Since there are so many new viewers and subscribers of the channel lately (THANK YOU BTW😀) I thought now would be the perfect time to re-tell the story of why I moved to Florida instead of California. Because let me tell you, life is full of surprises and I never actually thought this would be the case.
Do I regret my choice, NO I DON'T! But if you have been trying to make the decision about moving to a warmer state and California and Florida are some of the finalists, then I think you will find this story helpful and interesting.

Hi there! Great videos, very informative. I’m originally from Michigan and I’ve now been living in Los Angeles for 30 years and it sucks, like really sucks!! The crime, homelessness, cost of living, traffic, trash everywhere, rude people and the weather is not what people think. Winters are cold and rainy and summer (like now) can get really hot and dry. At the moment there’s more than one fire burning which adds to the crappy air quality. That brings up another thing- air quality in LA is gross and during the hot times of year it’s so bad you want to stay in. They will even put air quality warnings during weather report. Btw.. it does get humid here in the summer too! There’s currently a hurricane off of Mexico and that ups the humidity. You can’t go to the beach to escape it because it takes at least an hour from where I live in Hollywood to get there and to park your car it’s about $20. My husband and I are planning on moving to South Florida in the very near future for the exact reasons you live there. I can’t wait to be able to enjoy the beaches and the less stressful lifestyle you’re enjoying there. Trust us Californians and STAY THERE!! Not every place is perfect, but what it comes down to is quality of life my friend!! Sorry about the rant lol . Take care!

That is a long time to live in LA, so you definitely know and I would have to mostly agree. All those things you mentioned plague LA and it is probably much worse to deal with it on a daily basis year after year vs an occasional vacation like me. I did like staying in Hollywood last time I was there, with all the clubs on the strip, but I like music and it was fun to enjoy that for a while. But hopefully you will get to FL soon and start to enjoy the Florida lifestyle here real soon. Thanks for the story!

Oh my, you have hit a nerve. We live in CA but have decided to move to FL. We certainly have been living the life here with a houseboat in Sausalito & a little place 3 blocks from the beach in N. San Diego. It's not a money choice for us. Actually, FL has very high property taxes & car & home insurance. 1. Sausalito & Nor CA are very cold. The summer can be windy, foggy & miserable. The hot weather inland pulls the marine layer over the coast. Even San Diego has "June gloom" 2. The beaches have very cold, rough water. Even in San Diego you don't swim, you dodge waves. 3. Most of all-the homelessness in the SF Bay Area (at least) is off the charts. It is so, so sad. It's easy to have money in CA; they have stacked the deck in favor of that, but it comes at a price if you have a heart. Visit, yes, but trust the grass is not greener here.

Oh wow that is so funny! Probably walked right past your place when I took the video of the seals in the water there! I know all about the cold there in the summer too. That video was actually taken last August, and it was probably only in the mid 50's. But me being from the midwest where it regularly gets a lot colder than that, 50's are still ok for me and it is a nice break from the constant heat down here in Miami. But definitely all good points you mentioned, California certainly has its drawbacks, especially for living full time👍

Another thing I am thinking about comparing Southern California to Florida. The trees and other vegetation in SoCal have become so dry in recent years. The leaves on the trees have become so brittle, they even look and feel dry....I find it so sad. Their colors are not as vivid as they used to be. Florida looks so green and beautiful. That is one reason I would like to go to Florida....it looks so lush and healthy.
@MichaelBordenaro
@MichaelBordenaro 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I noticed that too last time I was out there. Obviously California is not known for its torrential rainfall, but I saw a documentary about the water there, and it was saying it is so dry because people are using up all of the water more than ever before, leaving hardly anything left over for nature😔 Too bad FL cannot export water to California. IMO they actually could, they build oil pipelines for thousands of miles, so why can't they do it for water?? Probably because it doesnt make $$$

@@MichaelBordenaro Our 'wonderful governor' refuses to build infrastructure that will collect more water when it does rain so much of it runs off to the ocean....even though the Federal government has offered millions to achieve this. I know this is hard to believe, but true. Also dessicants are being sprayed from the sky daily which dry up the landscape....no wonder we have so many fires now. Our politics are so screwed here, Michael, that is why so many are leaving and why so many of us tell you to NOT move here. Oh. and by the way, they are raising the taxes on water and restricting it from next year.....think of all that extra money for Sacramento....so why would they want to save any more run-off?....and God forbid they should get any water from Florida to upset their little schemes....

I lived most my life in CA but a good job opportunity will take me to Florida and we’re really looking forward to it and going with an open mind. I just hope we don’t encounter a lot of people there that place a label on us simply because we’re from CA. I’m also loyal to neither of the big political parties, but I’ve found that a lot of people in “red states” tend to be always angry and quick to place labels on newcomers. I’m hoping for a laidback vibe when we arrive and no automatic labels placed on us.

Not to mention the opportunities are just so much bigger in CA if your in tech or anything engineering. I make 20k more a year in CA then I do in FL , which makes up for the cost of living. If youre not a outdoors person, who likes mountains and hiking, then CA isnt for you. Being able to hike every weekend and then have a picnic on the beach is priceless. There's major differences between Florida and California. One of the major thing is you're gonna feel that financial impact if you're living in California. and they have the highest state tax in the country. Literally everything is expensive. I remember when I was researching before I've decided Florida, I've heard things about California. One of the things I always hear is that Californians are obsessed with their image. I mean, you gotta go there and stay there for awhile and see for yourself. Every state has it's likes and dislikes. No state is perfect.

Living in South Florida is not too shabby but my original plan was to move to California when I was in my twenties. We lived in San Diego when I was a kid but then moved back to Upstate New York where I lived until I was in my early thirties and moved permanently to South Florida. I used to buy the LA Times every weekend , planned and planned but never moved. I love South Florida and like you I have no regrets, but I have to say my heart is in Southern California. I know... I know... Everyone is leaving there and they have lots of problems. But last year we took a vacation and spent four nights in Hollywood and four nights in San Francisco. I loved it even more than I thought I would. I didn't see a lot of the negatives though I know they were there. The mountains and the architecture are incredible, and there is just a vibe in LA that you don't get anywhere else. I was in heaven but now I'm too old to move.. LOL, and let's face it, LA and California in general are MUCH more expensive than South Florida. But if I were younger and won the lottery, I think I'd live at least half the year in the LA area. I don't believe in listening to other people, it's good to do your own due diligence if you're planning on moving somewhere, but I don't listen to all the negatives. People have to experience things for themselves and I've always listened to myself and never regretted it. But yeah, my heart is in Southern California.
@MichaelBordenaro

The lesson here is definitely do your own diligence with all life decisions and see whats right for you. I am ok with only visiting California, and after spending a couple of months there, I love it too. But living here in Florida is just more practical. If you are millionaire, you can afford to live in California, but they take all your money. If you aren't then you probably can't afford it, without grinding every day just to make it. I would rather enjoy our lifestyle here in South Florida and visit California with my extra $$😉

I decided to try California in 2016 and moved out here for a job. Big mistake it's too expensive here to live. Most people can't afford to live here. Now I'm trying to decide where to move now. My late husband and I were supposed to move from Chicago to San Diego. Had the house all picked out and then he wanted to sleep on it so we went home. Next month we came down to Ft. Lauderdale and that was the death of California idea. When he died 19 years ago I should have picked up and left but I was deep in the throes of my career. Now because of the pandemic, it’s too difficult to do and the high taxes are just out of the question. What I may decide is to do is buy a condo in Southern California to use July through November and spend the rest of the time here. Btw, being from Elgin, do you remember the Milk Pail Restaurant on Dundee Road? We used to go out there on Sundays 😋
@MichaelBordenaro

San Diego is great! One of my favorite California cities. Sorry to hear about your husband...Be careful if you do buy a place in CA and plan on staying there that long. The state is very strict on how many days you can be there and possibly be subject to the state income taxes. Don't let it stop you, I think the idea is great, just know before. I don't remember the Milk Pail restaurant, but I was a kid and don't remember the names of a lot of things out there. But I do have plenty of great memories. Especially at Santa's Village, you ever been there? Was one of my favorite places as a kid, and it's still there!

Couldn't afford it once I became an adult, got married and then had a child so I moved with my ex to his home state of WI and have been stuck here for 29 yrs (I've called it my prison sentence). My ex said we would just live in WI for 6 yrs as he started a new career, but after 10 yrs I realized he had no intention of ever moving back. I divorced him (obviously) and will finally be able to move in 2022 once my last son graduates and am now looking at Florida for many reasons. I have no family left in CA, I still can't afford to live there and so many of my friends are planning to leave in the next several years. Really appreciate you sharing some insight about Florida. My wife and I are also from Illinois to be more specific...Chicago and not the suburbs of Chicago but Chicago. We started snow-birding it about four years ago. My wife is a choreographer and I am a musician. after this year in 2020 we have had like twelve weeks of three digit temps we decided to try another location. My take on Tucson AZ is the musicians here are flighty you can never nail one down long enough to get anything thing done unless your in their circle. Lastly Lake's with a capital L I fish and there are only man made puddles here unless you drive a few hours to a reservoir then pay to get in. Florida has some iconic fishing lakes that will put a smile on your face. Anyway My wife as you have said having a friend with boots on the ground can be very helpful and your as a matter of fact presentations are also helpful too. We are looking at the Palm Ocean and Saint Augustine area and maybe, just maybe I can find like minded musicians who want to play well and play out I do miss the stage for sure. Looking at pushing out of Tucson AZ at the end of October 2020. Bob

Be careful about “moving to Florida”! For a large percentage of people it’s a one-way trip into downward mobility. The wages are so low that you’ll never again afford the U-Haul to leave! And the rents in the 3 MAJOR metro areas (Miami--Ft. Lauderdale-W. Palm Beach, Orlando and Tampa Bay), are through the stratosphere! There’s a gigantic mis-match here between wages and cost-of-living. For most here it’s a paycheck-to-paycheck rat race with traffic from your worst nightmare. Almost 1000 people PER DAY are moving into Florida and it’s getting VERY crowded!

So I sold the place in September of 2016, dropped $226k of the proceeds into 2000 Apple shares (you can check to see what those shares are worth today, and I still have them) and jumped on a plane to The Philippines. I never went back. At least not yet. Lived six months of the last four years in Vietnam as well. Another country I’d encourage you to visit. Just an amazing experience. I've lived in California and Florida, as well as driving up and down the entirety of both states, so I'd say my opinion is pretty valid...California is definitely more beautiful, there's no question there, but earthquakes are unpredictable, your skin dries out there, and it's ungodly expensive. Also, want to swim in the ocean? I hope you've got a wet suit! Food is literally twice as expensive. I thought people were exaggerating, but it's actually true. You want a 1/1 apartment in San Diego? $1,500 will get you a sketchy, bare bones spot. Up in Northern California, not SF but Humboldt County (or inland So/NorCal), $1,500 will get you a decent apartment. I also really personally missed all the greenery in Florida since I'm used to it, being from the midwest. Look, if money wasn't an issue, I'd imagine most people would move to California. But the reality is, money is a problem for most people, and California isn't affordable for those who don't have an abundance of wealth. Florida, for the money especially, is an amazing place to live. Countless wildlife, greenery everywhere, palm trees, warm oceans, sandy beaches, and it's CHEAP! An apartment for $900 near the ocean? Sign me up. $900 got me a bedroom in a house with a conspiracy theorist in San Diego. I'll take an updated apartment with a 5 minute drive to the beach anyday over that, with half-priced produce t& gas to boot. Great video!

It’s like you created the perfect channel for me to watch as I prepare myself for Miami. Living in Orange County is nice and yes it’s sunny like 95% of the time but I just don’t like the arid dry heat. I’m what you call an orchid, I need humidity to thrive. It may sound crazy to sone but being a native east coaster with humid summers it’s just something I’m used to and look forward to every year especially after the brutal winters. I’ve been out here going on 3 years come June of 2021 and watching this video is making me want to swap and trade places with you and your gf with me and my bf lol 😂

@@MichaelBordenaro yes summers can be a bit brutal in Florida which is why I would try and split that time further north like back in Philly/Delaware where most of my family reside just to get a little relief. But for the most part Miami is my go to place to set roots due to its close proximity to the Caribbean islands and countries in South America I plan to visit. And of course it doesn’t hurt that the city is a melting pot of cultural diversity. ☺️

We’re going to move to Florida, and we’re retired, so we don’t have to work anymore like you do. We’ve lived in the snow belt our whole life, and we’re sick and tired of the cold and snow for over six months a year, every year. The longest we visited Florida was a month in the summer. It’s not too bad before 10 AM or after 7 PM. The longest we wanted to stay outside in the mid day was about 15 minutes. Then we had go get back to the AC in the car or inside our vacation rental or a store. We tried going to the beach mid day in the summer, and after about 15 minutes, we had to get back to the car ASAP, and crank the AC on full blast! Does it wear you down when it’s hot and humid, every day, for months, with no breaks from the heat and humid days? After several years, does your body adapt to the heat and humidity? Or, maybe you just adapt a little bit. We have the option to go back up north or travel to cooler areas in the US or internationally, to get away in the summer months, to take breaks from the relentless heat and humidity. Which three months are the worst for you? How have you adapted to the climate over the years you lived in Florida?
@MichaelBordenaro
@MichaelBordenaro 4 жыл бұрын
That is great! No more work, now it's time to enjoy. I am sure you have earned it👌I did make a video covering summer here in FL which you can check out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3zQp4enfatpf9k I would say, the only way you are going to get used to it though, is to force yourself to spend more time out in the heat. If you only spend 15 mins at a time, and then get back in the A/C you will probably never adapt. My favorite thing is going to the beach, and just jumping in the water to cool off as much as necessary. But it can get old, day in and day out with the non stop heat, and if you have the means, I would escape FL for the summer and go somewhere cooler. I would say July, August, Sepetember and October are typically the hottest and usually when we have the highest risk of hurricanes.
@daveborchard2019
@daveborchard2019 4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelBordenaro We found that in mid July and early August, it's not too bad outside in Florida before 10 AM and after about 7 PM. The almost daily thunderstorms around 4:30 PM usually cool things off for awhile. Were looking in the Suncoast area around Lakewood Ranch or in SW Florida, not south Florida. I've heard that your body does acclimate to the warmer temperatures to some degree after about two or three years. But mid day, when it's hot and humid, it's still OK for doing errands and going from the AC in the store, to AC in the car, to AC in your home. At least parts of the day in the summertime, you can do things outside in Florida. Up north, you can't do anything outside for over six months straight in the winters! That's where the term cabin fever comes from. But weren't born in Florida. You're like most other people in Florida, you came from somewhere else, usually up north. I think it would be a smart idea to have a backup air-conditioner in at least a part of your house, like a split AC in the master bedroom. You could cool down the the master bedroom a little more at night, and it would be backup AC if your central AC failed. On less hot and humid days, many the split AC would be enough on it's own. The other important thing to have is a whole house electric generator because power outages are possible for days, or maybe longer than a week after a hurricane. That's one of the problems with condo living. You can't really have a backup AC system or backup generator. You're at the mercy of the electricity not failing and your AC not failing. We rented a condo once on about the sixth floor. There was sign in the elevator that advised to not take the elevator during storms, in case there was a power outage. I was amazed that there isn't a law requiring all condo buildings over a certain height to have backup power on their elevators. I think having a remote car starter might help with those errands in the middle of the day to cool down the car, while walking to the car from the stores. An afternoon nap is another thing you can do in the hottest part of the day.

Dave Borchard from June to August, it’s horrifyingly hot... but once those months are over, the weather is amazing. It’s just like in the North, it has its peak season in the winter where it’s unbearable. But after that, the weather is great. I’m from Miami, born and raised, and have worked in the roofing industry... so I know a thing or two about the heat here. Hope this helps, if you come here, I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay here 😊
@daveborchard2019
@daveborchard2019 4 жыл бұрын
Javier Dexter Florian I’ve replaced a couple roofs in my younger days, and that’s tough work! That was in the old days, when all the roofing bundles needed to be carried on your shoulder up the ladder to the roof. It would be much tougher in Florida’s blasting sunshine, heat, and humidity. The longest we visited in the summer was a month from late July into August. We could still get out and do things in the mornings before 10 AM, or after 7 PM. But mid day, we could only drive around in the AC and do errands to the stores, where we were just walking between the car and the stores or the car and the vacation rental condo. But in Minnesota, in the winters, we’re stuck inside for over six months. It’s the same thing going from the heated car to the heated stores. But it cold, snowy and nasty 24 x 7 for over six straight months. I think less than 5% of the population in Minnesota actually like winters and winter activities, the vast majority of the population put up with the winters, and are very happy when the winters are over. But the winters begin again in less than six months. Only a few months of decent weather. Some of those decent weather months are chocked with very aggressive and large mosquitoes! So, we plan to go back up north or do traveling during the hottest summer months in Florida to get away from the hottest weather. That way we can have the best weather, and not have to suffer anymore in the cold, ice, and snow.

Hey Michael glad i came across your channel. It's been helpful. I like getting a perspective from someone actually living there and not from a realtor or other professional of the sort. I've lived in CA for my entire life and have lived from one end of the state to the other. Beaches, Mountains, Central Valley, Deserts, and Temperate Rain Forest. CA is a beautiful landscape, but as some have already pointed out the expense and politics have become a major issue for most. I'm actually planning on moving to Florida's west coast and hope that i enjoy it. I'm kind of planning on doing the part time thing there as you have mentioned. I'm a wildlife biologist / botanist and do consulting work so traveling is usually the norm for me in the spring and summer months. So i'm hoping to be there during the favorable weather months lol. Question, have you spent much time on the West Coast of Florida and have you done any vids regarding that. I've just started viewing your channel and have't had much time to peruse your back vids yet. Any info would be helpful and that goes for anyone else on this board. Thanks

Hi Yancey, I am glad you came across it too! I am actually a realtor here, which you will find out once you watch more of my videos, but it is not the focus of channel or the videos and this channel is not intended to promote that. Anyways, yes many others here have mentioned California's issues, and if you can do the back and forth and appreciate both, I truly think that is also the best way to go. I do plan on doing more and more videos across Florida, but since the whole shut down thing, it really hasn't been possible. So the only video I really have about the west coast right now is this one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWXImZttgsyej5I. Can you do a video talking about CDDs? Sounds like a huge turn off to living in certain areas of Florida, such as St Augustine. Is it included in your mortgage amount? Seems like if you get a mortgage for X for a house, your mortgage can actually be X + an insane amount of tens of thousands of dollars for the CDD. If you could talk about this that would be great. Thanks.

That sounds like a very niche topic, and I'm not sure most people would even know what I'm talking about. But, it is a fee that gets incorporated into your annual tax bill, so you should know how much it is ahead of time, without being surprised. Just need to find out how much the current owner is paying in taxes each year, and I would even request a copy of the annual tax bill when buying the house if it is a concern. If they are a good seller, they will give a copy😉

Awesome! I don't think there is a perfect match in FL to match the small town vibe like CA, but you can get pretty close in St Augustine, Melbourne and Space Coast area, maybe even clearwater, or st pete, but little more touristy over there. What about the financial benefits of being married or do you find it more advantageous to not be married on paper? What do you think about living in Cali now with the drought, fires, power outages, extreme heat and severe weather that has been hitting there as of late?

Love the videos! From Elgin IL, work with people from your home town. We are looking to move south in 4-5 years. A lot of time to decide between Texas and Florida. Do you think you’ll ever do a video on the beaches in Destin? Have you ever been to the beach in Fort Desoto? Thanks again!

What a small world huh? I was actually born in Elgin IL, Sherman Hospital 👌 Definitely come down and visit TX and FL before deciding. I do plan on making a trip to Destin and doing some videos there. Have heard a lot of good things about the area. Never been to Ft Desoto though.

Michael Bordenaro, awesome thanks! Will keep watching. And yes I was born at Sherman as well! Well the “old” Sherman, is no more and is medical offices, has been used in a few movies “contagion” is the most notable I believe, and most recently was turned into a COVID overflow hospital that was never actually used thankfully, new Sherman is built on other side of town. More info then you were probably interested in probably! Haha! In-laws are in West Palm area so have been there a few times, but thankful for your channel and the info!

@@serodriguez1990 Very cool! I have not been over that way in years, and wouldn't even be able to find the old hospital LOL, but appreciate the update. Glad you are liking the channel 😊
