I just moved over to Linux myself and am very happy with pretty much everything. Nvidia drivers are a nightmare for most distros unless it comes with easy install methods (Ubuntu, mint, etc). I want to run Fedora but despite all the tutorials, I just could not get it to be stable. How about a video on getting this running for all the newbies out there like me 😉

Fedora can handle graphically now days (if you not have secure boot enable). In the GNOME Software, at the three dots, have an option for repositories. There the repository for NVIDIA is already set (but no enabled). Just enable it, reload the store and, in store, search for the driver. I think this is the most Fedora will go to provide NVIDIA drivers with ease without legal problems.

I'm pretty sure if you enable 3rd party repos during the 1st launch (it asks you if you want to do this) you get access to the nvidia drivers. Fedora has the advantage of always having an up to date kernel (required for new hardware) and the 3D bits (required for games), unlike Ubuntu and it's derivatives. Stick to Flatpak applications as much as possible to avoid library conflicts and it's the most rock solid distro you'll ever use.

A distro is feel is very underrated for beginners, & those with older/weaker hardware is Solus w/Budgie DE, it has plenty of software in their repos, it's easy to use, it's rolling release ,so it's updated fairly regularly, but way less chance of something breaking like on vanilla Arch, it's not based on Ubuntu, it has a familiar layout for those coming from Windows, most hardware just works, & there's a solid team behind the dirsto, so you know it's got a good future ahead of it.

I'm working on week 3 of daily driving Fedora 40 with KDE Plasma, I absolutely love it! It actually feels a lot better than being on Windows, surprisingly. I'm still getting used to Dolphin and how it works as I'm used to a My Computer and navigating around that way, rather than starting in the Home folder. But I'll get the hang of it!

It's worth noting that Linus Torvalds himself uses Fedora! It's beginner friendly, and Mr. Linux himself uses it! I've never distrohopped to it, but when I finally turn my windows 10 gaming partition into a Pop!_OS gaming partition, I might distrohop on my main partition to Nobara just to do side by side benchmark comparisons of games I like to play. If Nobara outperforms Pop!_OS, might have THAT be my gaming partition instead!

@@Novskyy621 what is meaningful varies between people investing benchmarks with meaning, and it depends on their hardware, their use-cases, etc, so what isn't meaningful for you and your setup might be really meaningful for someone else with different hardware! upvoted you since I think you're making a fair point for you and many folks like you, but I also think it's not worthwhile to universalize your set of criteria for evaluating what is or isn't meaningful in benchmark differences onto people with different use-cases and hardware than you!

nobara is a seriously underrated distro, its not just for gaming. it comes with a faster kernel, more kernel patches (specifically for surface devices and asus laptops), and overall is super simple to use. also it comes with a custom version of kde, gnome, and stock kde. I very much reccommend it to beginners

I've been using Nobara for almost two years and I love it. Never had problems with it. However, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to a beginner. At least when it comes to upgrading versions because you have to run multiple commands and some beginners really don't like to do that. Also, when updating, I can see some beginners doing it from Discover instead of the Nobara updater, which is a baaad idea.

@@Automata_Omega Yeah, snapper is awesome. And all out of the box. No need to set things up. It just works. The only thing is printer management (my printer does not work while it does on Ubuntu based distros). And I would love to see a minimal install. It is a pain in the ass to set up everything minimal, still get new packages that you benefit from but no programs that are not needed and you don't want. Debian is hell. Tried it many times. Mint though works perfect for my mother on a 12 year old Vaio Laptop. 2 Years ago I installed it and she never had any problems.

Only problem is Nobara/Fedora 40 currently has issues in Workstation. Once that works, I should be good to go. The main reason for Nobara on my desktop is for gaming. Currently running Fedora 40 KDE, the best Linux experience i've ever had as someone who has used Windows primarily for years. However, the linux ecosystem still needs better App support and definitely still has a few quirks to work out. For example, was trying to use gnome-network-display to mirror something to a tv, and it just didn't work. Would have never had the same issue with Windows, where miracast just works, even Mac OS works flawlessly. It's seemingly small inconveniences like that which continue to make it a niche/undesirable desktop experience.

With games, it depends on what you're playing. Pretty much everything except online-games-as-a-service-with-Windows-only-anti-cheat tend to be fine, but you might need to use Bottles/Lutris/Wine for non-Steam games. If you're playing popular online games with strict Windows-only anti-cheat, those probably won't work. For specific software like FL Studio, just do a search online to see what you find. Seems like it's doable at first glance with wine, but it's not officially supported with a native release.

I've switched last year to 100% linux. Here are my tips from software compatibility side of things: Try Nobara - it's set up out of the box for gaming and windows compatibility. It comes preinstalled with the Glorious Eggroll (GE) branch of Wine/Proton. It generally tends to work with most things I throw at it. Gaming works fairly well. If you play on Steam, you can expect anything to run that doesn't have some kind of extra prohibitive anti cheat tool. But even then, Helldivers 2 works despite having a kernel level anti cheat solution. These days I've stopped checking if a game is compatible before bying it - so far never ran into a game I couldn't play. You might have to familiarise yourself with tools like Wine or Bottles if you have some special needs like running something with Japanese locale or something exotic like that. Many things just work out of the box without any tinkering. Can't speak for FL studio though. Regarding performance: Wine / Proton are just bridging the API between windows and Linux - it's not emulation, so there generally should be no noticeable performance difference. If you have a high end Nvidia GPU you might not be able to use some of it's performance enhancements like DLSS though. Here's hoping Nvidia, being the most valuable company in the world, might find it within their means to hire a Linux maintainer for their drivers one of these days. 😅

AMD has much better support than NVDIA, since they directly contribute to the Open Source library MESA. If you however use it professionally then some programs prefer CUDA rather than AMD's OpenCL

Having tried a bunch of flavors so far, I give the most points to the distro that makes it as easy as possible to be set up with my nvidia optimus GPU using nvidia closed source drivers. So far, Kubuntu and Fedora have been overall the most painless. Debian for some reason was an absolute nightmare, and I have demonstrated to myself that I am not at all ready for Arch. On Fedora currently as I'm trying to get myself familiar with a workflow that's very much not Windows, and I romantically like the idea of adapting to the noise minimizing workflow pure gnome talks about. That combined with trying to function more overall on the keyboard and less on the mouse, so far so good, albeit with some growing pains.

@MichaelNROH I tried to install my Nvidia GFX driver on fedora for 2 straight weeks following a whole bunch of YT how too's and the result was either outdated commands and videos focusing on OLDER distro versions which no longer worked on the current Ferdora(40) or had me jumping through so many hoops and one line of commands to the next, including going down to the level 3 and trying to compile and install drivers that I just got tired of trying to be frank. The one time I did get it right, the very next day an update came along and messed everything up..... I work on my PC and can not afford to have to run system repairs every time a kernel update decides to mess things up.... I'm on Ubuntu now, still not just click click click, but I am fine with doing terminal commands as long as they are well explained and I can start getting to grips with the terminal... And how to work in it.... People like yourself that have been working in these environments for a while forget what it is like to have to try and start over and learn a new thing, then when asked for some help we lowly windows users get smug comments that do not help us and just further put us off of trying to use some Linux or Debian distro's..... You forget one thing..... Easy for someone who is terminal literate or terminal savvy is NOT easy for someone who is just coming over to a Linux or Debian distro from windows. I do not expect my hardware to "just work" without installing the needed drivers, I do however expect to be able to install my hardwares drivers with a well explained and well set out set of terminal commands. Terminal commands that are maintained and or how too's who's terminal commands are at the very least updated with current installs of the distro's, to make it easier for, lets be frank, windows users, to be able to adopt Linux or Debian distro's.... Working in terminal is not the issue, it is the commands not being set out or specified correctly that put off windows users, eg. Linux terminal telling you it can't install something because something else is missing, now, you go down another rabbit whole trying to figure out how to install the missing item, only to find that the missing item is no longer maintained and you can not install what you need to because the original item needs those libraries or dependencies but terminal just tells you that the current version is newer, then terminal does not install the NEEDED file, kernel or dependency..... Not only that, if you do manage to install what is needed something else will now not work because you broke a dependency or installed a library that it does not like....... 👆 This, for windows users..... This is the issue,.....

"I tried to install my Nvidia GFX driver on fedora for 2 straight weeks following a whole....". Install Fedora, ENABLE third party repos when you set up your user account. Update and reboot. Open the software store and type in NVIDIA, click install driver, wait for that to happen, reboot. DONE. That's how you do it, you're probably overthinking it. "...can not afford to have to run system repairs every time a kernel update..." If your system is breaking after a simple Kernel update I suspect you've not been installing display drivers properly, see above. This should not be happening. "I do not expect my hardware to "just work" without installing the needed drivers, I do however expect to be able to install my hardwares drivers with a well explained and well set out set of terminal commands"..... this is how Windows works, not Linux ( with the exception of NVIDIA ). ALL supported hardware in Linux is plug and play. The drivers are in the Linux Kernel. The newer your hardware the newer the Kernel you will need IF that hardware is supported. End of conversation... plug and play. If your hardware isn't working its not supported, end of conversation. There are few reasons to be using the Terminal at all these days. In many, but not all, cases there's no reasons to use it at all, but its great knowing and understanding it, like powershell is on Windows. I hope you consider this comment helpful, it was the intention, because if you conceive it as "smug" I'm afraid you'll never listen to anyone trying to do the same.

Well, ☝️ THIS is what a usefull comment looks like, but this kind of answer I am affraid IS NOT the usual kind of answer I or others tend to get. Assuming that I do not listen to anyone is not fair. The smug answers are a VERY REAL AND VERY COMMON occurrence and why I pointed it out. Because, near on 75% of comments I have read all state in one form or another that if you do not use the terminal, and, if you do not magically know the correct syntax you do not deserve to be running any Linux or Debian distro. Unfortuanatly, this is a very common answer toward users such as myself coming from windows. And again why I pointed it out.... I will go back and try your suggestions possibly this evevning or this weekend. On one of linux entertainments videos, I was told point blank, "if you do not use the terminal you will never swtich to Fedora, Fedora is FOSS driven and you will have to live with that or go back to windows, there are enough explanations on youtube where your hand is held, follow those or go back to windows and stop complaining... " Does that seem like a "helpful" comment to you? That is the kind of comment I am refering to, and there are a lot of those kind of comments..... Answers like yours are VERY FEW AND FAR BETWEEN, and that is the truth. I will admit this though, the Fedora forum has one of the most helpful and posotive responding folks I have come across compared to other linux forums... And that is the truth. My detail above is how windows users are treated in general when it comes to the terminal..... And that is also the truth....

@@GapRecordingsNamibia "you will never swtich to Fedora, Fedora is FOSS driven"...... It ships with a FOSS user space, but not Kernel. ENABLE third party repo's and you can then add NVIDIA and Media Codec's ( you'll need the latter, I usually just install VLC ). My advise regarding people, because that's what they are..... and this applies with anything in life.... ignore the idiots. Stick to a distro's website and their own forums if you need help. Good luck.

@@MichaelNROH However great hardware support certainly includes supporting newer hardware, alongside a wide range of older hardware and accessories. Debian 12 is not as easy to install as many think. A while back I let someone try to install it and it was just question after question. Especially tough parts were what to enter for the Network-Proxy (nothing to be precise), what partitions are and what they should choose, and what an apt mirror is. Stuff like this needs to be hidden from beginners, but definitely kept if you know what these are. When you even get a command prompt like: "Only do this if you know exactly what you are doing!" and even gives you a different prompt from your usualy y/n with asking you to type a complete sentence with "Yes, do as I say!" , what more can you do to warn people. Except making the prompt red in the terminal. What happened was, that something, i think it was the DE, used some older or newer library than steam, and with overwriting the library the DE did not start anymore. That would have also been fixable, but on a freshly setup maschine with no customizations, reinstalling at that point would have probably been the same amount of effort.
