Nearly note perfect in front of an audience. Not just note perfect but the control of texture, balance, and overall vision. Gaht dayum.

I love the tempo he uses in Scarbo. That really show one doesn't need to be the fastest ever to get the feeling right
@djmotise2 жыл бұрын
I'm so tired of hearing all the fastest possible Scarbo performances. Ravel never wrote "fast as possible." And most pianists obliterate all of his pp and ppp markings. Thank you for your comment.

Wow this rendition is incredible, first time hearing it and I find it to be one of his most amazing recording

Michelangeli is a very rigorously inventive pianist. His accuracy is amazing. Furthermore, the arpeggios in the first movement, this virtuoso executed marvelously.

The Ondine treatment has such a deep sense of melancholy that was absent in the renditions of the 60s.

Thank you for uploading. We listened to it in awe. Both for the composition and for the fantastic performance of ABM. He was a phenomenal pianist indeed. To play this piece live is unbelievable. ❤️👏🙏

His slightly slower tempo in Scarbo soooo much better and more musical/lyrical.

The best ABM, the color ABM of the seventies! Superlative interpretation! It's a shame he didn't record it with Deutsche Grammphon... but that's fine too! Thanks for sharing! ;-))

He said that Gaspard didn't work in a studio recording, without the living presence of the public. So he never thought of recording it. Nevertheless this rendition from the Tokyo recital was recorded pretty well.

@@alfredofranco In my opinion certain philosophical reasons don't justify certain choices... A studio recording allows for better sound quality, but everyone is free to make the choices they want in life.

Ondine doesn't have the magical atmosphere, exquisite lyricism, swirl, and glowing shimmer of Michelangeli's 1958 recording, but Le gibet and Scarbo are stunning.

Finally, a correct tempo of Ondine. Ravel wrote Lent. But it's still a bit too fast. But so clear. And gorgeous sounding. The fast tempos are not right.

What do we shell say to support the channel if the interpretation is excellent and we just have to keep silent?

Ondine, note perfect as it is, could be more dreamy at the beginning.... (is this blasphemous for a Michelangeli admirer....?) - it sounds like it was a morning performance, wide awake rather than a midnight one....

@@Tom-iv5pw Couple years ago I saw a documentary on Michelangeli. Ashkenazi was prominently featured. I don't speak Italian or Russian, but judging from the context, expressions and body language, Ashkenazi held Michelangeli in the highest esteem
