Great podcast and important guests. Thanks, Michael. If I may add some input … I am a 72 year old white female with a lifelong interest in politics, history and social/civic actions. I do not have a college degree. I realized years ago that it was the insistence from my parents that fostered my interest and ongoing search to assimilate and understand how our government works. I am ever grateful to my folks and grandparents for their fostering of this. I also realize that most of my peers, classmates, friends and acquaintances were not given the same levels of familial based education. So, ask yourselves: how many middle class and struggling lower middle class people do you think are REALLY following politics? How many, between election cycles, try to keep up with what legislation is introduced, passed, rejected or vetoed that impact their daily lives? How many have read The Constitution in full? How many understand the purpose and necessity of Separation of Powers & peaceful transition? How does big money manage to change and control social and political opinion? I think you’ve answered the reasons for amped up fears and frustration. But, we must attempt to address the lack of educational emphasis about civics and history. I would say starting in elementary school and continuing every year thereafter. Somehow we need to elevate the enthusiasm of learning more about these things among young people. Looking around the American landscape, it is a very small number of folks who start their adulthood WANTING to go into politics. Among those who do, a sizable percentage come from political families who have won or lost elections. How do we encourage and support political neophytes to join the fray while making sure that they actually understand the way our Representative Democracy works? Just some thoughts from an old Democrat in Texas.

Maybe they should consult the man in the street and the growing numbers of homeless and working poor who cannot afford to live in a plutocracy.
@Other3.5 Жыл бұрын
Great video. For the past 40 years, we have followed an extractive economic model (both parties), where money is literally taken out of the wallets of the middle and working classes and handed to the wealthy and corporations. Productivity gains once allocated to those who earned them (management and employees) are now taken by executives (their share and their employees' share). Tax cuts are not cuts, they are tax shifts where wealthy and corporate taxes are shifted to the middle and working classes in the form of higher taxes and less services. Then, as the wealthy inherit millions and executives loot their own companies (share buy backs etc), every one else is supposed to stand on their own two feet ("individual responsibility). Given that most Americans have been made to believe that they should be proud of the successes of the billionaires (while not knowing about their massive tax payer subsidies, risk being born by tax payers, and their basically looting the economy in a $6000 suit), Who do they blame for job insecurity, no money in the bank, etc? Either themselves or an "other." This is not hard. Perhaps those who struggle to figure this out are just not talking to the people they're trying to understand.

Thank you for talking about these important issues. I'm hopeful that if Donald Trump loses the vote in 2024 for a 3rd time in a row, maybe ... maybe ... the Republicans will finally be forced to start thinking about how they can grow and change into a party that deserves majority support in America. Right now, the Republicans are increasingly relying on non-democratic means to stay in power. If they continue to lose, they will be forced to sit down and figure out how to *earn* positions of power.
@jannichi6431 Жыл бұрын
Like to see a renaming of the Party like Centerest (centered) Party. Today the Republicans have been captured by MAGA Trumpsters with Zero policy or platform only blame and grievance. Montana is interesting with what Happened post Cyber Ninjas rererecount of Maricopa county. Somehow voter paperwork got shipped up there. Any knowledge as to Why? Ted Cruz visited also. I'm sure tourism is big but you sure had a flux there 2018-2020. Just a layman's observation, Jerusalem and Big Bend, TX had peoples travel log too as a couple other examples pre COVID. We appoint Supreme Court Justices to the age of 75 in Canada. Unfortunately, our Senators are appointed for life with no limit. We have a worse problem than you do in the US. Their relatives wheel them in on hospital beds to keep the big cheques rolling in. You have to show up a certain number of days per year. I have been writing members of Parliament asking for age limits and elected Senators my entire adult life. Looks like we can learn from each other here......

THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED to provide a double-majority. Double-majority and multiple-majority systems mandate more widespread support for a candidate or measure than would be needed under an ordinary majority vote. Unfortunately, in the United States, it is possible to pass tax increases and other types of sweeping and costly legislation with nothing more than bare majorities from Congress which is itself largely a collection of millionaires with similar educations, backgrounds, and economic status. Even this low standard is not required in cases where the president rules via executive order with " a pen and ... a phone ." In response to this centralization of political power, the electoral college should be expanded to function as a veto on legislation, executive orders, and Supreme Court rulings.

These issues are rooted in susceptibility and permission. When the populous is susceptible to adverse messaging often focusing upon their fears (i.e. other-ism and economic digression) and a demigod gives them permission to rage against his chosen targets, the cycle of feeds upon itself thereby giving the demigod more strength and further entrenching the base. This is exactly what happened in 1930's Germany. The Versailles Treaty left that population in economic squalor and when their leader gave them permission to be angry at others (the West for instance), he was then able to point their ire at his primary goal (the eradication of a cultural or ethnic segment of the population). We should be very concerned what history has taught us about reversing this trend. That is to say it often takes a war to reset the table. To reach that place however it often takes the ultimate sacrifice of the innocent.
