I’ve been preaching the same for years. The more I’ve developed individual skill sets, the more I realize this knowledge is applicable and can crossover into other new, unexplored fields. Thus, the quicker and easier it is for me to jump into and adapt to new fields. And, from there it just snowballs to where I can look into something new, and realize I already know 60-75% of what’s required, and can learn the remainder as I go, and on and on and on.

Couldn’t agree more. I always taught my son that it’s a waste of a day if you don’t learn something. Doesn’t matter how “small of a thing” but learn “something” every day

Michelle, you are such an inspiration to me. I'm 48 years old and have numerous bleeding and joint issues. The arthritis is so bad in my legs that I was nearly crippled. I started playing with lightsabers about a year and a half ago as a way for me to get moving. I started a new treatment soon after which greatly improved my joint pain. Thanks to the medication coupled with my lightsaber training, I've lost 25lbs; I'm building muscle again; my balance is getting better and I'm actually able to walk without my cane a lot more. Most of all, I'm re-learning how to have fun again and I'm actually getting pretty good at it. In a lot of ways, it saved my life and I thank you for everything that you do. I'd love to share my story with you if you'd like to hear it.

People that comment how this is impractical in a real fight really have no clue about weapons or of the multitudes of angles it can travel. From my FMA standpoint, the weaving and twirling movements help develop fluidity of wrist and arms and are deceptively fast and unexpected to untrained and even trained persons. Most people cannot even fathom that a weapon can travel in such a multitude of paths with tons of variations. On top of it all, martial artists constantly train their body to perform in new positions and new extremes. Learning such a skill as this is no exception to that rule.

@1:45 Them right handed finger spins look cool. Similar reason why companies prefer hiring people with college degrees: it shows that the candidate is capable of learning new stuff. Not to say those without, aren't; because my career is built on a skill i learned outside of college. But the degree is confirmation that sets companies at ease. I don't necessarily agree with this practice, but i understand it. So, as Michelle indicated in her TED Talk, there are secondary benefits to learning a new skill beyond the skill itself. It could be any skill, so why not try staff spinning?! And when you start practicing double hand stuff, you REALLY feel a difference in how your brain operates!

The spinning and fancier movements can actually be useful in a real street fight (so long as you understand when to implement it). The spinning can be used for intimidation and it can be used to offset your opponent’s timing. Escrema and Arnis use this to do both.

Bingo! How many full on metal shredding guitarists are out there. They're not playing Beatles for friends and family. They're not in a band. They're not studio musicians. They're just shredding for the pure pleasure of having put in the effort to learn how to do it, the practice to do it well, and reaping the results of that. Maybe impress a friend or two but most will just play for themselves.

Maybe you might not use it in a ‘real fight’ but I recon it would scare some one off (which has worked for me) or at least get them thinking twice about taking you on and after all that’s one of the major philosophies of most martial arts is to learn the skill with the hope that you’ll never have to use it - at least that’s what I was taught 😃 Beginner mindset opens you up to so much. Being open to learning adapting and changing which is such a useful skill in itself these days is just one example❤️💫

I’m still planning as my hopefully not bucket list but soon to do list is fly to Canada to take a 3 day crash course! No matter how hard I try my brain can’t wrap my head around your moves. I was a figure skater and need in person assistance. I’m dying to learn your skills and I can not grasp it and my friend will watch your vids it and do it in like 5 mins. WTH? I’ve been at it 2 years with your vids. So frustrating I feel like I’m on the short bus😅 If you ever come to LA I’ll beg borrow and steal a Grand $$$ if you do a workshop crash course! You’re so worth it!

Learning the skill, sticking to it long enough to do, hard work, patience, perseverance, dedication, practice, time management, memory and organization, amongst other things,,, yup learning new skill(s), not useful at all. Nope, none of those things are useful in life. You telling it like it is :) That last toss ? Priceless 😂 You're the best.

Great sentiment, Michelle. And this video awesome on several levels at once. I mean, it's got a great message, AND it's delivered while you seemingly spin and toss the...batons?...absent-mindedly. Great visual stimuli and proof you're a pro. How do I know you're a pro? You still have glass in the picture frames behind you. ;-D

My useless skills I learned is to spin a staff and how to break someone else's bones with just my right hand and accurate timing. That second one only helped me once back in 2007. Someone was trying to kill me while I waa visiting DC for the first and last time. Due threw a wild kick and I caught it with my left hand than let my right hand break his ankle with a quick jerk to the right🤣

I know how you can address those who think that staff spinning isn’t useful in a fight. Do a video on striking with the staff. Measure the difference in pressure with a strike where the staff wasnt spinning and then when it is. I can pretty much guarantee that a spinning staff strikes MUCH harder than say a baseball swing.
@-AT-WALKER Жыл бұрын
Okay I dunno about that, the mass is different. Get what you're saying but not so sure I'd take a baseball bat over a spinning staff... not that I'd prefer either

I just think we're so screwed on everything because most seem to think in terms of whether or not we can turn our passions into money. Meanwhile I love learning, but struggle with wanting to use any of it for money. Not even sure why on that one. Also that neck trap vid, you have to be some kind of moron to take that as someone trying to teach defense skills, dear christ. I am very sure at no point in that video did you say it'd be great for defending your knees and ankles. That person feels like they're on some weird problems, but outside of that there are definitely people who like disturbing others when they're finding satisfaction with something. It's their whole jam, all they know, and it's annoying. 😮💨

People who knock learning anything are the same lazy people who excel at nothing in life. Who cares what they think. They are who and where they are for a reason and shall remain sedentary while rendering worthless opinions until the day they die. WHO CARES. Let them live in their miserable bubbles. Meanwhile talented, successful people like MCS carry on business as usual enjoying their fulfilled lives.
