Some of the best Contra playing Ive heard- that tone is as warm and controlled as it gets!

Artūras is working at Lithuanian National Symphonic orchestra since late 90ties. In this recording, he was playing an old and trashed Möllenbauser cbsn which was nearly 100 years old. The keywork was shaky and rattling, the pads were old and hard, and the wood was as dry as an old shipwreck on a desert coast. Nevertheless, our friend was able to produce beautiful things with that instrument. The rest of our team was also poorly equipped - for example, Šarūnas played 1st part on old (communist) Sonora bassoon, and I played the 2nd part on a Gebr. Mönnig from 1982

@@smalysbassoon thank you for sharing this info! It is amazing how wonderful players are able to create great music out of difficult situations

What's wrong with that type of Sonora. They have, if well maintained, a warm sound. Not that hard tembre what the recent produced bassoons have today

Ein kleines Juwel eines ansonsten eher durchschnittlichen Komponisten. In einer genialen Interpretation! Kein Vergleich mit jeder Cello-Version!

Why do composers bother with string quartets and symphonies when the bassoon quartet is so awesome. I don't think I'd see the need to write for anything else if I could guarantee bassoon playing of this quality.

Bravo!.

I am wondering where Sarunas took breaths...I couldn't hear any. This is an amazing performance of this piece. I am playing 1st on the first movement this weekend and I wish I sounded as good as Sarunas. Please tell him how great he sounds, as well as all of you! Thank you for the inspiration.

Thanks a lot! The breaths are not very audible because the minidisc recorder was several meters away. To be honest, this concert was one of the best we have ever played. We had a tour (Baltic States + Sweden + Norway) and we were rehearsing up to 6 hours a day before this tour. So everyone was in top shape, and even our timbres got more similar. Šarūnas really sounded amazing and what's even more surprising - he was playing a trashed old Sonora bassoon :)
