I'm with Ari and Michi on the girl math, especially on the shipping thing. Better to buy several things you need for the free shipping than just one thing you need with the added cost of shipping. You'll look back and be like, "Damn, I needed that other thing, too," and then have to pay shipping on that. Also, Amazon Prime might have free shipping, but it still costs like fifteen bucks a month. Unless you're constantly buying stuff on Amazon (or only getting Prime when they offer it for free), then it's more expensive in the long run.

It's more to give you a chance to declare credits and exemptions, or if you own a business. They already have all your payroll information and location and have calculated your taxes before you ever file.

Taxes collected by the state would be calculated by the state so that's not really an issue, also sales tax would be trivially easy to display. Credits and exceptions are still possible when the government does your taxes and businesses exist in other countries too, you just submit the documentation for that stuff at any point before the deadline each year. Other countries already figured how to account for all this stuff ages ago and the US could implement systems like this too, they just don't want to for some reason. The excuses are just copium.

Nah, bad justification. US tax system is obnoxious by design - state already has all the information it needs, so it can apply exemptions automatically as well. Or allow to get them back in cases you are "over taxed", like every normal country does.

The thing is with buying Miku figurines or anything really... it doesn't add up if you're using an American retailer... outside of your home country vs a local retailer with only SOME of what you want vs a proxy service. Also import fees depending on size. Some places have promo deals, some places don't. Some places charge more (like the price was combined with the shipping) while others are a bit more reasonable. You can't win them all.

Shipping is usually like 10 to 12 for me if its not free on items like that I'd rather spend an extra 5 bucks on a secondary item i want to get that shipping option. Girl math as a whole is a massive joke imo but that wasn't even girl math. An example of this would be like lets say plushies somewhere has a 30 dollar plush and the shipping to US with international shipping is nearly 20 bucks, however that 20 to a flat 50 instead of like 47.50 could get another plush and free shipping. Thats just how companies and people have done more and more for shipping as consumerism has gotten larger and more commodified with the internet. The production costs are low enough that they can eat the cost of shipping and have a higher profit margin for themselves.
