I have been watching videos continuously for the past few days trying to get ready to shoot my parents 50th wedding anniversary which is today. This video has been the most useful to me so far. Just the tip on hitting the okay button to return to the center of your focusing cluster would have been enough. Thank you for sharing this one . . I am subscribing now.

Despite my buying a SonyA73 a few years back, I kept my late twins Nikon D5300 and found this to be excellent! It went off my settings and I didn't know all of this! Learning both cameras is a little tricky for me. So I decided to really start working on this one as I had done alot with the Sony. Thank you ever so much for this! Now I understand alot better how this works....Yay. Both cameras are relevant with my work.

great tutorial ! for people who are not complete beginners : i use back button focusing on my d5300. than i choos AF-S. that way i can use it for everything and i dont change it. i can focus and than let go and recompose without focus change, or i can keep it pressed if the subject is moving and snap picture as the subject moves.. very very useful, gives you much more control

omg dude. On my version of the D5500 there is one point over on the i menu button, so I had to move one more click over to get to Focus Mode and Area Mode, (bought mine in 2015) but aside from one thing my little brain had to figure out, you are spot-on! Thank you very much. I have spent an entire Photography I class wondering how to move the little square around, including the teacher looking at it "I don't know--just google it" which IS good advice of course; I knew the information would be on KZbin. Another student WITH a Nikon (older + different model, maybe a 3100) told me, yeah just move the arrows around the okay button. Well mine did not come set like that! And luckily, I did at least know how to look through the italisized i menu to follow along with you. I mean I learned about changing the exposure +1, -1 and all points in between, also the metering from Matrix (default) to Spot, and Center priority...+ shooting in Manual mode (although I still need a few years under my belt to "master" that, at least in quotation marks master it). But I can change ISO, Shutter speed, and Aperture. So thank you again. I pushed thumbs up on your video. My professional photographer teacher at least told me to look on the Internet until I found the info. She's had every camera, but she has a new thousands of dollars Fujifilm mirrorless that she's real hot on right now, and I have a feeling she was more Canon than Nikon before that. But she pays the rent photographing, and I respect her knowledge. I went on and on, but you hit the nail on the head; I am one step closer to achieving competency with a really good camera that I would recommend to anyone. The reason I had to go up from choosing the 3300 series to 5500 series was just the built in wifi. I love being somewhere and saying, oh, here, I'll give you that photo of yourself. Whip out your phone. Meanwhile I've downloaded it to MY phone (since they don't have the free Nikon downloader app) and I just text it to them. Or I have them download the app if they want the whole session right now. Gotta have wifi, and I'm so glad I did. Thank you again!

Was stuck up with the focusing n watched ur video n the problem was solved. Am going to buy ur book but before I do that kindly clarify whether it would apply on d7200 or even on d750 also or they have different system as I wish to upgrade in the near future. Thanks

auto-area af doesn't just pick the closest subject; it uses a complicated algorithm containing thousands of sample images. It does tend to prioritise human subjects though. 3D-tracking is designed specifically for focus-recomposers. Dynamic area is good for tracking moving subjects like in action sports, but the Nikon-intended usage of 3D tracking is so that you can focus and recompose and the camera 'tracks' the subject as you recompose. I prefer 3D tracking to single-point but there are times when it gets confused as it uses colours to work. For example if the subject and background are almost identical colours, it would get confused and may jump from the subject to the background.
