I cannot overstate how useful this is to me. I've been playing piano and keyboards for half a lifetime, but never been able to improvise....what you've covered here isn't technically difficult and it's so obvious but people like me need to be told it....and then it seems so simple lol Thank you

As an octogenarian pianist who was “note on the page dependent” after twelve years of classical instruction, then gradually moving into jazz voicings, improvising from lead sheets, more complicated progressions and altered chords, I love the insights various people on the internet Barry Harris et. al. make available. They lead to the “why didn’t I think of that” reactions. I stumbled across yours a little while ago and am happy and grateful that I did. Even at the basic level like in this lesson there are little things that can so easily turn into ahah moments. I love your laid back and innovative style. Thanks so much.

Just wanted to say thanks. This is such a good approachable way for me to learn. I'm a guitarist primarily, so the concept of licks resonates. The piano can seem daunting because there are so many degrees of freedom. But your way of doing it constrains it to extremely useful techniques such as left hand primarily doing 1/5 and kind of riffing with right hand to "fill out" the chord. And BTW your choices of chord voicings are just tear-jerkingly beautiful. You've reduced the problem to a manageable size making me think I could do this....

Man I needed this. I've heard people talking about this before but you have such a great way of explaining the logic behind the choices you make. The voicing examples are very useful for someone who's not so sure of what they should be playing or what they're hearing on a song. It's also great that you were able to give us a sensible way to actually practice it and didn't just say "look for what sounds good". Some teachers can't really decode more "fluid" concepts like this into practice examples. Also, the on-screen graphics are so good, I really liked how you managed to display where the notes you're playing fall in the subdivision grid. This channel is pure gold!

This lesson was aimed right at my ability level. I am finding that learning the piano is helping my guitar playing and my song composition. I am finding that on piano, the songs I’ve written on guitar are seen from a different angle and it opens up other directions possible for said guitar song. On piano it is significantly easier to produce notes and chords than on a string instrument…but that just allows the complexity to emerge elsewhere! Thanks mate!

Awesome piano class! It's a video to watch over and over again and learn every single tip. By the way, your accent is so nice and clear to listening to. Most of all, you go straight to the point without beating around the bush! Thanks for posting. Greetings from Brazil.

Excellent tutor for beginners and improvers who want to explore harmonically interesting music. There are many other super KZbin videos for piano, but none explain things this clearly. For more advanced tutorials, I recommend the Mangold Project and Kent Hewitt, but there are many others. It's largely about what works better for you.
