is pretty crazy that any animation company would be willing to skip quality or extra time to spit out a new season. Hopefully the actual match delivers at least, and hopefully this poor reception to the first few episodes gives them pause on rushing any more Blue Lock they animate in the future.

There are people who are doing the absolute most comparing this to Seven Deadly Sins Ragnarok. Just go and try to watch that dog water and then come back. Yes, the constant slide show thing is NOT good and some of the cgi is shaky (was shaky in season 1 too btw) BUT comparing it to SDSR? That atrocity was doo-doo in every single aspect. The quality of the drawing in it of itself is still really good but all these still frames 🤦🏿‍♂️ ... even though some of them are pretty nice to look at ... it is NOT "animation"... Exaggerating doesnt help people. I do hope that they switch it up for the U20 game. They have to. Anyway, this episode was awesome.

Hey michael, Just to give you an insight on why these past few eps feel "underwhelming" in terms of animation. 1) Studio 8bit is not a big studio with many average animators and a couple talented animators but since the employee count is quite low (around 100 as of 2024, not counting freelancers) they can't really go all out with the animation. (except for u-20 match) 2) Blue lock's production has had many issues even during season 1where you see a drastic dip in quality and drawing count in C2 and even a couple eps in C1. S1 ended in march 2023 and ep nagi was announced for april 2024. Meaning they had a solid 1 year and 1 month for episode nagi and then from april 2024 - october 2024 for season 2 which is quite bad for a small studio like studio 8bit (in comparison to lets say jjk s2, it started its production around ep 9 aired date of csm since they both share the same staff which was around nov-dec of 2023 and jjk s2 was set to release in july which is around 8-9 months and we know how bad it got even for the talented and industry veteran animators and freelancers, now imagine BL's staff bts). *Btw That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 also came out in april 2024 which shares the same team as blue lock so they had Bl s1, ep nagi, slime which is 24 eps, and now s2 in just 1 year and a couple months. 3) Isagi's japanese va confirmed that the staff bts is working super hard for the u-20 and is giving their all to make it the best experience for the fans. This statement and the production issues tell us that the team is prioritizing u-20 match over the training match so they can manage their limited time and resources and talent that they have for the main hype of this season which is literally the entire u-20 match. A lot of people don't realize these issues unless the animators themselves speak out, but in a small studio, young animators can't criticize the company openly as it could affect their careers. Despite their limitations, the team is doing their best to keep the episodes entertaining with detailed character designs, solid compositing, dynamic 3D camera work (in certain sequences), and strong direction. The U-20 match will likely be better animated than Season 1 and Episode Nagi because, for the first time, they’re showing a clear production priority due to the time crunch. I hope people understand this. Constructive criticism is great, but many are unfairly blaming the animators, who are just doing their best with the time and constraints they’re given by producers and production committees.

It's weird to me, usually when anime has 'bad animation' it bothers me a LOT. Things like Tower of God season 2. But for this I'm not that bothered at all mostly because the visuals of the PNG's itself look extremely good. Like although it's almost still images it's visually appealing, in addition to the hype OST and great voice acting. It may be bad for 'anime' current standards but this might be the perfect way to experience a Colored Manga with soundtrack and voice acting 😂
