Our church has a mixture of 3 way speakers in the balcony and 2 way speakers on the main level, which I believe causes major sound differences between the 2 levels. Are there ways to compensate for this with a system processor or another method?

Hi Michael Where would you position the FOH, center or off center? I heard that in the center, one gets phasing issues. Thanks

My favorite Tom mic (floor or rack) is a 421. I haven’t had a chance to use them in a while, though, and that Heil is definitely on my list of mics to try. Normally I use a D4.

@@MichaelCurtisAudio The best tom sound I’ve ever heard was a gig where another engineer was using the PA a friend of mine and I owned, and he brought 421s for his tom mics. IIRC, that was the _only_ thing used that wasn’t ours, and my friend and I were both blown away by how much better he made our gear sound than either of us could (and most of the band was musicians we’d worked with extensively, so that wasn’t the issue). Now, I consider myself to be a “fairly good, but not great” engineer, and I think my friend does a better job than I do. Freakin’ Tim Kimsey, though… that guy’s a _great_ engineer. It wasn’t just that he knew the 421s were a good match for those toms, it was _everything_ about his approach. I don’t know what he’s up to these days, but if you’re ever in Dallas and get a chance to hear him work, take it.

Super late- But when it comes to your individual channels, are you panning? Ie. toms, guitars? Would also love to know what type of main bus compression you're using
@MichaelCurtisAudio
@MichaelCurtisAudio Жыл бұрын
Usually not much panning at all since the majority of the PA's I'm running there's very little overlap between left and right. FX returns and stereo sources still stay "stereo", but I don't pan out individual elements. As far as bus compression, I'm not too picky in a live setting. In the studio I love the Vertigo VSC-2 from Brainworx. It's a very, very nice sounding VCA comp.

@@MichaelCurtisAudio I appreciate the response!! I take a similar approach as you laid out, with using an x32 (at a church) for system processing and sending my Main LR to a Stereo Matrix at unity. However I do pan things like toms and guitar, not super wide tho! The church I’m at has k12s and 118s. The church is not too wide but has a lil bit of depth, the K12s are flown on each side. Would you suggest keeping this a stereo matrix with panning OR going mono? I do not have any front fills. Thanks man!
@MichaelCurtisAudio
@MichaelCurtisAudio Жыл бұрын
@@jjax633 I'd say you could get away with a little bit of panning if you've got some overlap between your mains speakers.

If not using mono Mix for subs then route that mix to a matrix, how do I separate which inputs going to subs and tops? Would it be ok if I put kick and bass on a subgroup instead of a Mix buss then route the subgroup to a mono Matrix? Using A&H SQ7. Thanks
@MichaelCurtisAudio
@MichaelCurtisAudio 2 жыл бұрын
That's one way to solve that problem, for sure, but I personally don't think it's a problem worth solving : ). I'm not sure if you've seen my other video on why I don't use aux fed subs, but I always do a mono downmix of my LR to a mono matrix, then send that to subs. That way I'm not deciding on the fly "should I send more or less kick to subs", I'm tuning the system to a target tonality that I trust, then using EQ and overall level of the source to create the impact I want. Here's that video I mentioned - kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2iZhaahoteabK8

Thanks Michael, Could you please do a video on setting gain structures for the PA, especially on amp or powered speakers sensitivity. It's been confusing the hell out of me as there's huge differences on opinions how to set the sensitivity knob on the back of subs. Even the manufacturer are confusing us by saying different things on the manual compared to their online webinars. I'm using RCF 8006 subs but keep getting debates with colleagues on where to set the sensitivity knob at every show. I like it at 12 o'clock as the manual says that is optimal level of +4dbU inputs but others say 3 o'clock and some say leave it at max level. Seriously... Sensitivity has been bugging me for such a long time 😔

Hi Michael, is there a way hat we can EQ and Delay Main L and R separately independent from each others in M32 / X32 Consoles? Condition is, Main LR cant be sent as Mono Signals to Matrizes. I. e. as an Example if i pan my first Tom to Hard right, it should come only out of Main R but still i should be able to EQ Main L and R individually. Thanks in Advance
