Seems like with VOOM on Royal Caribbean ships, there is enough capacity now to make internet free for the crew. Or at least a certain amount of time per day. I would love to see this change for the crew. The crew works so hard to keep guests like me happy and I feel that it's important for the company the work for to provide a way that isn't cost prohibitive for them to contact their loved ones back home who they may not get to see for several months.

Michelle Tim--a suggestion on how to avoid the "waves mess with the focus." It's not the waves. It's the auto exposure system in the camera. Avoid shooting with a window or the sun at your BACK. Always face the window or the sun or lamp or whatever light is present. If you want to light from behind, you'd better use a flash or light aboard the camera to balance things.

@Ineeee6 жыл бұрын
largol33t1 I really like my cabin. It's small but comfortable. You can decorate the walls and I got a nice blanket for my bed. Had a bunch of pictures and some fairy lights. It is super small, but it felt cozy. When you're used to seeing the guest areas of a ship, crew areas look dull. But that's because in crew areas things are more functional than fancy. I really like working in a Cruise Line. I would've never spent a few hours at the beach in places like Aruba, Antigua or St Thomas had it not been for this job. They're amazing places but I would've never saved up to go there. So I'm super excited about all the places I getting to see for free. True, you don't get a lot of time off, but when you have the right break at the right place it's awesome! It's not for everyone and it IS a lot of work, cause I work around 10 hours a day, but I still like it. (Also, I always get paid my over time and I never have over time over the legal limit)

Quick question: Do the people who live and work below deck get daily direct sunlight or are they downstairs and out of sight unless their work takes them upstairs or customers are away? I mean specifically non-guest-facing staff, such as those who do the laundry and garbage and dish washing, etc. Also, do staff at all levels get staff training and/or extra curriculum training while onboard? For example the non-English speakers being taught English (or the ships main language) when off duty. Do you have to pay for your food and drink while on board, or is it considered part of the job package?
@MichelleTimrox8 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for all but my line has an outdoor crew space that can be taken advantage of. If they aren't to be in guest areas they can still utilize this space (if they see fit) or go out in port on their time off. But these jobs are in the depths of the ship, so they won't see it unless they seek it (though the messes have windows- gotta go there to eat!)
@ummijan36368 жыл бұрын
Thank you for answering me. I'm very grateful. Is there on board training options for staff at all levels?

Angie, I've seen several documentaries about cruise liners and read a tell-all book from a former worker. Most major cruise lines do NOT care about their employees. That's why a vast majority of the workers doing the backbreaking work are from the Caribbean or South America. They sidestep labor laws by registering the ships outside the US. Look on the backs of any of the Big Three. I guarantee you not one is registered in the US. And Disney is no different. Look on Wikipedia. Their ships are all registered in the Caribbean. Some employees have posted videos on YT showing their bunks. They look like prisons without the metal bars. And the pay is crap. They seem to make sure the employees come from poor countries and can barely speak the company's language so it's easier to manipulate them.

@mjobrien696 жыл бұрын
Flags of convenience whether Panama, Liberian, Marshall Islands, Caribbean Islands etc etc... STILL have to exceed the minimum required international labour laws of the "Maritime Labour Convention", which is under the "International Labour Organisation" which is under the "United Nations". As this ship frequently travels to the U.S. It still has to meet USCG requirements and USPH. So do your homework and stop making up nonsense. Flags of convenience are not there to bypass regulations and laws, they still have to exceed them. They are primarily for tax and business financial purposes. As these ships trade internationally, they have to exceed the minimum international requirements. They are certainly not dirty, they would be shut down immediately, even more so being a passenger ship.

damn the cruise liners make you pay for your drinks and food? My crew are tight knit, we all know each other it seems like its a mini city of workers on the Cruise Lines.
@Somm_RJ4 жыл бұрын
This is too late and you probably already know but just in case, no, crew don't pay for food. You only pay for food is you go to a speciality restaurant where guests eat, at a crew discount price. Food at crew mess (not just meals, also includes breads and others at breaktime) including beverages such as juices, water, coffee, and tea are free. At the bar, you have to pay though, again, at crew discount price. You also have to pay food if you go to crew shop, it is like a mini grocery store where you can buy stuff like junk foods, snacks, chips, etc. Crew can also go to a theatre to watch shows or movies every no and then. Also have sport areas like basketball courts or something similar. The number of crew depends on how big the ship is, the number goes from high hundreds to over 2000.

The bars are the same for everyone- you probably won't find the captain, staff captain or hotel director in the bar though...ever (top positions).

How do the crew members find time to enjoy themselves when they're always working? And their off duty hours are between 11pm and 6am? Surely they're too tired and just want to sleep. But the American host/lady does seem to mumble her words through the tour. Not a good speaker or talker. Maybe it's her broad American accent? But I was a restaurant manager and social host on the former cruise ship QE2. For three years. Very cramped crew cabins. And hardly no privacy. Working on these cruise ships is really for the young. Ideally in their 20s. Not for an older or mature person. But all I did when off duty was sleep in my crowded cabin. But my years on QE2 were between 1987 and 1990. Things may have changed for all crew members. Might be more humane. But the only good thing about working on a cruise line is you get to see the world. Well, most of it! Depends what ship and route you are signed to. Bon Voyage. Happy Sailing!

Hello, Michelle. I myself have a career in health care so naturally I was wondering what sort of facilities are there on board for crew members should any of you become ill or perhaps require something like dental care? Obviously if someone was severely sick or injured you'd have to be taken care of ashore but are there basic medical facilities aboard for the ship's crew?
@MichelleTimrox8 жыл бұрын
kingofalldoughboys we have (as do the guests, it's the same facility) the equivalent- i guess you could say - of a walk in clinic. there are doctors/nurses onboard, treatment rooms, a lab to run tests and the doctors act as pharmacists as well- I'm sure we don't have all the drugs, but probably the most commonly needed ones. anything I've ever needed prescribed (surprisingly to me) was always there and the crew are covered. Yes, just like walk in vs ER, anything severe is handled ashore- and we don't have dentists, so if there was an emergency there they would more than likely drug you and again, handle it ashore :)
@DEXA888 жыл бұрын
Basic facilities yes there is no dental care onboard. Besides the crew bar there is also a small gym the crew cafeteria the staff cafeteria and the officer's mess. In companies like Carnival there is separation where the crew member is considered the lowest form of life. The staff members eat in nicer mess and are catered by waiters. Those are the ppl who you would usually see walking in their pyjamas with the coffee mugs complaining that they got up at 9 or 10 in the morning while everyone else starts at 6 they also have guest area privileges and they can use the guest fitness and the swimming pool . Some of them can even eat in the guest restaurant. There is no internet onboard the one that is available is outdated and costs aprox 25$ for 200 minutes while there is newer technology available and they constantly promise to introduce better and cheaper internet it hasn't happened yet. You have 2 choices when you have nothing to do to get drunk and go sleep. Most of the crew works aprox 12 hours a day for a wage as low 300 USD. Cabins are shared by 2 members tho I've seen 3 man cabins on some ships belonging to royal carribean. Bigger ship = more guests and more work with the same amount of staff smaller ship = bathroom not available in your cabin (bigger ship 2 cabins linked with a bathroom) The house keeping usually cleans this bathroom 1 time a week and its poorly maintained and it always have a light smell.

Furthermore some companies have no food or drinks in the cabins.

What are the shifts like?? Do you get "weekends"??
@MichelleTimrox5 жыл бұрын
No weekends, you work every day - hours vary by the type of job you have but generally you'd work 6-12 hour days for a 4, 6 or 9 month contract (again, depending on your job)

hi! i've heard a lot about not being able to take pictures/videos in crew areas, yet so many people do it. what exactly are crew member not allowed to do, other than obvious things like saying who they are in shows and stuff?
@adambrady66756 жыл бұрын
At least there is no a shirtless hairy dude banging a drum yelling "ramming speed!" making you row the ship with an oar sticking out the side. The conditions really do not look too bad. It beats staffing a fighting hole and eating with dirt in your food.
