OTSEGO COUNTY, Michigan - A police chase across two Michigan counties ended with the arrest of a 27-year-old man from Alma Sunday night.
According to authorities, the suspect attempted to carjack a vehicle at a gas station in southern Otsego County, when the driver - who had a concealed pistol license - presented his gun and the suspect fled. Police said the suspect found an unlocked pickup truck in the parking lot with the keys inside and fled.
After the owner of the truck called 911, a description of the vehicle was sent out to police and a Michigan State Police trooper from the Gaylord Post found the vehicle driving northbound on I-75. Police said a pursuit started after the vehicle did not stop when the trooper turned their lights and siren on.
Police said stop sticks were deployed in an inactive construction zone near Hebron Town Hall Road, where deputies from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office joined in on the pursuit.
The pursuit stopped after the trooper performed a PIT maneuver, which disabled the vehicle just south of Mackinac City.
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Otsego County Jail.
Donald Wade was arraigned Tuesday on one count of attempted carjacking and one count of unlawful driving away of motor vehicle.
He will also be additional charges of fleeing and eluding in Cheboygan County.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the area, he was approaching the Mackinac Bridge which carries I-75 to the UP. The entry ramps from Mackinac City are very short and there is very little ramp to get up to highway speed. On the bridge, I-75 is two lanes in each direction, no shoulders. On the bridge, one of the lanes becomes metal grating for traction and to let air through. There is a toll plaza on the north side of the bridge. The situation was becoming extremely dangerous to the drivers around him. The references to "closing the bridge" refer to the Mackinac bridge. Michigan State Police are very professional and they, along with the county deputies did a fantastic job.

When I was living in Lansing we used to go to the UP up to Big Bear lake. Been over that bridge a few times. Used to see Ted Nugent out on the lake either in a rowboat with an amp and guitar singing away or on his huge pontoon boat.

@@BarryMcCaulkiner247 I know and agree, here it even applies to tow trucks. My comment was related to a great majority of police pursuit videos that there are many people who don't pull over...even when they have plenty of opportunity to do so. (I get it in other situations where some unsuspecting person suddenly becomes involved in close proximity to a chase.) I've even seen a pursuit video where the officer even commented on the oblivious driver who was unintentionally and to a good purpose...slowing the pursuit down. The officer even had a rude comment when the guy finally did move out of the way. Yes, many even in this situation suffer from DWHUA: Driving While Head Up @$$

Do a Google search for handcuffed suspects who have slipped their cuffs or pulled them over their feet so that they are in front and have stolen a squad car or taken a gun from the driver’s side and shot the returning officer. Releasing the seat belt in a standard auto front seat is a piece of cake when handcuffed. Hands and fingers still work when you’re handcuffed. Have someone tape or tie your wrists together and belt you in your car and see how long it takes you to figure out how to get a finger on the seat belt release button. 🤪

i've lived in Michigan for decades and people do it all the time. where it was stolen from was a small town where everyone knows everyone. I suspect the reason that the man with the gun that scared the thief off told the cops what vehicle the thief took was that he knew the owner of that truck. I see it all the time in the small town i live in. It's normal around here. If someone stole anyone’s truck where I live, unless he did at night, the cops would know in seconds. This is especially true if it happened at one of the two gas stations here. There are rarely times that, during the day, that there’s only one vehicle there

Back in the day you could outrun them. The funniest was Findlay Ohio when in the late 70's they had Chrysler K Cars and they could barely hit 90 and it took them a while to hit that. Put a lightbar on them and they couldn't catch a VW Bug lol. They didn't bother to chase someone like me in my 69 GTO Judge. Back in my wild days we had a lot of fun with the police, and we didn't go to jail either. Actually had a friend buy a car from me and the next day he gets stopped. The officer asked //'why did you pull over, you never did before?". My friend laughed and said he just bought the car the night before lol. I did stop one time, wasn't being chased but i went over a railroad tracks in Lima and a tie rod broke, then a ball joint broke too. I was stuck on the tracks and they had to shut the tracks down until i could get towed home. The good old days! Funny thing was I was friends with a lot of the police in the Lima area.

@evalor5640

Lengthy explanation from "Ask a Trooper": The Plexiglas “Stop” placards on Michigan State Police patrol car hoods were originally an imitation of similar, smaller signs on the front fender of police motorcycles used for highway patrol in the 1920s and ‘30s. Back then, the motorcycle troopers often did “side stops,” basically pulling up along side a motorist to signal them to stop. The driver could look out their window and spot the “Stop” sign, even if the trooper was back a bit and hard to see. The MSP quit using motorcycles in 1942 during World War II, but they started putting the larger “Stop” placards on patrol car hoods around 1949. These placards had multiple uses: for side stops, just like in the old motorcycle days; for blockades, when troopers would block intersections with their cars to check for bank robbers (the hood signs made it unnecessary to keep red lights activated during daylight); and for nighttime response to investigations at homes. Patrol car door shields did not reflect until 1954 (that’s when state police patrol cars changed from black to the current bright “MSP” blue with lightning bolt door shields), so by lighting up the hood “Stop-State Police” signs when they pulled into a driveway at a house, the troopers felt the residents could look out and see that it was a police car and thus feel safer. Today, the placards are obsolete, but kept for tradition. The state police no longer trains troopers to do side stops in heavy traffic; we quit doing blockades around 1981; and, in today’s police tactics, troopers no longer really want to illuminate their presence. The door shields now reflect, too.

Having a license seems to be a thing very very few people consider important and our DA's and judicial system doesn't penalize anyone enough to enforce the laws or the illegally driving people.
