4:15 As of why vortex didnt launch your skyrim with mods enabled this is an issue on windows aswell: its very simple the vortex mod manager for some reason defaults to launching skyrim with the **official exe** , to launch skyrim with mods what you actually wanna do is add skyrim script extended (skse) into your dashboard on vortex, and launch from there, or always launch skyrim from the script extender manually the skyrim script extender is essential for modding, when bethesda dropped anniversary edition update on skyrim special edition back in 2021 atleast 90% of nexus mods broke, why? Because the script extender is essential for loading those mods, and it is very tight to what "version" of the game engine it runs on the script extender modifies the skyrim engine to allow various scripts to run which are vital dependancies for most mods to work as of now the script extender has been updated to be compatible with the now 2 and half year old update so you dont need to worry about that with mods, but yea that was a frustrating moment, when bethesda pissed of most of the skyrim community with attempt to cashcow celebrate its 10th anniversary, by breaking the modding scene... TL;DR: you need the script extender to run mods, vortex' skyrim launcher is not the script extender

It all comes down if the game is modding friendly or nah. Sims 4 you just have to drop the things on a directory and enable modds in game. Same with TF2
@Chr0n0s385 ай бұрын
There's a bit more to it than that. Bethesda games are very mod-friendly. Tools like mo2 exist to make modding better. One of the greatest benefits to these tools are profiles. You can have different modded profiles using virtual filesystems so different saves use different sets of mods. Maybe you want a FO4 run with a ton of minutemen enhancements, and a BOS run but mods conflict with each other. Using profiles you can have both set up for different characters. Just dropping things in a directory doesn't get you that level of control.

A huge sleeper issue with game mods even before considering mod managers is filename case sensitivity. Borgtorp1.TGA is a different file from Borgtorp1.tga - so, you end up having both files in the same directory and it’s a crapshoot if it will load the file you want or will load the original, unmodded file. Windows programs don’t expect this situation to even be possible. Ah, mentioned around 5:20! Thanks! For ext4, it’s required upon *partition creation* to enable the casefold property, which means that your base default installer for your OS likely won’t work for this purpose. For OpenZFS, zfs create -o casesensivity=insensitive will create a subvolume with case insensitivity. I do this when creating my Lutris subset.

Now here's a new challenge regarding game modding. Get tools like Cheat Engine (for single-player games, I find this really helpful for finding memory values and testing code modifications while the game is actually running) and a DLL code debugger (like gdb running in WINE), Special K (Some games have enhancements done through it, and there's some great framerate limiting and shader tools with it), RenderDoc (Note: Before the Vulkan conversion is being done), and DLL-based mods to run. I don't even think that the FSR 3 mods for GTA V and Baldur's Gate 3 even run on Proton or the Steam Deck, because they require some sort of D3D11 to D3D12 interop functionality that doesn't work on DXVK and VKD3D. If there's one thing I can definitely say about game modding on Linux, is that for developers of mods, it's more challenging than Windows to actually debug code, and for a standard user, having to deal with WINE specific quirks (WINEDLLOVERRIDES, redistributables for individual wine prefixes, some mod managers being painful to get working right, especially Reloaded II) might be a deal-breaker, I just don't think it's documented enough in an accessible place. I still think that a lot needs to be done to make developing mods for Windows games less painful on Linux, for example.

Managing mods is the same, but the first steps may be more convoluted. On Windows all you need is the installed game and installed mod manager app. On Linux, games or any windows executives can be in separate containers, so the paths will be different, they cannot see each other, etc. This is why you need to install mod manager in the same container (you have to track it down very, very, very deep in the system, or symlink them. To avoid that manual tinkering, you may use Bottles, but still, you need to be aware of some things. Also, some very advanced and scripted mods may not work well in Linux. Modding on Linux is not as straight forward and may be challenging to figure it out. Once the mod manager works and detects the game, the rest is mostly similar, but mod managers may be causing some unexpected problems sometimes, because they are build for Windows. Mod manager in general works better on Linux. Vortex can be tricky.

In my experience, the more the mods interact with the OS, the easier it breaks. For example, in Skyrim mods that are just plugins or texture/mesh replacers work just fine, but SKSE (.dll) mods can have problems. More so tools like nemesis, synthesis, etc. Also, it depens on how the game handles mods. In Rimworld for example the mods take a LOT more ram, maybe double (for 200+ mods maxing vm.max_map_count is a must).

Also whenever close and open bottles again everything is undone, do you have any ideas on how to fix this weird issue?
@MichaelNROH5 ай бұрын
I have been experiencing the Bottles issue as well after a reboot. Seems like it has something to do with the Bottles not regarding third party stuff when using the Steam runtime. I solved it as far, as just linking the executable in drive_C so that I can quickly drag and drop it into the bottle when clicking (Browse Files). You could also make a shortcut via your Desktop Environment and start it with your Bottle (it should ask you). The dotnet integration started downloading automatically as soon as I installed my first mod (See in downloads). There would alternatively also be the Dependency setting in the bottle setting which can also download (it's called dotnet or something)

IDK why but bottles never worked for me, I use lutris btw
@MichaelNROH5 ай бұрын
Lutris is also pretty great as long as it doesn't break. When Ubisoft had some shennanigans, it broke my Lutris Config a bunch of times, which is why I axed it

Maybe Reloaded 2 and Concursus would have been great additions to the mod managers and installers you showed... Also, I think I saw Sonic Frontiers in your library by the past so why bot presenting HedgeMod Manager ? Especially since you're supposee to run it on Bottles and it's a bit of a hassle to make it work ans the community is never there if you need help...

When I try to download mods it shows "game not discovered". I tried to fix that but nothing works. does anyone know how to fix that? Because I definitely have the game.

If you're playing an modded Bethesda game, you had to have certain mods load after or before one of the mods which I can't imagine doing that manually and not used an mod launcher for it.

@HickoryDickory865 ай бұрын
If by "outdated" you mean "old," yes, New Vegas is old. It came out in 2010. But that's just one year before Skyrim. And besides, it's arguably the best game in the Fallout franchise, so age doesn't really matter. And the bigger, older titles have been in players' and modders' hands for longer, so they often tend to be the better supported titles on Linux.
@southbranch5 ай бұрын
@@HickoryDickory86 yeah exactly new vegas still has a massive mod community and even larger fan base. modding it is generally "easy" the hardest part is how to as there is many ways out there and in some cases like mine perhaps jury-rigged a bit funny but if it works it works right.
