My mom always said “The older you get, the faster a year goes by”, and I would think to myself “C’mon Mom, a year is the same every year, 52 weeks, 365 days. How can it go faster?” When you’re a kid in school, a year seems to take forever to pass, especially those nine months of the school year. Lo and behold, I now find myself over 70, seems like high school was just a few years ago, Mom lived to be 96 and she’s been gone 12 years. She was more right than I initially gave her credit for.

Such a beautiful song and powerful message. I was a sophomore in college when John Lennon was shot and I remember it like it was yesterday. So sad, all he wanted was peace. And yes---time does go faster the older you get! Wishing you and safe and happy Christmas. ❤

It has been 42 years since John had his life taken from his family and still I get emotional when I hear this song. The womans voice you hear in the background is Yoko singing with a childrens choir. Hope your Christmas went well. A great big Happy New Year from Vancouver Island Canada!

I guess the only explanation for war that I can think of is that yin yang thing of good and evil in essentially every particle of energy in the universe. And how that translates to the human condition on a macrocosmic scale. The thing is the need to evolve beyond division and polarity, going from the darkness to the light. It's a process we need to develop from within.

Yes, John did branch off from the Beatles. In fact, every member did, the band broke up in 1970. Paul and George also have their own Christmas songs (Wonderful Christmastime and Ding Dong Ding Dong respectively), and Ringo had a whole Christmas album. The girl you were hearing was John's wife Yoko Ono.

Good react. You should try to find the whole version -- it's on "Shaved Fish." This song actually ends with a wicked bass line that lasts for a good minute or so, one of the most kick-ass bass lines I've ever heard, right up there with "Ellen West" by Throwing Muses. Weird for a Christmas song to end with a sinister bass line, but it does.

One last comment and then I'm gone I know you seem to really like John Lennon and most people do including myself and you seem to really like this song but he has another song that has a theme similar to this song that's not a Christmas song and that song is called imagine. You may want to check that song out at some time in the future I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that's strictly a John Lennon song My Favorite Beatles song is Hey Jude if you're interested in what I think is one of the greatest Beatles songs they got many of them but that's one of my favorites that and maybe Yellow Submarine.

The years pass by faster the older you get, Michael! Just wait until you are 75 like me, and a year goes by like it's only a month, it's SCARY!! If you are familiar at all with an hour glass....life goes like an hour glass when you turn it over with the sand at it's fullest at the top of the glass, but as the grains of sand go through to the bottom of the glass, the sand at the fop starts going faster to the bottom until the top is empty.....it's exactly the way your life passes by as you age.

You're absolutely right about seems like every year goes by faster than the last and there's a very very good and powerful reason for that. We are and what the Bible and especially Revelations talks about as the great sorting separating the wheat from the shaft and that's kind of what's going on we're getting near the leap to a brand new world and in reality it's not time that speeded up it's creation has speeded up in other words everything gets created work through and ended much faster than it used to be when we were younger and there's going to come a time where we have this great solar Flash it's also called the great event but at that moment that's when the old ends and the new begins and many people that are here now won't be in the new and that'll separate to another three-dimensional world. I could speak more on the topic but I'm going to stop right here because it's a very deep topic and really all I wanted to deal with was the feeling that time has speeded up because in reality time doesn't exist so what has speeded up is creation. When we all make the jump to the new world that is those who are able to go we will learn pretty quickly that time does not exist in that world time is a created necessity for three-dimensional worlds but it doesn't exist in any other worlds or dimensions.

Actually, as a former song-writer myself, I think the line, "without any fear" was every bit as much about it rhyming with the line, "and happy New year", as it was the actual underlying message. For me, the only negative in this otherwise great song is Yoko's annoying voice in the chorus.
