The tune is written in 5/4, and the clave is a "modified 2:3 guaguanco clave", with an extra hit at the end of each bar).

One quick thing I'd like to add: This is more of a feel thing, I can't quite describe it. I used to do it with my brothers all the time in church (my bros and I all three composed the local Gospel band at church) and of course there is a time signature but a lot of this stuff is played through feeling, we don't count, we just feel....strange but true. Wonderful stuff really! I sincerely advice any novice drummer to learn himself some Songo (type in songo lesson here on YT) or some Mozambique (type in Steve Gadd, he incorporated it into many pop songs) something every drummer should have at his disposal/arsenal. Amazing stuff :) Some more Latin Goddies for ya'll to check out- Dave Weckl - drumtech Latin solo Anything from Horacio el Negro Antonio Sanchez - mind blowing stuff from him too Dafnis Prieto - one of my favorite Latin drummers - has too played with Camilo heck even Dave Discenso's modern drummer solo has latin feel to it, check it out -HP

Aye Carumba!! Few will ever reach this level of perfection (feeling, technique, creativity), but it is truly something to aspire to. Like any form of great art we should be encouraged and inspired by it.

You don't have to be a musical genius to appreciate this kind of rhythm. These three cats are in one accord, whatever Michel brings to the table, is all good. Anthony Jackson is a bass players, bass player. El negro Hernandez, is a drummers drummer. And of course Michel Camilo, Well, this cat is by far one of the fastest and most influential piano players in Jazz today. His style, techniques and harmonics are extraordinary. Just my two...

If we are listening to Michel, then there is still hope for human beings. We may speak different languages, but we can all hear music.

To Trajanus: classical music is all scripted: this music is created on the spot spontaneously. There really no comparison. Yes, classical music takes a a level of knowledge and skill. But the music that this group is creating is pure genius!

@JunieJuno It would be nice to hear that, but I'm not big on Santana doing jazz. I'd rather hear what Pat Metheny might be able to do here.
@BoneyWhy2 жыл бұрын
First: I think Horacio el negro Hernandez is perhaps the greatest drummer in history! I don't know anyone who can maintain those independent patterns on the clav and still do intricate stuff with the rest of his limbs! Second: sometimes I think the volume of the clav is overwhelming the rest of the magic he is doing. It's just how it's coming across to me. Do enlighten me!
@rpinero2113 жыл бұрын
@teddysalida I would normally agree that Metheny doesn't have the chops for this, however, listening to the Pat Metheny-Ornette Colman LP, called Song X, I now believe Metheny has the chops...

I remember posting some years ago, about how ironic is that Tito Puente played Take Five in 4/4 and these guys showed him that you latin jazz can also be played on 5/4. Also that white dude at 3:42 shows latinos that you can actually dance to a 5/4 beat. Love Michel Camilo and "El Negro"
@LoganSusnick14 жыл бұрын
