Very cool to hear a well-tread piece be recontextualized. Makes it very engaging. This also exhibits the French knack for harmony the way he’s able to carve out so many additional voices that don’t trip over the originals of Vivaldi’s. Super neat.

Exactly. Most fine music aficionados only know Mozart's 'Laudate Dominum'. It's an added delight to know that Corrette used Vivaldi's 'Spring' from the 'Four Seasons' for his inspiration.

"old fashioned" is a highly overrated term these days. It also stigmatizes. No need for that. Corrette was an excellent craftsman, his brilliant arrangement of Vivaldi's primavera gives ample proof of that assertion.

It's not rare for French composers to use Italian melodies. When a copied composition was very similar, they didn't sign it. It was a way to morally respect the copyright. An example is the -French national hymn, almost identical to Giovanni Battista Viotti' s - Tema e variazioni in do maggiore (best known as "La Marseillaise"). Viotti composed it in 1781, just eleven years before that "La Marseillaise" was created by Claude De Lisle - who never signed the score as usual. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKnGkKqmmLV5orMsi=5caCh1VAgYLx32wl In 1792, when De Lisle changed the original score into "La Marseillaise" and gave it to the major of Strasbourg, Viotti was in England to escape the revolutionaries, because musician at the court of the queen Marie Antoinette. He died in London in 1824.

If this really is written in 1770 it was extremely old fashioned and out of date. The style would fit better for Bach or Händel 40-50 years earlier.
@bartjebartmans2 жыл бұрын
Corrette worked for conservative churches. His style made him good money. Composers needed to survive like everybody else, and he knew how to. That his style was out of vogue by 1770 is a no brainer. But, time periods aside, he was an excellent composer and arranger. That should suffice.
@olavtryggvason11942 жыл бұрын
@@bartjebartmans I have no intention to question Correttes musical skills. I just compared in mind what Haydn and the only 14 year old Mozart did at the same time. Quite a number of their works were also produced for the catholic service. Mozarts employer was archbishop.
@bartjebartmans2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what Corrette has to do with Mozart and Haydn. He lived in totally different country and circumstances.
@olavtryggvason11942 жыл бұрын
@@bartjebartmans Of course, but the development of new styles crossed the borderlines also at that time, often surprisingly quickly in spite of the slow communications in old times.
@olavtryggvason11942 жыл бұрын
@@bartjebartmans But you can compare to the contemporary composer Johann Schobert, living in Paris 1761-1767. His style was much more modern than Correttes, and he also influenced Mozart.
