i am german and the american obsession with re-enacting slavery is so weird to me. we learn about the holocaust extensively, obviously in history and also politics, but also in creative ways in other classes, by reading appropriate fictional books in german class, or performing appropriate plays in theater club or singing appropriate songs in music class, or interpreting appropriate paintings about the holocast in art class....but making kids pretend they are slaves and teachers act as slave masters...SO weird. also, i REALLY hope that they did not ask black kids to take the slave roles.

She shared parts of the thesis in the Sunday paper. I am unsure what their definition was a racist back then but she clearly knew the assignment and seemed have done well. She just did not follow their mythical white supremicist following of denigrating Black folks. She told the Black as taught to her by her Grandma I believe. I often think of her she lived in the Rufus King area which was just 2 blocks up from where I lived. Look into foundations that relate to your daughter’s disability and see if they have any advice or know of any lawyers that would be willing to help either pro bono or for reduced costs. Additionally, don’t just seek out one attorney. Fees vary from attorney to attorney based on a number of different factors, so while one might want a $10,000 retainer fee, another may not even make you pay unless you win. I’d personally suggest calling around until you exhaust your options, and you can also ask about payment plans. Again, it really just depends on the lawyer. You can also explain your situation to them. For example, when my mother divorced my abusive father following a 911 call, she found a great lawyer who was among the top in his field but he normally charged a very high rate. After hearing our situation (I’m also chronically ill/disabled due to a progressive disease and rely on my mother as my caretaker, making her unable to work due to caring for me), he told her he wanted to give her a discount on his rates, and after things reached a certain point in the divorce and he got to know her better, he even decided that he wasn’t going to continue charging her for his services. Some lawyers really do care, so it certainly doesn’t hurt to explain your situation and your finances and see if they are at all willing to work with you. So I would definitely suggest calling around to everyone you can find, and also try reaching out to disability organizations pertaining to your daughter’s disability and situation. If all else fails, contacting your local news networks may not also be a bad idea if you’re desperate for help. I know my local news stations do investigative stories all the time pertaining to local school districts treating students unfairly or violating their rights. I totally understand what you are currently going through though. I also had a lot of trouble with administration and staff not adhering to accommodations and completely and purposefully going against doctor orders back when I was in school. There were many situations where we should have sued (and would have definitely won with the insane amount of solid proof of their repeated wrongdoing and legal violations), but my mother was also worried about whether or not that would make things even more difficult for me, as they had already made me a target and certain administration and certain staff continually sought to harass me and be verbally abusive (and I was an extremely good student, never once got in trouble or was disrespectful, was one of the top students in the school, was in the gifted program, and always scored in the highest range of above average on standardized tests. Even with as much school as I missed every year due to my disease, I always made sure all of my work got done and I never once fell behind). My parents ultimately just decided to move so I could go to a different school, which was a much better environment, but I know that’s not possible for everyone. It’s horrible that any school has the power to deny a student their legal right to learn in an accessible environment, and to deny them federally mandated disability accommodations, leaving the parents and their child to fend for themselves when things go wrong. It’s beyond frustrating and emotionally and mentally draining on both the parents and the child, and I’m so sorry that you are currently having to go through this. I pray that things get better for you and your daughter, and I pray that you are able to find someone to help you. God bless! 💕🌻

Anytime there are parents actively involved in the education of their children, ask questions, make unannounced visits to the school, etc., they are targeted, because what the educational establishment (system) does not want is parent involvement and its authority questioned as in bad treatment of students and bias made by the school, certain teachers, administrators, and others. There are lots of parents who do not avail themselves to the teachers, parent-teacher conferences, and so on, and school administrators want to keep it that way. When there are engaged parents it is a problem and they are maligned even labeled trouble makers to discredit them as in the case of the Robinson's.

@@johnsilver6316 from the interview, there's no indication the school was racist. the ONLY specific they gave was using the word "plantation" and not providing any context around it. at some point in the past, they said they did that Underground Railroad thing which is sketchy at best but they don't do it anymore. I sent 3 of my kids to a very strict and sometimes unreasonable private school for it's academics. Believe me, this school won't hurt for students if it's truly elite. We don't send our kids to private for morals. We send them to get a better education and have a good chance to get into elite colleges.

Your observation is always the case, when the race you are observing, isn't yours. If you think white teachers running around a dark school in an attempt to catch the kids who were acting like slaves.. ..you and your white won't be bothered by that at all, dear!! Not one bit. That's not a conversation your kids will feel concerned enough about to bring to you. However, that's scenario is a nightmare for a black child....I need you to get a clue. I can really relate to their children’s’ situation because of a similar experience I had as a child. When I was in fifth grade I was attending a new charter school in my home town. I have an autoimmune disease and was often absent from class because of illness but I worked really hard to keep up on my schoolwork on my own and had good grades but the principal for some reason decided she didn’t like me or my family. I don’t know what I did, I was a good student, a little shy but never got in any trouble, I was just sick. When my parents tried to have a discussion with the principal and my teacher about getting my school work for me to catch up on she avoided them and just decided to expel me instead and she didn’t even tell them directly. She went through me. She literally pulled me; a tiny, shy and sick 11 year old girl out of class and told me I wouldn’t be attending this school anymore and to tell my parents. It was so out of the blue and unexpected. She was also very cruel to me. It left me feeling like I was a bad kid and had done something wrong just because I was sick. It was really hard. Thankfully the school I transferred to was amazing and they really took me under their wing and helped me, but I’ll never forget the feeling of worthlessness I had when my principal whom I looked up to and liked a lot said that to me and how hard it was leaving my friends and starting a a whole new school half way through the year. So I really feel for this family and I’m sorry that the kids have to go through this. I didn’t experience any racial bias though and really can’t imagine how awful that must be on top of being expelled for no reason. Those poor kids. By the way, the principal that expelled me was later fired because of all the problems she caused and eventually the entire school I was kicked out of shut down and everyone knew it was that principal’s fault. She ran that place straight into the ground. I really hope this family can find some justice after what they have been though. Note: Thanks for all the likes and kind responses everybody. Really means a lot. 🤍🤍🤍🤍

2 sides to every story April 12th 2021 Hi Steve, Craig and I had some time to talk and reflect on the conversation you and I had on Friday. Craig does not think it is necessary to have another meeting with you. You were very clear thatvyou have the option to not allow _____ to return in the fall because teachers think I'm a "watchdog" and "fear for their jobs." We'd like you to put I writing the reason you are dismissing our family from USM after you promised to hold a seat for______ in 6th grade. April 14th 2021 Dear Kelly, Thank you for your message. As you know, USM views the parents of Its students to be vital partners in the school's mission to provide an exceptional education to its students and ensure a positive learning environment. While USM is committed to seeking, valuing, and listening to parents' perspectives and concerns regarding their children and the school, in turn it expects parents to respect the expertise and professionalism of the schools faculty and administrators, and staff and seek collaborative solutions to problems. So too, USM expects all members of its community, including parents, to relate to one another with respect, trust, honesty, fairness, and kindness. Unfortunately, over the course of this school year, you have not fulfilled the foregoing commitments as a partner to USM and its MIDDLE SCHOOL teachers and administrators. Despite our continued efforts and requests, you continue to directly engage with USMs 5th grade teachers and administrators in a manner that is not consistent with the school's Common Trust and Core Values---- including numerous emails, texts, and conversations that are disrespectful and deflating. These communications not only demonstrate a breakdown in your trust of and respect for USMs Middle School educators, but have also adversely impacted the Middle School educational environment, including the ability of our teachers and administrators to successfully provide vital services to our schools. As provided in our handbook: The operation and administration of U of Ms is predicated upon the mutual cooperation of the entire USM community. Accordingly, parents of students are expected to cooperate with the administration of the school, including but not limited to the Board of Trustees, the Head and Assistant Head of School, and the administrators in charge of various departments in the event that a parent refuses to cooperate reasonably, the Head of School has the right to take such action as s(he) deems appropriate, including but not limited to the dismissal of the student. Because we have concluded that your actions toward the Middle School TEAM over the past year did not comport with our Parent-School Partnership Common Trust and Handbook, we respectfully request that you locate another school for ____ to continue his education next year. Thank you, Steve Hancock Head of School

It's not necessarily so. Especially the publicly funded charter schools. No evidence kids do better on the whole based on scientifically designed studies. Thank you so much Craig and Kelly for bringing University School Of Milwaukee and their racial and socio-economic bias to light. This is the first time sharing publicly my experience with a Catholic school and racism. My oldest son attended a Catholic school in Los Angeles and was in the 2nd grade. My husband Hispanic and me African American. About 2 months into the school year we get a call at our place of business from a Priest. He asked that my husband and I stop by to see him before picking up our son. To make a long story short when we arrived at his office he told my husband and I...."that the school had reached its limit for minority children enrollment"...he further went on to explain that there were many Vietnamese children that attended the school and they made up a big percent of the minorities. He went onto to say that my son was no longer welcomed at the school and if we repeated what he told us he would deny it. I was speechless that a Priest could be so heartless and racist at the same time. I remembered a few days earlier my husband went to pick up our son from school. He said when he arrived at the school that our son ran up to him and was so upset. When my husband asked my son why he was upset he said another student who was white told him that his mother said he couldn't play with my son because his hair was different. My husband and I put 2 and 2 together and realize this parent was probably the one who confronted the Priest about asking us to withdraw our son from the school. I remember feeling so helpless because here my 7 year old was experiencing racism at such a young age and we as his parents couldn't protect him. We had the difficult talk with our baby about racism and transferred him to another school. What we didn't have was Social Media...Twitter, KZbin, etc...to share our experience with other parents...the good news is the Catholic school is closed.

The only reason why these parents ran to GMA is because of who they are related to and if they get their story out first people will be naive enough to assume that they are innocent.. what is happening is that these schools have to deal with a lot with parents that always threatened to sue if you don't bow down to what they want you to do and that's exactly what it sounds like here. The school has the records and documentation to show how these plans are conducting themselves and rather than deal with these knucklehead parents they'll remove their children out of the school. The school itself has the same make up. It's a very very long winding road and once you arrive the grounds open up just like an actual university setting. They have 1 main building and for each subject starting in junior high they have a separate building for the subject that is being taught. Literally all the teachers are Doctors of something. Tuition ranges from Kindergarten - 1st grade 19k annually. As you go up in grades the tuition tiers. By the time one makes it to 12th grade tuition is $30k a year. This school has a long history of being very biased towards kids of color but parents continue to send their kids because of the potential it could bring them. Now the Robinsons have people reaching out to them sharing their horrible experience there as well but were to afraid call them out or they were expelled as well. I recall in the newspaper around 15 or years ago where a neighborhood girl was expelled because they felt her paper was racist as she did the required assignment on Black History but told the story as it was told from her grandparents and not the untruth story being taught in school. I think that school has barked up the right tree this time. This may be turning into a class-action lawsuit. I always say, it's all about timing.

In rightwing circles they like to pretend that blacks are now on the "planation" of the Democratic party. It will not have been in the context of covering slavery. The kids were 9 and 11 at the time the parents heard more of the curriculum. They also did the underground railroad reenactement (and likely turned it into a circus). So we can savely assume, that there was some bad judgement regarding that word as well.

And not send your children to an all black school in Chicago ? Is the schools to black for ya. I got a great idea why don't you go bitch to Nancy polosi and ask her what she thinks about parents standing up against schools. Is it only white people called terrorist when they do it. Talking about hypocrisy. Let me give you some perspective on picking veggies in the hot sun. My mother was a Share cropper picker and she dragged me down the long rows as she filled bags. Wait forgot to tell you my parents are white. My father was born in 1908. And as a child i heard black grand parents teach their grandchildren to stare down white kids so they will never forget the past. Just like Obama did in the last debate with Romney. Didn't think I'd catch that did ya. And a private WoKE school is doing the same and you. And you have a problem with it. Talking about the worst type of hypocrisy. And you want to sue them for being private and kicking their children out. How does a WokE white hating teacher like your self not in Chicago public schools bitching about the way white children are tought there? Wait there arnt any right. Imagine that.

A smoking gun would be something more like implicatory testimony from multiple first hand witnesses. Complaint of a crime is the bare minimum you must convey when filing suit. If the issue is simply different opinions of teaching style or curriculum, then a private school has the absolute right to matriculate or expel any students they choose, for basically any reason. Of course this is the law, so there will always be exceptions but an exception in a situation as described by the complainants would need to be criminal in nature to file suit against a private school. And so far they’ve conveyed no such crimes or even any events of wrongdoing or injury.

One of the reasons private schools are successful is that everyone is moving in the same direction. Parents who want to send their kids to a private school need to learn about the school and see if the school’s value system lines up with theirs. My daughter had an experience at her school pre pandemic. It was just before the end of the school year and the exercise in the class was for the kids to share what they were doing for the summer vacation. She said most of the kids were either going to NC or SC a few to FL , one or two to Jamaica and most of the class was just staying home. My daughter told the class that she was going to England, Iceland and France. She was shocked when the teacher said to her that she was not being honest. It disturbed her and she came home to ask why would she think l am lying, is it because she thinks we cannot afford an expensive vacation. I have exposed my kids to yearly international travel from the time they were very young. I was going to the school to address it with the teacher but my daughter insisted its not that serious. She ensure she posted photos on social media so her classmates can see. This incident just stuck with me.

@@anonymoususer4376 honestly we don’t know the full story, mainly because this is an ongoing lawsuit. They can’t say anything about the situation. But let’s be realistic here, kicking out the students just because you didn’t like how the parents reacted to your teachings is just overall petty AF. But it’s also a sign that the parents are right, and the school is trying to protect itself from radical changes…at least that’s how they consider it. So it just wouldn’t be surprising if this rich and mainly white school has a history of racism.

@@johnsilver6316 It's the parents who are at fault but that's how private schools works. Their kids seemed like model students and they'll suffer because of what mom and dad did. It's a PRIVATE school. I've sent all 3 of my kids to private. You don't have the right to dictate curriculum. They'll be courteous at first but if you push it, they'll kick your kids out. I've seen kids kicked out for much less. You don't get extra say if you're "famous" unless you're a big donor. If you want a say, send your kids to public school where they have school boards. I sent my kids to a particular Catholic school because of academics but didn't agree on many situations. But if you want to stay there, you follow the rules. It is sad the children will suffer.

@@terroralabruja It's very much a part of the Social Studies standards. As a professional, my duty is to present the content, provide guidance, create engaging learning experiences and allow students to do their evaluation of the content. My high school students usually do an excellent job drawing their own conclusions. As a black person, I take the same approach when teaching about slavery. I present the unadulterated content and allow them to critically evaluate and draw their own conclusions. At home, I present my opinions about slavery to my son. In the classroom, I allow my students to draw their own conclusions. We do not want any teacher to evaluate for our son. He's capable of doing that on his own. Without a doubt, these were heinous historical events. However, teachers should present the facts and allow students to apply their own values to analyze each. My job is not to inculcate in students what I believe. My job is to help students develop/master skills including the ability to think critically and evaluate information. Respect.
