I was stationed in The Netherlands in the US Army at a small NATO base called AFCENT Brunssum, NL (limburg) province from 1968-70. Very southern part of the country. The best time of my life. The people was so nice. Very clean. I was a driver and got to drive all over Belgium and Germany. Many could speak English mostly the younger generation. Gosh loved the french fries (fritz) with mayonnaise, bahmi, nasi goreng, fricadel special with ketchup and onions, mackle with onions and cheeses. And many more. I did get married to a gal from Grevenbicht. The only thing I didn't like was the weather. Rained a lot. I was very lucky not to go to Viet Nam and I say I had a European vacation. Traveled all over Europe even took my car on the ferry boat to England and learned to drive on the left. HA. My father-in-law was in the Dutch Army and was POW for 4 yrs. Just loved being there. Even saw the Queen at the Maargratan American cemetery in 1969 for the 25 years after WW2. Lot of great times.

Wow, great experience. I don't expect that Indonesian foods have rooted on the Dutch cuisine for a long time. Probably brought by Indo people leaving Indonesia in 1957 - 58. Bahmi? What's that? A kind of noodle? Maybe it's bakmi. Here in Jakarta, you can find bakmi (and nasi goreng) in almost every single street, either on the street vendor or restaurant.

Ozgol Debron bami is how the Dutch call Baki, although it’s not exactly the same. Before the second world war you could also buy it in the Netherlands, but it became a popular dish because of all the Molukkers coming form Indonesia to the Netherlands after WW2.

Yeah it must have been nice there back in the late 60s... no Vietnam War, no riots in the streets , no assassinations.. looks like it was a really great place to be back in the day . And it does look really clean... must have been great for you .

Michael: As I watched this I couldn't help but notice in the classroom scenes, all the children were actually Dutch. I've been to Holland (cousin works for Shell, lives in Delft) and the mix today is very different. At the risk of offense, do you think the heavy influx of Muslim immigrants since this time has had a positive or negative influence on your home country?

+MichaelRogge I live in Texas and our Southern border with Mexico has been under siege for decades. We now have between 11 and 30 million illegal immigrants running around here with our President pushing and pushing for more to cross over. The net effect has been tremendous. I wish I could tell you it was positive. All the best!

+Chris Reed You are an illegal immigrant yourself, did the natives welcome your ancestors with open arms or did they just stole the land of the natives?
@fullthrottlealways
@fullthrottlealways 8 жыл бұрын
+Mirko H. My ancestors were largely settlers not illegal immigrants. Settlers and immigrants differ fundamentally. Settlers leave an existing society, usually in a group, in order to create a new community in a new and often distant territory. They are imbued with a sense of collective purpose. Implicitly or explicitly they subscribe to a compact or charter that defines the basis of the community they create and their collective relation to their mother country. The latest wave of illegals in my state are the underclass of Mexico, largely the least skilled, with no real plan or collective purpose. I live here, I see my culture under seize and so does Mr. Rogge in his country (read his words closely), he's just too polite to mention it openly.

+Chris Reed Current mix of city people in Holland is very different than just a few decades ago. We are facing attacks on our liberties and our well being as a nation is suffering. The first wave of immigrants from Muslim countries were at the begininning detached from their old, poor and islam dominated countries. They came to work and seemed to integrate fairly well. But socialist policies offered immigrants the opportunity to invite all other family members, religious leaders et cetera. Generous welfare and disability insurance clogged up the system. Multiculturalism was still the norm. People were encouraged to keep their traditions and religion. Now we face huge integration problems, islam is very dominant and a non forgiven and destructive force (women rights, gay rights are not respected, and never will). It tore up the whole country. As much as Christianity is hated in Holland this much is islam loved by mainly left wing parties. Crime rates and unemployment under 4th generation Muslims are a disaster.
