I cannot overstate how useful this is to me. I've been playing piano and keyboards for half a lifetime, but never been able to improvise....what you've covered here isn't technically difficult and it's so obvious but people like me need to be told it....and then it seems so simple lol Thank you

There’s something about the way you talk, your thought process, your unpretentious glasses, your basic t-shirt, and the sound of your piano that makes you irresistibly sassy or elegant. The whole experience is captivating, like watching Michael Keaton break down how to portray Batman.

“Stop Playing Triads”grabbed my attention. It’s exactly what I needed. Thx for the teaching technique. I know there are others out there like me. Struggled to assemble these beautiful chords by watching others and just not getting that sound. I would even try to use intervals to assemble them but very clunky.

As an octogenarian pianist who was “note on the page dependent” after twelve years of classical instruction, then gradually moving into jazz voicings, improvising from lead sheets, more complicated progressions and altered chords, I love the insights various people on the internet Barry Harris et. al. make available. They lead to the “why didn’t I think of that” reactions. I stumbled across yours a little while ago and am happy and grateful that I did. Even at the basic level like in this lesson there are little things that can so easily turn into ahah moments. I love your laid back and innovative style. Thanks so much.

Just wanted to say thanks. This is such a good approachable way for me to learn. I'm a guitarist primarily, so the concept of licks resonates. The piano can seem daunting because there are so many degrees of freedom. But your way of doing it constrains it to extremely useful techniques such as left hand primarily doing 1/5 and kind of riffing with right hand to "fill out" the chord. And BTW your choices of chord voicings are just tear-jerkingly beautiful. You've reduced the problem to a manageable size making me think I could do this....

Man I needed this. I've heard people talking about this before but you have such a great way of explaining the logic behind the choices you make. The voicing examples are very useful for someone who's not so sure of what they should be playing or what they're hearing on a song. It's also great that you were able to give us a sensible way to actually practice it and didn't just say "look for what sounds good". Some teachers can't really decode more "fluid" concepts like this into practice examples. Also, the on-screen graphics are so good, I really liked how you managed to display where the notes you're playing fall in the subdivision grid. This channel is pure gold!

This lesson was aimed right at my ability level. I am finding that learning the piano is helping my guitar playing and my song composition. I am finding that on piano, the songs I’ve written on guitar are seen from a different angle and it opens up other directions possible for said guitar song. On piano it is significantly easier to produce notes and chords than on a string instrument…but that just allows the complexity to emerge elsewhere! Thanks mate!

This is a fantastic breakdown, thank you so much! I am one of those people with knowledge on the fundamentals like you mentioned at the start, but struggle to make things sound more lush and fluid. Different ways of thinking on how to bring color and motion to playing is something I struggled with and now I have lots to practice on.

@@michaelkeithson Absolutely! It's helped a lot bringing a lot more brightness and color to my playing. It also explains why I always had more fun with basic minor chords: they have the tension built into them. You gotta work at it a bit more with the major chords to make them interesting :)

As long as Michael posts videos I’ll keep watching them. Learned more about applying music theory in the last few days of binge watching these than 14 years of classical lessons. Would love to see your process to go from a basic lead sheet into a full arrangement applying these concepts!

This is by FAR the best music video I've seen on youtube, and Ive watched thousands. This is all I want to do - i just want to play like this. I don't have the intelligence to learn the piano inside out, I just want to noodle about and create beautiful music like this. I couldn't hit the subscribe button fast enough!

I have been playing the piano over 25 days and its fun! Actually been playing for 3 months now and loving it. I have been playing guitar for 27 years along with bass, drums and mandolin for several. At least I know what I am doing when it comes to theory which has been helpful. Playing around with lots of chord shapes, getting into extensions and so forth as well as what you described in terms of putting the basic bass notes in with my left hand and attempting a melody within the key with the right hand. Based on your video I know I am on the right track 😁. A big takeaway for me is to start adding intervals. I will start to add that in, thanks!

Excellent tutor for beginners and improvers who want to explore harmonically interesting music. There are many other super KZbin videos for piano, but none explain things this clearly. For more advanced tutorials, I recommend the Mangold Project and Kent Hewitt, but there are many others. It's largely about what works better for you.
