Conservative croatian catholic here. The Smiths were an unusual pop band in the 80s. Their songs referred to a lost, emotional and love-seeking youth trying to find their way in the world. When you're seventeen, it's easy to identify with Morrissey and Maar's lyrics full of mild irony and nostalgia. Although they rebel against all authority, including the Church, there's something of St. Augustine in their search for meaning. Morrissey sings: " "There's a club if you'd like to go You could meet somebody who really loves you So you go and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home and you cry And you want to die." Pope Benedict XVI said: "Noisy expressions of joy are often a mask behind which despair is hidden. Nowhere can a young man be so alone as surrounded by a crowd of people." A decade later, they still inspire. They are definitely worth listening to.

How could you have never heard "Panic"?! I grad high school in '82, voted Reagan in '84, LOTS of punk and new wave-type music of that era was libertarian/conservative at its core. Hell, the late 70's Sex Pistols had "Bodies", an explicitly anti-abortion song. Oingo Boingo mocked liberals' love of rehabilitative justice with their song "Only a Lad". There were a lot of other examples, there was nothing particularly leftist at all about the Smiths and Morrissey has been canceled for expressing pro-Britain First views.

It's his voice and style of singing pretty much. it's lovely, ethereal, and unique. And I think I remember their lyrics being good, I guess. I found them coming and rather enjoyable to listen to enjoyable to listen to, but mostly because of his voice. And, you are right, they do grow on you

"How soon is now" is the song that made me aware of the Smith's years ago. A song that stands the test of time better with it's guitar riff and melody etc..compared to this song you've played Michael. Used to love them before they became popular! They were one of the punk groups that were dark and depressive and realisitc. It was great when you were a teenager rebeling against society and authority trying to make you conform!

Love The Smiths. Morrissey's lyrics are hilarious. You should try "Girlfriend in a Coma".
