We didn't have safe effective retail until Wal-Mart showed up where I am so no, don't believe it. Now we have 21st Century retail with an overwhelmingly not young so much population and a young population that was not being served at all...plus out here on the Islands where you need tools and motor oil and what not for keeping up equipment or just new equipment...none of this was possible or happening until Wal-Mart came alone creating an economic boom here actually. Doing better now than ever in point of fact. Trying to think of ahem *"mom and pop retail in Florida"* ahem...can you name even one? They do not treat their employees well. Not many employees work full time meaning they receive NO benefits. They slowly replace people with checkout yourself, bag it yourself cash register units. Then they want to CHECK your bags after you go through the checkout lines. Instead, why not hire another cashier rather than having an invasive person demanding to check your bags like we're stealing your cheap Chinese stuff? Let's not mention the invasive cameras...

I know this because my sister is on both, but needs to find a part time job or she'll use up all the money in the trust my mom left for her. We have a pretty high minimum wage, so she can only work 20hrs/wk or she'll lose her benefits. If she went to work full time, she'd lose the benefits, but still not make enough to pay her bills. People of a certain political persuasion want people off "welfare", but the system is set up so that you can't get assistance if you work a job that doesn't make enough for you to live off.

Walmart is disgusting!! If one studies supply chains, when you put all of your eggs in one basket you remove the competitive advantages of having multiple suppliers competing for your business. Also, if the Walmart store gets destroyed you are screwed. People are depressed because they don’t mingle with their neighbors, and have nowhere to go. Everyone is staring at their phones and tv’s and wonder why they are depressed. Get out of the house and shop locally. If you let them die you will regret it. I’m lucky to remember the good times when you saw friends and met people while you go out and shop.

For Walmart stores that are also doing the grocery stores, I've found that their prices are actually worse than the grocery chains. They have no sales on items that I've seen, and are priced either the same or more than the items I get at my Publix store here in Florida. While I was on vacation in Virginia, I stopped at Walmart in Fredericksburg, and it was the same situation there.

I have to say you're right, sadly. Having a few things, a good small home, and doing the upkeep to keep it clean and maintain things used to be the mark of a good life. But people despise that life so much, they would rather ruin everything they have, always trying to get more, just to avoid staying at that routine. There will ALWAYS be so many deals we miss out on, we will ALWAYS have moments where we didn't get the best possible value, and there will ALWAYS be times when it's better for us to just leave an establishment instead of staying and complaining. It will always happen because it has to, yet people can't stand it because it gets in the way of their impossible "more more more" flow. More value, better treatment, more deals. Even if that lifestyle were possible, you'd need people to maintain all that stuff you've acquired, and it's not good for the community. Who cares about the community? No one, that's why million dollar homes are surrounded by squaller and bedlam. Suddenly, it's abandoned because of no community infrastructure. ...When I go outside, I think of myself AND the community, usually the workers that make it all possible. I stopped looking for the best deals, having fomo, or desiring exclusivity. Since doing so, I've spotted a few people like me who adjusted their priorities; Either they didn't get caught by the consumerist demon you see 80% of the public plagued by, or they just knew better earlier on than I did. These are the connections I want. This is a better way to live. And finding actual people you can trust in this world instead of possessions you can't always trust, is why.

Problem is a bit more complex then this video shows. It started back in the 80's with Reagan going back to 1929 failed tax code that allows money to rise to the top exponentially. Also relaxing anti trust to the point they don't hardly enforce. This all led to monopolies and oligopolies with 100 percent motivation to line the bottom line to increase CEO bonuses as the old code allows for super normal amounts of wealth accumulation for individuals and corporations. Supreme courts citizens untied decision made corruption in politics legal. End result vulger capitalism at its finest. The older tax code allowed for a MUCH stronger middle class. Just look at Australia for one example of this. Also being the only industrialized country on earth with a for profit health allows as to pay the most and we ain't even in the top 40 for outcomes.

We're lucky to still have some choices around here. Yes there's 3 WalMarts in the area but there's also a Meijer. We have a small chain supermarket here called Woodman's (in Wisconsin and Illinois) that has huge stores with decent prices and excellent selection. Aldi's has several stores around, and up in the smaller towns in the north woods there is a consortium of independent grocers ("Hometown Grocers") that by banding together can fight off the WalMart Effect. This area has a bunch of smaller stores, especially ethnic ones like Mexican, Korean, Indian, Asian, etc. There's natural foods stores, local butchers, you name it. A little research to find what you want goes a long way. It is easier just to pull into the parking lot of wally world, yes but I'd rather spend my money in the local economy when I can. I own a Tesla Model X since 2016 and I'm never going back to gas cars. Unlike in Sweden where there aren't enough supercharging stations, I live in Southern California where there are literally a Tesla Supercharging Station with at least 10 stalls every 5 miles. I have free supercharging (early adopter privilege) so I saved $50,000 on gas since I got my Tesla 8 years ago - that's enough to buy a Mercedes! No pay for gas, no oil change, no radiator flush, no smog check - no nothing! So, I don't know what he's talking about. And I am about to drop that $50k on a 2023 Mercedes EQS EV that cost twice that amount just a year ago when it was brand new. So, keep badmouthing EVs so I can buy more at at 50% off!
@blackworldtraveler371113 күн бұрын
See Teslas everywhere in Oklahoma where I live. Many hybrids. I have just been a Tesla shareholder since they were close to bankruptcy years ago. Not really a car person and more point A to B type of guy so my 2012 gas subcompact is fine. Also have second home where I don’t need a car and out of country months at a time. Retired 20 years early in 2020. Drive enough to fill tank twice a year and self insure. Change oil every three years. Total cost each year is around $600-$800. My neighbor has a powder blue cyber truck. Weird looking thing.
@gunkulator113 күн бұрын
Yup, a lot of strange hate targeted at EVs for some reason. Meanwhile in places like Sweden, 60% of their cars are already electric and it's only getting higher. The majority of cars sold in China are electric. The same trend is happening worldwide. Also, I'll take an occasional burning car battery to oil and gas spills and fires that have ruined some ecosystems for decades.
@andyhughes177613 күн бұрын
And oh BTW, this just in: The new Tesla Model Y Juniper was just released in China not even in the US yet, but it already has 50,000 orders in one day! The Model Y is THE MOST SOLD cars (including gas cars) in 2023 at 1.2 million units worldwide. The only people who hate Tesla's are the ones who've never driven one because it's not in their budget range (or they are too cheap to spend that much). And ones who got smoked by a Tesla on the road. It is simply ILLOGICAL not to choose a Tesla if you are in a market for a comparably priced car.
@chapman156913 күн бұрын
Electric cars are more expensive when you buy them but cheaper to use after that. It is almost like the price of energy is factored in when you buy them new. Imagine if we did that for gaz vehicles, you would pay a large amount for the gazoline you would consume in the 10-15 years when you buy it. But buying an electric vehicle has a cost that people dont like to think about, it is battery degradation and replacement. Also, Tesla's for example cost a lot in insurance. We chose a PHEV and we wont replace the battery in our PHEV, we will get a regular hybrid.
@andyhughes177613 күн бұрын
@chapman1569 True that EV's cost higher than a comparable gas cars INITIALLY. Concerning the battery, recent REAL-WORLD data showed that an EV battery lasts at least 400,000 miles. How many gas cars last that long? Because EV's lasts many times longer than a gas car, you can keep an EV longer thereby in the long run, it costs you less. In my case, I bought my Tesla Model X in 2016 for $100k. I pay for no gas in 8 years and saved $50k. So in reality, my Tesla only costs me $50k (that's the average price of a car today!) And I intend to drive it for another 10 years, which saves me even more money.

Capitalism is not just about making the "cheapest products for the best price" or "making the most money." It's fundamentally about private ownership, voluntary exchange, and the idea that prices and production are shaped by competition and consumer demand in the market.

It was creating long lines and became a nuisance, and Walmart didn't honor the limit either, so people had three or four carts full of the same item's emptying them out, and it took forever for that item to get ordered and put back on the shelf covid-19 would of stopped that eventually if it was still continuing that was really a nuisance.

Don’t have that where I live. Just regular middle class families,single parents,DINKs,FIRE, and retired people with pensions and whatnot. Only thing to be aware of is that people will practically empty the grocery store when there’s a winter storm coming.

I think many of you Americans tie too much hope to this next administration. Whenever has a new administration helped average people to feel less pain? If they do, it's just temporarily. The pain always comes back.

Walmart is by far the best price on almost everything as far as groceries. I have money! My choices are the fresh market. Whole Foods. Target. Publix (like every half mile lmao) Sprouts. So that’s about it! Walmart it is. If shop rite or something like that came down here I could adjust. I don’t buy produce at Walmart, their produce is trash.

"Big things start small". If you compare Bezos from back in the 90's to now, he's a completely different person. He lost all his hair, started going to the gym and lifting. Now he looks like Lex Luthor.

Switched from petrol to diesel thirty years ago and don't want to get back. Sure, the initial cash price was almost 2k euros higher, but it has twice as much torque as the same model with petrol, and the tank lasts more than a thousand kilometers.

At least Walmart still sells stuff at reasonable prices (unlike Amazon).
