@allisonjames29234 күн бұрын
All of them are truly beautiful especially because you put your love & skill into making them into gorgeous pendants for your lucky Nancy. I’d love to offer some advice about the wire wrapping since it obviously stresses you out a bit (even though you do a great job). Have you thought of alternatives at all? Using bezel wire & silver solder instead for example? Or even creating simple but unique bezels out of polymer clay (it turns into acrylic when cured - sturdy, flexible & a huge array of colours or colour options! I recommend Premo as a good all rounder but there are many brands you can try m? That can be baked in your own oven to cure it as long as your stone can handle being baked at 275°F for 30 min to an hour (Although it would extremely rarely be an issue, I would suggest starting with a cold oven & letting it cool in the oven as well to avoid any remote 0.00000001% chance of heat expansion shock to any hidden pockets of something that might be affected by heat within a stone. But since most stones are formed or altered at far far far higher temps, I’m sure they’d laugh at my concern if they could!). Also, if you twist your wire when you’ve created the loop around the stone, that should create enough tension to hold it firmly (especially since you create a channel for it), then you don’t have to loop back around the wire all the way down to the stone (which is when I’m guessing the chip occurred?). You can twist all the way to create your loop if you like. That way you can leave a little gap near the stone that won’t affect the aesthetic or the tension & that will hopefully make wrapping a bit easier for you. Or you can use a finer gauge wire to decoratively wrap the twisted part, start close to the stone & end up near the loop - again making life a bit easier as you won’t be trying to keep tension & wrap near the stone, so the chances of chipping it become far fewer. Just some suggestions anyway 😊 I hope you find them useful (& Nancy enjoys the customised results!). I’m working the other way around - I have bought stones in the past, so the wire wrapping & polymer clay bezels are what I have been doing, but I’m planning to join my local Gem & Lapidary club in Australia this year, so I can learn to cut & facet my own stones. I’m also branching out into precious metal clay as I find clay modelling easier than using a jeweller’s saw & files to create the pieces my brain comes up with. All but Fine Silver require 2 stage firing in a kiln, so I’ll really be testing how heat affects gems & rocks (gulp!). I suspect it will take me a while until I’m brave enough to fire them as I can just see some hidden pocket of gas or liquid within the rock expanding & exploding 💥 🫣😩 Again, I’m sure that’s a 0.000000001% chance, but knowing my luck 🤷♀️ Thanks for sharing & hope you, Nancy & your family have a wonderful & safe New Year! 😁 🎆
@MichiganRocks3 күн бұрын
Thanks for all the advice, Allison. You're right about wire wrapping stressing me out a bit. Those banded chert and Petoskey stone cabs had been setting in my shop for well over a month as I put off doing the wraps. I think if I just practiced more I'd get the hang of it. My daughter used to make lots of stuff from polymer clay. I think Sculpey was her brand of choice. She made really cute little earrings, mostly, but also some larger figurines. I wish I could post pictures here. She was really good. I don't know if I'd like that look for my pendants though. Seems like it should be metal of some sort. I have considered getting into silversmithing, but that looks like it takes a lot of time, which I'm pretty short of. Making videos takes a long time. Could you possibly link to a video or picture of the twisting thing you described? I have seen some wire wraps that look like someone twisted the top like you'd do with a twist tie on a bread bag. I don't like that look at all. But if that could be covered up with something neater looking, I'd be interested. Thanks again for all the typing! I appreciate it.

Rob, I've mentioned this before, but I have been following your KZbin channel for a while, and you inspired me to go ahead and spend a bit of money buying lapidary items, including a cabbing machine, a slant cabber, and through your Amazon pages, I purchased a glass grinder and some grinding heads. I was trying to help a youngster, aged 60 to fashion some jewelry, at no cost to him, since he needed some extra money. On a Saturday evening, I was in my church, polishing the pulpit, then the communion table and I momentarily forgot that these were on a built-up platform, so I took a step back, and the next thing that I knew, I was lying supine on the floor with my right femur broken in four places near the head of the femur. I spent the next month, firstly having had the surgery, then the remainder of that month in a rehab hospital. Yay, a steel rod from my knee, almost, to up near the top of the femur, and a fixating rod/screw though that into the head of the femur! I'm going to find it hard to bust that femur again in four places! Now, I just knew that R. was doing fine, using my basement workshop to make some fine jewelry. When I got home, at first I didn't notice anything wrong, but soon enough, I found thousands of dollars' worth of items gone. This R. guy wasn't coming to my basement to work, either. Since the beginning, I started to intimate to him via the phone what an utterly horrible time he would have in prison until almost everything was brought back. Over the past 3 months, I have been trying to get down to my basement to do some lapidary work, but it's still pretty hard to navigate the stairs, but I still spend some time doing that sort of thing. During the month that I was in the rehab hospital, R. had ruined 4 rock saw blades, every wheel on the slant cabber, and had left on the water pump to the cabbing machine, which had burned out the pump. I resurrected everything, and I finally got some beautiful howlite cabochons! I put them on the glass grinder and did a pretty good job of grooving them, followed by doing wire wraps, and they came out looking extremely great, especially for a first set of cabochons! I have heard you say that this sort of wire wrapping was not your favorite way of finishing cabochons, which sort of puzzles me! So, if this doesn't irk you too much, why is that? Because of the final last bit of tucking the wire away? Because I really do believe that wrapping the silver wire around the stone with the holding of the wire in the groove is about the simplest but most elegant way to wire wrap a stone, at least for cabochons. Sometimes I think that the minimalist way really sets off some jewelry, especially setting cabochons apart, and really truly when I don't see a groove wrap, but I do see a lot of different types of wire wrapped this way and that, obscuring the true beauty of the stone!
@MichiganRocks9 күн бұрын
Wow, that's a bummer about R. messing up your stuff. Sam was over today using my shop while I was in the next room editing videos. I completely trust him to take care of my equipment. He cleaned up after himself really nicely too. It's not that I don't like the look of the groove wraps, I'm just not very good at doing them. I much prefer the rock work than the jewelry work.

Sam's a very conscientious fellow, whereas R. turned out to be of the scoundrel type ... C' est la vie! With all of the tumblers that you built into your cabinet, I can only imagine that you have plenty of rocks to work on, if you are utilizing all of those tumblers!
@davidhile53637 күн бұрын
In Nov. 2017 I took a nasty fall and tore all the tendons off of my knee cap. It’s a weird feeling when your brain is telling your leg to move and it’s not responding. Anyway in therapy they taught me when doing stairs to always start going up with your good leg and when going down always start down with your bad leg. I hope that helps.
@Missouri-rockhound7 күн бұрын
David, I did the same thing with my left leg during the summer of 2018, tearing the quadriceps muscle from the tendon, and I was in a metal brace for 6 months before a surgeon took my case. I was watering a small patch where I had reseeded, and I found out that it was bentonite clay, which turns into something similar to ice when it's wet! When I met with the surgeon, I was joking around, and I asked him if he was descended for the Scottish royal line of Robert the Bruces, since his name was Robert Bruce. He wasn't much of the joking type, but he informed me that he is a lineal descendant from that line! So ... If you don't mind telling me, do you still have a bit of a limp? Oh, and my PT guy told me, and he was the best PTer in the state, according to everyone around here, that I should not become dependent on the cane for too long, so I took his advice, as well as to which leg to advance first, both ascending and descending stairs. He obviously made a lot of money, and he, in his mid-forties, retired to his ranch up in Montana, raising horses and cattle, and doing a lot of hunting. Yes, I had a small limp after all was said and done, but now with the right femur being broken into 4 pieces near the top, in the wing portion, I have a small limp on the right side, too, but again, I have shed the cane. The thing is, whenever I turn to my right side in bed, I feel as if I have an over-stuffed wallet in the right pocket of my pants, although I don't wear trousers in bed. The good thing is that there is no pain, but sometimes I do feel a bit of discomfort. Also, I didn't have a railing on my front or back porch the first time that I injured my left leg, and I still don't after busting my right leg. At least that's a straight shot but getting up and down from my basement is not only without a rail, but those steps also twist, and this house being built in 1895, for some reason the steps are abnormally largely spaced, about 4 inches extra between each step, rather than normally spaced. That's quite a drop or a raise for me, especially right now, so although I have done some rocks in the meantime, it's not as it was before the accident, when I was up and down the stairs to the basement several times per day, as of right now. A little bit longer, and it'll be like it was before (hopefully)! Thanks for the restatement of the info, though, it's always nice to hear from someone that cares enough to send such advice!

That's exactly what my wife said, and I agree with both of you. I had the slabs though and couldn't help trying it. I also made one slab into a turtle shell for the little turtles I make, and I have one more slab marked out for another pendant. That stuff is so hard that I can make a cab through about the third wheel then throw it in the tumbler. That saves the last few wheels for the front and also polishes the whole back beautifully. The backs are a pain because they take about as long as the front to do really well.

Nancy liked that one best too and she didn't mind the chip too much. She kept both of them.

I wonder, if you were to fill that chip with some super glue it might come close to disappearing. Liquid to begin with, then some super glue gel to give it a little thickness. Might be worth trying if you were inclined to save that beauty. They did turn out absolutely gorgeous though. Nancy can wear them with pride.

She did keep that one, and your idea is a good. I might give that a try to at least make it a little better. Thanks.

I beg to differ, Sir. You may not like wire wrapping, but you are great at it. Those pieces are beautifully done. Can you deconstruct the one that chipped and make an oval or circle out of it? It's too pretty a stone to let it go. Or maybe fill the chip in with a drop of acrylic?

They turn out ok in the end, but I stuggle to do it. You didn't see the one I cut off and started over on. My wife also liked the one with the chip the best and decided to keep it as is. She didn't think it was too bad being on the back where it doesn't show.

Very nice pendants! I think you said 1/4 inch is a bit thin for cutting the groove. If so, what would you say is the ideal thickness?
@MichiganRocks7 күн бұрын
One of those pendants I made was actually done on that thinner slab. I just like a little more room for the groove and a dome on the cab. On my saw, 5.5 turns of the crank give me a 1/4 inch slab. But turning the crank 5.5 turns leaves it at the top and it tends to fall down during the cut. So I just turn it 6 turns. That gives me a cab just a tad over 1/4 inch.

Merry Christmas! Great job on the Stones. I have a question about rock tumbling. Since I'm from Australia, I can only get 600 silicone carbide grit, and I can't get 600 aluminium oxide grit. Does it work if I add an extra step, such as using 600 silicone carbide and 1500 pre-polish aluminium oxide before I move on to my final polish?
@MichiganRocks9 күн бұрын
Honestly, I have never used 500 or 600 silicon carbide. I'd suggest trying to go right from 600 silicon carbide to your aluminum oxide polish. I'd only resort to an extra step if that doesn't work.

Hello. I like your cab making. have a question. what kind of overhead light do you have in the workshop that doesn`t flicker when you`re filming?
@MichiganRocks8 күн бұрын
Funny you should ask that. I have the cheapest LED shop lights I could find at Home Depot. I have four in the shop. The one that is directly over the Michigan Rocks sign on the wall had a section on one end start flickering badly while filming part of this video. I moved it to the other side of the room, off to the side from where the camera was and turned it off because of the blinking. Other than that, they've been good lights. Pretty sure they're this one: www.homedepot.com/p/Commercial-Electric-4-ft-Plug-in-Linkable-LED-Shop-Light-Garage-Light-On-Off-Pull-Chain-Switch-3200-Lumens-4000K-Bright-White-54103161/205331022
