You have a good heart. Although just a friendly tip. When you released those fish back to ice cold pond they very likely shocked to death. Next time remember to do at least 10min acclimation. Other aquarium fish requires much more longer acclimation but Minnows should be tougher. Just put the jar in the pond, wait for 10min, and then release them.

Thank you very much! It took me about 30 minutes to ride with those fish from Roosevelt island (where I live) to the Central park. And than time to start the video...that's more than enough time for water temperature to drop down in the jar to the water temperature in the pond. The fish should be fine.

Those look like bluntnose minnows. They are characterized by the stripe running down their body, and a short blunt nose and face. I have some too! I just caught them from a pond yesterday, and have them in an aquarium like that too, only I am trying out putting mud from the creek in with the aquarium instead. There are so many creature! I found dozens, and lots of scuds, worms, and other things! So much fun to watch. Yours are huge though. They look like they are 2-2.5 inches. Mine are a little under and inch for the biggest ones. I have lots of fry. It was probably spawning season. 😮

Little story: I started a terrarium about march 2022. Had worms, isopods, spiders, centipedes, etc. I left it to be for a while, had a small pond in the middle some rocks and some dirt hills. Everything was happy seeming and chilling so I just left it alone and looked at for about 10mins once a week probably. Almost 2 months ago I bought a fish net, caught some bull minnows I was gonna use as bait but decided to throw a few into the little water I had in my tank, and I never paid any attention to it until about 2 weeks ago I seen one swimming around. After 6 weeks I finally seen a survivor, so I dug the little pond all the way down and made it a little wider, added a rock bridge for the bugs and he’s been chilling eating cheerios or dog food every now and then. Craziest part is he went from a saltwater fish to a completely still pond inside a enclosed tank. And for the first 6 weeks when I didn’t see him, he was in pitch black the whole time. All I do is crush a cheerio or something once a couple days and refill my water dripper. I made a cardboard top, cut a hole small enough that the cap of a water bottle could fit through, so I cut a couple small tiny holes into the cap so it’ll drip, adding oxygen to the tank. Plain dirt bottom, nothing fancy at all. So I know I can leave him in there for days without care and he’ll be fine bc he’s use to a tough environment. I want to make videos but I can never seem to get good footage of what I’m tryna showcase

Hello Marktuyet! This minnows have no choice but to like moving water :) They do like moving water even though the pond mostly has still water. In previous videos about this pond I have showed a couple places they love to hang out through the year warm time. The young fish prefer very shallow sunny spots on steps where the ramp was shown at Winter. Adult fish like to hang out by the water input pipe. Schools of minnows can be seen in those two spots all the time.

I know you mean well, but it’s frowned upon to rerelease wild animals that have been kept captive and exposed to other fish/plants/environments due to the possible transition of parasites, disease and unwanted hitchhikers. In my state it is against the law to do this, or to even introduce water from one wild body of water into another wild body of water. I know this is a manmade pond in the middle of New York City, but as you noted, it drains into the river and is by no means isolated from other bodies of water.
@4me3 жыл бұрын
I know you mean well too. Societies come up with rules to fit whatever needs and societies change the rules as new needs arise. Curiosity feed our need for knowledge persistently regardless of rules. And rules we change by actions. I see no justification in letting fish die or any living creature die for that matter. I help when I can the way I can. I see an opportunity to learn - I learn. And I share about things I learn. Sharing is caring. Walking away silently is...it's not for me.

I don't believe these are creek chubs, they look more like a fathead minnow, but I would put them in a larger tank regardless. If you do, a bare minimum for the 6 fish would be a 10 gallon, but a 20 gallon would make them feel much more comfortable, and you could add many plants and make it look very pretty. You also would have the option of adding bottomfeeders/algae eaters (e.g. corydoras or otocinclus). I have kept fathead minnows before, and if you need more care for them, they are the same as the rosy red feeder minnows you would find in a pet store. The wild variation just doesn't have the albino color. They like a pump, as well, for circulation. So in all, you will need a 20-gallon tank, a water pump, a really good filter, a lot of plants, and some good quality food to keep these guys happy (they also breed very easily in this environment!). They will eat duckweed, but they also release a lot of waste, so stem plants like the elodea or the hornwort will suit them very well, as they will not nip at those as readily, especially the elodea, as it has wider leaves. Because they won't nip at wider leaves, stem plants like ludwigia and moneywort will also work very well. I hope that this helps with the basic care for these guys!

Wouldn't the chlorine in the ponds dissipate if it's just tap water and they are not actually continuously adding chlorine?
@4me3 жыл бұрын
It take up to 24 hours for chlorine to evaporate from open water surface. However, in this example you may see the water in the puddle gets constantly refilled from the pipe. It makes fish swim in literally the same tap water that runs from facets on kitchens of all New York city - chlorinated water. I use the same tap water (after at least overnight sit in open jar to let chlorine to evaporate) for refilling my aquariums. So, the water I use is basically chlorine free.

@4me2 жыл бұрын
@@BigBrodie710 I judge about water quality, plants/critters/fish health and everything else in my aquariums based on observations made through periods of time (daily/ weekly/ monthly/ annually). Back to oxygen - normally level of oxygen in aquariums fluctuate through day/night cycle. At night plants consume oxygen dissolved in water. Though, my fish is less active at night and therefore need less oxygen (stands true for many other living organisms including people). You can count how often fish breath by watching the movements of gills. That is daily observation. Also, too many fish in the same aquarium will deplete oxygen. That brings as to the monthly/ annual observation - fish (as any other living organisms except human) breed only when all proper parameters are met. Such as food available, temperature, space and etc. including oxygen level. Fish does not breed if there is too much or not enough oxygen available. So, if your fish breed - than all parameters in your aquarium are acceptable, and it includes the oxygen level. All the best on your adventure!

Any idea of how many are ok per gallon? I have a 1,600 gallon pond with its say 50+ minnows I caught at all old creek to release there. It's been getting below freezing lately and fear I didn't dig center deep enough. Found 3 large ones dead. Ado took them in for winter. I have a 20 gallon tank with probably 30 in with an air pump and trapdoor snails. How many's a safe/good#? Thanks!

Thank you for the question! I would measure the length of the fish (average). And than multiply it by 3 and multiply by 3 again. Than multiply the result by number of fish. And that should give you the minimum water volume for that number of fish. Check this video for more details: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZezqYtppt9khas All the best on your adventure!

KZbin comments and notification system is notorious for frequent failures. It is very frustrating for everyone, but specially for creators of videos like you and me. And it's not just notifications...scheduling livestreams, never ending processing videos into HD format - you name it!

Hi, I’m a little late to this video but I was wondering what type of plant that is in 3:52? Thank you! Edit: the green one in the water :)) I had some of those plants for my guppies a year ago but I had to move so I gave them away along with the plants

You never late to ask! It is Elodea. I have videos about it for more details: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6utf2qers-tnrs

The minnows must be dieing after put them into freezing water
@4me2 жыл бұрын
They live in this pond under ice through the Winter. And I took time for the water in the jar to get as cold as the water in the pond before releasing them into the pond - this way there should be no temperature shock for fish.

That isn't a good setup for them... They should have at least a 10gal tank. Right now I have a handful of minnows in my turtle tank (the minnows are food for the turtles, plus they provide Exercise and enrichment) and in that tank they have 3 filters (turtles are super messy!) an air bubbler and 3 hiding places. They're fed every 2-3 days, which is what's recommended. If I didn't have turtles in the tank, I'd put in live plants as well, but since I have turtles, I can't because the turtles would just eat them.

This was not and never meant to be setup for them. I used what was available to save the fish until it was safe to return them back to to pond. And I did return them - it shown in follow up video. As for the rest - I don't keep minnows to tell you anything for sure about the care. You probably know more about it from your experience. Have fun and happy fish :)

@@4me I didn't see the followup video. Thanks for saving them! I have little to no experience with fish, but am learning. I like having minnows in my turtle tank and I want them to be as comfortable as possible until they become dinner for the turtles.

It was my pleasure! And great adventure I learnt more than a couple things from 🙂 I would suggest you getting another small tank for culturing fast growing aquatic plants (Elodea, guppy grass and such). It takes about a month or so for those plants to double up in the volume - so you could use the spare plants for pets in your main aquarium to feed on 😉
