It is considered a badge of honor to have a song done by Al. MJ has a couple. Yankovic was able to get permission from Michael Jackson to use the same subway set from "Bad" for the video. You should check out more of Weird Al. Yes he does original content as well.

This one is a classic that goes well with his parody of "Beat It" called "Eat It", lol. He did do a few original songs but they never took off like his parodies did, and YES - he had a rule that he'd always reach out to the original artist beforehand and get their blessing, and wouldn't do the parody if they weren't okay with it. He said in an interview once that he had had the idea of parodying Paul McCartney's song that Paul recorded with his late wife Linda, "Live and Let Die" as the parody "Chicken Pot Pie", and Al reached out to Paul and Paul said he thought it would be funny but that his late wife was a strict vegetarian and animal rights activist and wouldn't think it was funny so out of respect Al never did that one. Many musicians actually have come to view being parodied by Weird Al as a badge of honor, a sign that they made it big enough to get parodied which is kinda cool and a good reminder to not take yourself too seriously. Cheers.

Weird Al always gets the artist's permission to do a parody (though technically he doesn't typically need to unless they own their music). He said one of the few people who ever turned him down was Prince.

He doesn't even need permission if the artist does own the music. Anyone can post a parody on line under the "fair use" Supreme Court ruling. An example is Al posted You're Pitiful, a parody of You're Beautiful by James Blunt.

Led Zeppelin had also denied Weird Al's request. In the 'Trapped in the Drive Thru' MV they play a little guitar solo of 'Black Dog' Weird Al did 'couch potato' a parody of Eminem 'Lose Yourself.' But Eminem had asked him not to make a music video. Eminem has also been on Al TV. Weird Al takes an interview of Eminem and edits it with him asking Weird questions with out of context answers.

I've been a Weird Al fan for four decades. If you listen to his discography, you hear his parodies becoming increasingly sophisticated and nuanced. He is backed by a very talented band that can play anything. Another One Rides the Bus is one of his earliest, based on Queen's Another One Bites the Dust. In his very earliest parodies, he sings in a crazy voice, and accompanies himself on accordian (he said his parents paid for lessons because, apparently, they didn't think he had been beaten up enough). But he is actually an excellent singer, and his later parodies sound a lot like the original. I love his straight parodies like Word Crimes (for Blurred Lines), Tacky ( Happy), White and Nerdy (Ridin' Dirty), Amish Paradise ( Gangsta's Paradise), Couch Potato (Lose Yourself), Trapped in the Drive Thru (Trapped in the Closet), Perform This Way (Born This Way). It's a very long list. In his videos, watch for celebrity cameos and LOTS of sight gags. Zoom in and see whose Wikipedia page he's editing on White and Nerdy, and who has his top eight spaces in MySpace. Zoom in and read the signs and the cover on the Amish porn magazine in Amish Paradise. Forgot a couple of the Nine Inch Nails parodies: Germs and Livin' in the Fridge. And one by Dire Straits (Beverly Hillbillies for Money for Nothing; Mark Knopfler plays on it). His style parodies sound like the real band, until you listen to the words. My favorite is his Doors style parody: Craigs List, where he channels Jim Morrison. The late, great Ray Manzarek lends his signature sound on the keyboards. Do Hardware Store, but whatever you do, never ever EVER pause during the third verse! You'll kill the effect. Amazing. And on every album, he has to show off his accordion skills by doing a mashup of current popular songs and making a polka medley out of them. His latest polka is the Hamilton Polka, where the set the entire broadway play to a polka medley. He and Lin Manuel Miranda are friends. Lin loved it. Enjoy! The style parodies

And he does have original songs he has done. OH! And you have GOT to do "The Saga Begins" which is a parody of Star Wars to the tune of Don McLean's American Pie.

@norbertzillatron3456 Жыл бұрын
Besides a plethora of impressive great parodies, he also did a lot of style parodies/homages, where he writes his own song in the style of other artists. E.g. "Genius in France" like Frank Zappa, "Bob" like Bob Dylan (the video is like one of Dylan videos, but the music is Weird Al. The Lyrics are something else, and you may need some time reading them to get how they make sense.) And he got many original songs like "Pancreas" (scientifically correct), "Weasel Stomping Day", "Hardware Store", ...

Michael Jackson loved Weird Al's parodies and they met in person a few times. Maybe the joke hasn't aged well (it could be considered as body-shaming, although I'm sure Weird Al didn't mean it like that) but it still makes me giggle. He wanted to make a parody of "Black or White" next but MJ declined as he thought it had too important message to be made fun of. And later Yankovic praised MJ's decision.

Michael actually loved Weird Al and gave him permission to use the same set for both "Fat" and "Eat It" (parody of "Beat It"). If I remember correctly, he even helped with some of the choreography and got Al in touch with some of his original dancers for Eat it. The same happened with James Brown and "Living With A Hernia" (parody of "Living In America") - James let Al use his stage and coached him on the dance moves. It's probably one of the best imitations I've ever seen. Some other great ones are "Amish Paradise / Gansta's Paradise" and "White & Nerdy / Ridin' Dirty" but if you really want to se a wordsmith in action, my current favorite is "Word Crimes / Blurred Lines". Unbelievable.

When he got word that Weird Al wanted to make this parody, he granted his blessing and even loaned him use of this set he had built, before tearing it down.

@Michael Duffy: MORE recommended parody songs / videos by "Weird Al" to watch ( also you should watch the original first, to be able to be familiar with what "Weird Al" is doing a parody of ) - starting out with "My Bologna" ( parody of "My Sharona" by The Knacks ) - recorded in the college radio station bathroom ( where "Weird Al" was a D.J., while going to college, ) and sent to the "The Dr. Demento Radio Show," where it became REAL popular quickly. Then "Weird Al" got his first national T.V. exposure on "The Tomorrow Show" with Tom Synder ( late night T.V. talk show ) - performing live his hit "Another One Rides the Bus" ( parody of "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen. ) Of course "Weird Al" REALLY became big, a short time later, in the early days of MTV, making parody songs, and parody song videos, of other artists' hit songs and music videos. Like: "Weird Al's" "Eat It" ( parody of "Beat It" by Michael Jackson, ) "Like a Surgeon" ( parody of "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, ) "Smells Like Nirvana" ( parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, ) "I Love Rocky Road" [ parody of "I Love Rock 'n Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts ( cover of The Arrows, ) ] "Ricky" ( parody of "Micky" by Toni Basil, also a loving parody of the famed, old, 1950's, in black-and-white, sitcom "I Love Lucy," ) and MANY more.
@robertc.1958 Жыл бұрын
@Michael Duffy: Also, also - continued from the previous comments: Opps! How could I have forgotten to recommend? - "Living with a Hernia" ( parody of "Living in America" by James Brown. ) Here "Weird Al" gives us a hilarious medical lesson about the having of, and types of, hernias - all to the tune of the old, James Brown hit "Living in America" [ also was used in the movie 'Rocky IV' ( 1985 ) - "Living in America," that is - for former "Rocky" rival, turned ally, "Apollo Creed's" entrance into the ring. ] And then there's "Perform This Way" ( parody of "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, ) "Weird Al's" ode to the strangeness that is Lady Gaga ( and yet NOT in a disrespectful manner to Gaga or her song's message. ) Brilliant use of digital technology - CGI- ing "Weird Al's" face over the faces of a dancer, and then a contortionist. Also - if you are as big of a 'STAR WARS' nerd ( fan ) as many "Weird Al" fans out there, you would enjoy "Yoda" ( parody of "Lola" by The Kinks ) - parody of "Luke Skywalker's" first meeting up with "Yoda" on the planet Dagoba in 1980's 'STAR WARS: Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back.' And "The Saga Begins" ( parody of "American Pie" by Don McLean ) - parody / telling of the plot of 'STAR WARS: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.'
