The complete rebuilding of central Rotterdam after WW2 facilitated the construction of an extensive 9-route street-level light rail/tram network. (The city also has bus lines and a 5-route metro linked to the Hague, all with integrated ticketing.) There is some street running in the suburbs, but the central area has segregated light rail lines, many are grassed. Intersections with cars and pedestrians are treated as level-crossings, with black and white marker poles, yellow flashing lights and bells.
The trams are a 5-section, 100% low-floor, single-ended version of Alstom Citadis from 2002 and 2012. The system is 1,435mm standard gauge with 600vDC overhead electrification
