I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. kzbin.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

I've got 2 970r's with tweels and I like them but I don't love them. The ride is a bit better and the traction is def better but when cut sideways on steep hills the deck has a tendency to cut lower on the downhill side. When running over drain fields you must slow down a bit due to the fact that the tweels flex so much it's like the g force with speed doesn't let the tire flex back into normal operating height....hope that makes sense. Just my two cents to all who may be curious. Bottom line is that I personally will keep them on future mowers but I have had to learn how adjust to the difference. Good luck guys.

Last year, I bought a new Z935M Zero Turn and after 3 flats in less than a year, I bought these Michelin wheels and tires and I only wish I would've not wasted time with the regular tires. They tires are awesome and are well worth the money.
@JesusIsaFlatEarther7 жыл бұрын
Shank 06, in this video, he mentioned the Tweels will still tear up the turf. But it was mentioned in conjunction with mowing on hills. What about when turning on flat areas? I use my mower on nice yards and I'm constantly putting divots in the grass. So are the Tweels act the same, worse or better then pneumatic tires? Thanks
@jdtractor75257 жыл бұрын
If you turn without keeping both wheels moving, yes, they can cause damage. Just got to be mindful of what you're doing I guess.
@anthonyclt7 жыл бұрын
JD's response is 100% correct. I purchased a 930M w/ Tweels a) for comfort, b) to avoid flats, and c) I was under the impression that the tweels would help me avoid tearing up the turf. Well, the Tweels are definitely super comfortable, and I don't have to worry about flats. HOWEVER, in my experience, there was zero advantage when it came to turf marks. The only way to avoid them is, like JD says, keep both wheels moving and plan your turns accordingly. PS: I was looking at purchasing a Walker or Exmark Navigator b/c I heard you didn't have the same issues with turf marks w/ those units/models. Nonsense. Tested both and you still have the same issue if you don't turn properly. FYI.

Thanks for the review. One note that might help someone prior to purchasing a new ZTrak - the Tweels are NOT compatible with the MCS (bagger systems). I purchased a Z930M w/ Tweels and loved it/them. Super comfortable, zero complaints. However, when my DFS MCS arrived I was notified that I would have to swap the Tweels for traditional pneumatic wheels. I was pretty steamed. This wasn't noted on the website or on the ZTrak brochure at the dealership - so I was not happy. We confirmed this info w/ John Deere corporate support and, reluctantly, I swapped the tires out. Interestingly, the extra weight from the MCS and the front weights actually made the mower w/ pneumatic tires feel exactly like the Tweels - so I'm back to being happy. Anyhow, if you don't need an MCS - GET THE TWEELS. They are worth the price.

I have a Z950R and luckily my dealer caught this one for me as I was considering tweels. Not sure if this link will work or not but near the bottom of this page there is a chart that list specs for the Tweels. One of them is the max load is 750lbs. www.deere.com/en/landscaping-grounds-care/tweel/ Physically I think they will fit fine but I am pretty sure the weight limit is the problem. What you have to run for suitcase weights differs a bit based on machine and deck but my Z950R with the 60" deck takes a fully loaded weight rack with 252lbs. I mainly use my collection system for leaves in the spring and fall. They are not as wet and heavy as grass clippings but I would imagine with a full hopper of grass clippings, operator weight and some of the weight from the suitcase weights would transfer to the back wheels when going up hills. I would imagine you would blow past that 750LBS capacity pretty quick. Also on that page right below the chart it does state the following: "*Approved for John Deere ZTrak Z900 B, E, M, or R Series gas powered zero-turn mowers equipped with 54", 60" or 72" decks. Not recommended for use with Material Collection Systems." So it is on their website but I agree that I don't think it is in the configuration part of the website.
@jdtractor75257 жыл бұрын
I agree, the tweels are great. I had no Idea about the MCS not being compatible with them. I know the tweels are also not available on the Z997R because of the weight issues.
@anthonyclt7 жыл бұрын
Here's a little more background on my adventures w/ the Tweels. When the MCS unit came in and the guys at my local dealer caught the note in the instructions. You are absolutely correct about the "*Note" on the page you shared. The problem - the probability that a prospective customer would catch that is super slim. (I was reading everything I could about the 930, 930EFI, 950, 960... Rs and Non-Rs, etc. And the entire time I was conditioned to MCS and DFS-MCS, not "Material Collection Systems" - though it's obvious MCS stands for Material Collection System. Bottom line: Every sales person should be trained that the MCSs are not supported on units w/ Tweels - and there should be a short form/waiver that buyers can sign to acknowledge the Tweels limitations/restrictions so they know they might need to purchase pneumatics if they are going to use an MCS or attempt to carry a large load in a trailer (for example). Here's the interesting thing. While we, my salesman and I, were researching the situation, he contacted his tech rep at Deere here in NC. The tech said the issue was not weight related; that the MCS, even full, wouldn't create problems with the Tweels - but how the additional weight would affect the trans/motors. That sort of makes sense - the flex in the Tweels could create more strain on the motors when cutting over a bumpy surface. Regardless, he said they were still testing (confirming the note on the tech notice posted Feb 2017) the Tweels but, at this time, could not recommend their use. (In other words, use at your own risk - and if it breaks, don't expect us to pay for it.) Last, I did offer to "test" the Tweels w/ the DFS-MCS for them. No response as of yet. But, like i said, I now have the pneumatics and love the DFS-MCS (when the grass is dry).

As for the blades getting dull on your mower, I just purchased a Cub Cadet with the Kawasaki engine on it since my John Deere mower have one on it also. The grass when it is very tall does not mow down perfectly so you have to go over the lawn twice to get a perfect cut. As for the power, I was told to run the mower at full power also when mowing, and it works fine. I saw the new mowers and love the new features, but due to my budget, I could not afford another John Deere right now, so I got the Cub Cadet instead since it also had features I loved, except for the tires on the rear which is smaller than my John Deere Z445.

I have a Z950R. You were talking about the "Deluxe Controls" and how you like to operate your machine with your hands lower on the controls. You can still do this on the "R" models. It isn't like you are using those buttons all the time. One is for the hydrostatic deck lift (there is no manual foot control). That is the button I use the most. The other kills the PTO. Notice I said kills not operates. If you turn off the PTO with the control stick button, to start it back up you have to go back to the main control panel and turn off the PTO Switch (Rocker or Plunger) and turn it back on. All the button does is trip the safety circuit which kills the PTO like when you set the parking brake. For me I went with the R because I have the DFS Collection System and I wanted power deck lift. I don't run it all the time and with the manual deck lift on the B/E/M versions you have to adjust the spring assist when you add or remove the PowerFlow head. Not a big deal if you always ran a collection system or never ran one but when I go back and forth it would have been more messing around. Of course the R has the foot operated parking brake. I agree with your comment than it is kind of tricky to operate. The good is if you get on and pull the control sticks in with the parking brake still set, you can release it without moving the sticks out of the way. The bad is sometimes it releases right away, other times I have to kick it a few times to get it to release. Maybe if I was mowing commercially I would use it more and become used to it. This machine is my residential mower so it sees use once every week or two. Also on the Tweels. I didn't go with them for a couple reasons. The main one is they are not compatible when you have the DFS Collection system. I think it is a weight issue. I have to run 252# in suitcase weights plus the weight of a hopper full of wet grass clippings, and the operator would likely push the tire load past the 750lbs max rating. The other reason is I just cut my yard so not much risk of nails, broken glass and such that a commercial operator doesn't have control over. If I puncture a tire and am down for a few days it doesn't matter. My machine's operational status doesn't impact my income. When it comes time to replace the tires, tires are cheap. A tire change because of worn tires with Tweels will run about $1000. If I was a commercial operator and trading machines every two years and not running a collection system I would probably go with it. Totally makes sense. It didn't in my case. They do look cool though.

These days, Kawasaki is the only small gas engine I could trust if buying new. My X570 has a Kawasaki FS730V in it, same engine you have except it's 24 HP. It's a little cold blooded, but I run it for long hours at a time and it doesn't seem to give me any trouble. People complain that Kawasaki isn't American and that you should buy Kohler or Briggs, but the truth is Kawasaki is one of the most American small engine manufacturers out there and they actually build their engines to last a long time. That's why JD uses mostly Kawasaki and not Kohler or Briggs anymore, aside from some of the lower-end models. Deere cuts very few corners when it comes to these commercial grade machines. I always try to engage my PTO at an idle and then move it up to wide open. It won't really hurt the clutch but it will wear belts out quicker. But my FS730V takes a long time to really warm up so sometimes it will stall out when I engage the PTO, even at half throttle. Sorry for the long-winded post but I feel the need to touch on this subject for any naysayers who might come across this. Great review video!

Another thing to mention. Looks like you are running the standard High Lift Blades still. I have those for the collection system in the fall but the rest of the year I have been running Oregon G6 Gator Blades. If you get a set watch out a bit because it will change your HOC a bit because the bend profile is different. You could use the deck level gauge and dial it back in or just adjust your HOC 1/4" higher or lower and remember it isn't quite dialed in. As you pointed out that is very easy to do. I also picked up a set of John Deere's "Gator Blades" which the dealer called Predator blades I think. They work but the G6 has a larger area which is sharpened and they seem to perform better.
@wh80857 жыл бұрын
David Senn , What mower are you running those G6 Gators on ? I've never used them so I can't compare but I run the standard stock JD blades on my Z445 and the cut is incredible. My customers just ooohh and aahh about how nice the cut is . The only trick , as with any mower and blades , is to keep them sharp and the deck clean . Ah, I just saw on further down in the comments you are running the 950R . Nice machine. I'm planning to pick up a new machine this year and am torn which way to go. My Exmark dealer is 10 miles away and my Deere dealer is 25 miles away . I do love the Deeres but I know the Xseries Lazer Z will do just as good a job. It's a toss up.

Make sure you have a steady income, and finance the mower. I used John Deere financial and it is really reasonable.

Shouldn't be engaging/disengaging deck at WOT. You'll wear the clutch/brake out prematurely. Engage as close to idle as possible and disengage at absolute idle so you don't wear the blade brake (that stops the blades for safety) out prematurely. Why would it make sense to do it any other way? Mechanic's just blowing your question off....trust me.

RE: Throttle position when engaging blades. Prior to purchasing my 930 I had always been told to engage my deck/blades at a low throttle position (and usually when not moving). In fact, that's exactly what I was instructed to do with my Exmark and Husqvarna. When researching for a recent purchase I was also instructed to engage blades at no higher than 1/2 throttle by the local Kubota dealer. In fact, low throttle was recommended. HOWEVER, when taking a Z930M for a test drive/cut, I was instructed to engage blades at full-throttle. Apparently John Deere commercial ZTraks have something called a "soft clutch", or something like that. Anyhow, the first time I engaged the blades (at full-throttle) you could definitely tell something was preventing the clutch from immediately engaging - it was very smooth. Prior to purchasing I did contact several other dealers just to make sure that info was correct - and all three (two in NC, one in CO - just for the hell of it) told me the same thing. So, if this information is incorrect, it's being perpetuated by Deere dealers in different parts of the country. Anyhow, bought a Z930M (non-MOD deck). 24 hours later, couldn't be happier.
@StanWilhite7 жыл бұрын
Nope, my mistake, didn't know these mowers had a "slow engage" clutch. That's great....much better on belts/pulleys!
@jdtractor75257 жыл бұрын
Yeah, different brands have different instructions, and it creates confusion. I'll be making a video to address clutch engage/disengage.

U always mowe full throttle better blade speed doesn’t lug the motor down trans etc
@robertkeel33365 жыл бұрын
A lot of manufacturers recommend turning the blades on at half throttle and the once the blades engage you go to full throttle. Then when you go to turn them off you go back to half throttle and the disengage the blades. JD has it setup different for some reason.

Couldn't you get duel fuel tanks on that mower
@jdtractor75257 жыл бұрын
not that I know of
@anthonyclt7 жыл бұрын
You are correct. For some reason I think it has a duel tank, but you only fill on one side. I say this because there is no way I can see the one side holding 11/12 gal. To get the same capacity on the Husq and Exmark you have to use duel tanks.

To be honest they are useful not to get a flat but unless you run the no flat front wheels then they tweels are useless really but that's not your case here. Kawasaki motor all the way man. Only way to go
@jaxturner72886 жыл бұрын
hilham 89 The rears are much more likely to get punctured, saying they are “useless “ without matching fronts is moronic. The fronts are available as a solid rubber unit and if the rears leak down then you mow, you risk damage to the hydro units. So the rears are critical compared to the fronts, about the opposite of your “useless “.

It's funny to listen to a homeowner do a mower review, that being said it looks like a nice machine for homeowner use. Commercial use cutting 200 homes weekly on avg would be a different story.

These wheels are a waste of money, because of how they're built you'll slide on a average slope, they wear fast, they break off in pieces, the tweel part with crack, they say they'll last 3 times as long, my John Deere z920m. 2016 just had it's original wheels replaced, running 150 residential and 15 large commercial accounts. Don't buy into the hype of these junk $1200 wheels
@ronwilder69294 жыл бұрын
Dc Lawn Services inc, Just bought a brand new z930m, I almost upgraded to the tweel. I think they look really cool and looking at the design they should hold better. Just using the mower on my residence I couldn’t justify paying that much. Doesn’t sound cost effective for commercial either.
