The advice sure is the right way to go thank you. I managed to get as far as installing Davinci, but it chokes. Its for reasons, not to do with your advice. It is QT and Python again at work here. If I can get Davinci to start up, this will be great. Your advice at least helped me to get this far. However, using the exact steps you did with the exact Fedora etc, Davinci wont run because of the following error. " This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "xcb". Available platform plugins are: linuxfb, minimal, offscreen, xcb. " Strange that I got to this unresolvable Python/QT nonsense following the same advice. Wherever Python and or QT goes, goes trouble - guaranteed. They are half baked languages.

I'm going to test it here on my distribution with RX 580 CPU XEON 2680 V-4 with 32 GB of RAM. I wish that the majority of Linux channels here in Brazil would be nothing more than a showcase where the only purpose is not to show features but to try to harm Linux in Brazil. Of course, this is not a generalization, but the big channels focus on seeing things working and not making them work. I hope the audio track for the videos also dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese comes soon. Big hug and success.

I am more than a little intimidated. So many things make me ask... Why is this the users task to solve? If Linux truly wants to be the ruling OS of the masses. There really needs to be an overhaul of basics. Reinstalling the same app over and over to weed out the dependencies (whatever that means)??? Should there not be an option in the myriad of terminal commands to install the necessary bits and bobs automagically. And should that not be the default option in the first place? A "this will run the app on most systems and you can opt to do things manually if you want or if the defaults don't work as expected"? Sorry it became an unintelligible rant. But still. I am very much confused about why this is the end users problem.

bro i am trying this for 2 days please help me. i have ubuntu. i installed distrobox and set everything as you told. but when i was installing nvidia drivers it gave error it was saying 185mb more diskspace required. by the way more than 25 gb was free in the disk.
@leeuca6 ай бұрын
The thing is, that you dont need to install the drivers at all. I was tinkering with this a lot. It seems that you just need to make sure, that the host has the most recent drivers + cuda installed. Then go into the container and use sudo dnf install ocl-icd-devel and in my case this fixed the issue! I'm running this on Ubuntu 24

I got davinci working on my Fedora 38 some time ago without many problems (Although I never managed to make it working with my previous rx 580 even with rocm-opencl and distrobox), however, for some reason, anything i import is just black and won't play, both audio and video file. And yes, I do convert them to a supported format. I can´t find anything regarding this problem :/ Edit: just tried after two weeks and it's now working perfectly! So maybe some dependencies were causing issues. So yeah, success on Fedora 38.

@MichaelNROH Жыл бұрын
I'm on Wayland, so I don't think that that's the issue. It might be related to double opencl-packages since some versions of mesa-opencl manage to open it, but not play any videos. If both rocm and mesa-opencl are installed, they might be conflicting.

Did you buy the studio edition? The free version doesn't come with H.264 support which is the codec that is often being used for mp4 by default.

My problem is Most of the time i got mp4 files and have to convert to mov using xdcam hd 422 which make file 5-6 times larger as compared to mp4 file and it makes my davinci slow So are there any other method so size doesnt increase too much and quality doesn't decrease

You can build flatpak for Davinci Resolve also. I am using flatpak.

@MichaelNROH7 ай бұрын
Resolve's individual "programs" are being built differently. The Editing mode usually reads both user and system fonts, while Fusion only reads system fonts by default. I talked about this at the end of this video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/j37Xm4WeZtuYlaM

@MichaelNROH Жыл бұрын
Most codecs are not available on Linux and MacOS due to Licensing costs. If you have the paid Studio version you get access to more, though some are still restricted to NVIDIA for some reason.

I'm on W 10 but thinking about switching to Linux. Would the simplest solution for me be to first install Fedora 37 as the operating system and thus simplify the installation of DaVinci Resolve? That is, the only thing that matters to me is that I have a linux distro that works stably with DaVinci.
@MichaelNROH7 ай бұрын
The current version of Fedora is 40. Generally speaking, with distrobox it doesn't matter if you install Ubuntu, Fedora or something else. Just pick the one that looks the nicest. I've pinned a comment with some additional information

@DJNightchild Жыл бұрын
No, because it's not virtualization. Containers do not take much resources, except perhaps disk space.
@henriquekirchheck Жыл бұрын
Containers use the same Kernel as your native distro making them incredibly efficient, so it will only need a little bit more disk space because of the repeated dependencies.
@monochrome_linux Жыл бұрын
Containers run at the same speed as your host PC. The only sacrifice is some storage space.

Has anyone managed to do this with NVIDIA GPU ? I'm trying this on NixOS, but Resolve throws an error at startup and doesn't seem to find the GPU 😅 So frustrating, I feel like I'm so close !
@MichaelNROH Жыл бұрын
I can't test it at the moment, but it seems like you need to install the NVIDIA driver on your host, as well as inside the container. (You might need to restart it again). The nvidia-smi command should work on the host as well as within distrobox.

@@RacsuTech It's good to know it can work, it's encouraging ! I'm still unlucky on my side, I followed all tutorials I could find, installed NVIDIA drivers, CUDA, OpenGL... But it still gives me an error. Maybe this comes from the container's driver's version being not the same as in the host. I put all my hopes in Distrobox's last update that lets a container use its host's NVIDIA drivers, can't wait for it to be available on NixOS 🤞🏻

It also worked for me but only with Fedora 39 using "distrobox-create --name Resolve-Fedora-39 --image fedora:39 --nvidia --root --additional-flags "--privileged" ", then enter with "distrobox-enter --name Resolve-Fedora-39 --root" , and you can check with "nvidia-smi". Then just installed those dependencies in the video description. Don't forget to enable RPM fusion.

I was wondering if you could answer a quick question. This setup works great, but Davinci can't seem to open my lut folder. I'm wondering if it works on yours? Do you know the path to where luts are stored inside the container? I can't seem to find the path
@rjlarussa41369 ай бұрын
I managed to find it in the standard resolve path, just the hidden ".LUT" folder was missing. I created it and dropped my luts in. It seems to somehow create the default resolve luts on startup so mine are duplicated, as I have all my standard resolve luts in a subfolder. Weird behavior but it seems to work!
