I've found the Pilot Sport 4Ss to be decent in cold weather (e.g slightly below freezing), but once there's snow/ice all the grip is lost - just to keep in mind!

The Pilot Sport 4S is amazing because the inner half of the tire is made from a harder compound for rain and cold temps. And the outer half of the tire is extreme summer compound.

so was the PSS to be fair. I don't know about harder, but definitely high silica on the inner tread for the reason you say and mileage. To be completely honest most tyres, once warmed up, even if cold outside, tend to perform OK

I went from the pilot sports to the mps4s and the difference was night and day on my M5 competition pack. Went from spinning the real wheels at 120mph+ to gripping in second. Never seen road tyres tame a 600bhp rwd so convincingly. Best upgrade I ever made, apart from going to 750bhp in the summer 😁

For 600 bhp and more power Michelin Sport Cup 2 is better. But only important that you need to know is that Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires don't use when the temperature is low ( cold ).

The issue with these tires and cold weather is not grip its the compound used to make them. Freezing temps can damage the tires due to the compound changes under cold temperatures so just keep that in mind that the tire might not last a long if you use all season.

My main concern driving with PS4S tires in winter temps below -10*C is that the tires will lose traction and slide and also it will damage the tires since they are too cold/brittle. Is that something you've experienced?

@autofanaticcars
@autofanaticcars 2 жыл бұрын
Tire Rack does good testing but they are not driving them daily to compile enough data usually it's a one shot deal and the feedback the staff gets that day is what goes into the results. Also the Tire Rack for liability reasons will never test ZR rated tires in cold winter conditions due to them being a reseller and liable for misleading a consumer I did this test for fun and to prove this tire does work in the winter temps.

Thank you so very much for making this video and putting that fine Shelby through its paces !!! .... Have you done any rain videos with temps falling below 50 to 40 degrees F ? I found that a bit slippery around corners even on normal mode with traction control on. In warm weather the tires work exceptionally well in rain. Below 45 degrees things seem to become noticeably different. And you are right, you become a better driver. Im 58 and a driver had to work to keep any car on the road and each and every car was different, until now with these tires and technology. Track mode, Sport Plus mode are the real deal but the cops hear ya coming from a mile away around here.... Living in Canada (I'm a dually passported individual) during this time of year, we get a lot of night and morning fog and mist. I just bought a 2020 GT Mustang Convertible Perf Pkg 1 (Awesome vehicle T.Y. Ford !) and with these tires and I was reluctant to push it at 40 degree weather until now... Thank you so much for making this video. I put 3500 miles on the car... this month lol. Thank you again... great video...

I’ve driven below freezing temps driving from Idaho to California Bay Area in my brz. The PS4s did a lot better than I would have ever expected them to do given the fact that they are summer tires. Although I did notice a higher amount of wear on them I think it was because I also made sure to keep them as warm as I could by slightly weaving large and right on long straights.

Drove up to snow cap local summit. A good 30 miles up from 100ft above sea level to 4300ft. Top 300-500 feet had a snow, a few inches at the top. It had snowed overnight by that afternoon it was 50*+, tires were warmed by then but not hot. Once I got to the slush and icy road it was slipping and sliding all over. Had to go about 15mph to not slip. Tires were newish.

In your opinion, what is the best all season tire for the GT350?
@motorgearhead
@motorgearhead 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you are aware but temps below 20°F apparently can damage these tires if they are mounted and supporting the weight of a vehicle. See below: Internal construction of the Pilot Sport 4S features twin steel belts reinforced by a spirally wound hybrid reinforcement. This hybrid Aramid and nylon belt offers a lightweight, high-strength reinforcement above the steel belts to enhance high-speed handling, wear and durability. Specifically tuning the application of the cord filament provides Michelin engineers the ability to balance tension and strength, and a single-ply, polyester cord casing balances trade-offs between ride quality and responsive handling. Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

The Pilot Sport 4S is BY FAR the best tire I have ever put on my cars! While I am not in the habit of driving on summer tires when temps are in the 20s, it is good to know you can do it in a pinch with the 4S and there is no need to panic. Perhaps I was a little hasty when switching over to my Blizzaks (around Thanksgiving). Did you alter your tire pressures when driving the PS4S in the cold weather? As good as the PSS was, the PS4S is even better! It will be interesting see if the tread life is any longer than the PSS. Having said that, tread life is NOT the primary reason for using these tires, performance and safety is!

I have a Subaru Legacy with the flat 6 cly it come with better handling springs and roll bar vs the standard flat 4, the car originally had Bridgestone's Trunza EL400s they were complete garbage tire. Once I went with Michelin Pilots A/S 3, what a world of difference. One thing I notice on the Pilots are they are very sensitive to tire pressure adjustments, my Legacy calls for 33 psi in the front and 32 in the rear and I have found that going 2 psi over that seems to be the best for at least my car.

Anyone have any mileage on their 4S tires? I do have about 5000 miles on mine, and have lots of tread and the tires are very odd......... They can grip like crazy and I have a hard time making them spin with my 668 ft lbs of torque and 577+ hp, on NEW pavement, but on old pavement that appears to have more wear on it the tires can act like they are on ice, they can slide around with 1/5 throttle and I find it dangerous.. I think the rubber compound is a wrong formula for all pavement types, they are good on black asphalt that is new, or on a racetrack... But for every day driving you can go from great traction to 20% traction on 2 different roads.

Big difference in noise and grip depending on pavement. I drive Audi S5 (awd) and they can skid if I punch it while turning but most people never drive like that. At least they don’t squeal like the cheap Contis.

When Michelin says the tires will not function properly below 40 degrees, believe them. My ‘12 Caddie CTS-V on the original tires scared the you know what out of me, I was doing maybe 69-70 nailed it and slid 2 lanes on the approach road to the DC Beltway in Virginia, I now run their all season tires and just have to realize my cornering and back road handling capabilities are definitely diminished, oh well

Dunlops are horrible tires, i never liked one in 30 years trying them, this new P4S is literally like contact cemented to the pavement its insane how good they are in all conditions this was just a test and boy did it surprise me because the Pilot Super Sports or any other Summer tire would have sent me off the road in this test drive. If you have the dough in the spring I highly suggest you put there on your WRX it will blow your mind,

Hey guys just fitted my 17 R8 v10 plus with these. Loving them but have only been driving on days that are in the 45 plus weather range. Thing is I live in Toronto and most days the weather is below 40. I keep getting told by people that these tires will crack in the winter. I’ve had Pirellis on all my cars and never had one crack ever on me regardless of weather. Just curious if anyone knows if these Michelin’s are more sensitive or if people were just talking theoretical to me. Obviously smarter to have winters and I agree, but I drive this car on dry sunny days only in the winter. Any insight would be appreciated. Btw these tires are insane in terms of grip.

Hey arent you comparing older used PSS to brand new PS4S? Brand new will always be more complaint . I ask because im running PSS but i too noticed they have become harder and slip when you get on it 50% worn. Im in LA and its garaged all the time but still the tires just get older and harder in age... would be good to know what the PS4S fairs at 50% used...
@autofanaticcars
@autofanaticcars 7 жыл бұрын
Not really i drive brand new cars each week with PSS, the P4S is a far better tire in every category and this last test even proves that below recommended temps it still sticks better than every other tire in the category. Consider upgrading if you decide to go with new wheels or wait for the OEM sizes to eventually come out for the P4S

FYI, the fastest way to warm up a modern car is to drive it moderately until it fully warms up. Excessive idling a cold engine wastes gas, causes more wear on the motor, dilutes the oil with gasoline. Idling the motor at startup warms the coolant & oil, but the trans, rear axle, brakes, suspension, etc are still cold which drives the computers crazy. I've seen dozens of cars suffer early engine failure due to repeated, extended cold idling. I just replaced the MPSS summer tires on my 16 Stingray w/ MPS A/S3+ all season tires. These tires can be tracked but will cost you some time compared to the MPSS's. Almost went with the 4S's, but wanted to be able to drives in slushy, light snowy weather. I don't think the 4S's will compare favorably in traction challenged situations like snow, slush, etc. All that said, the 4S's are light years better in the cold than the MPSS or the Cup 2's.

I know you put this up a month ago mate but for what it's worth I have been running a full set of these on my E46 M3 since they came out. On second set now, but I could not believe how good these things were when I got caught in the snow storm "beast from the east" we had here earlier this year. I managed to get up some hills without having to turn off the DSC like we are meant to in snow, and that was when it was at least 5 inches thick! Yes it did get sideways (deliberately, just to piss the missus off) but as ever the car was just as predicatable and controlling the slides was a breeze. To be honest we just don't have enough of extreme bad weather here in the UK to justify putting on winter tyres for the full season. Yes we get a few days here and there of ice/snow, but they are nowhere near long enough. That storm was definitely a freak event, can't see it happening again soon. Our winters seem to be getting milder and wetter, which is perfect for these tyres. Trust me mate, if you haven't already, just get them. An all year round performer, I cannot rate them enough for street use. Yet to see a bad review for these yet. Don't need to say anymore as I'd end up looking like I worked for michelin! lol

I just bought a manual 2019 Hyundai Veloster Ultimate Turbo, one step under the N. My car came with these tires. We had a snowmageddon here in St. Louis this past weekend and with just a little bit of snow on the ground I was sliding everywhere. I found out that evening that these tires are summer tires and are not supposed to be used under 40° or in snow, which the dealership did not tell me. I'm buying all season tires today for the winter until spring.
